To a magjjc oncem:
Beat known that-we, NORBERT SCHREIBER and BAi-HAEL Rosnn'rHAL, citizens of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the ounty ofLogan and State of Illinois, have invent eda certain new and useful ImprovementinBoiler-Skimmers, of which the following isa full, clear, concise, and exact description,preference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thisspecification.
YOur invention relates to boiler Skimmers, and especially to a type of boiler skimmer particularly adapted for use in locomotive boilers ,and in connection with the throttle valve mechanism thereof. In an application' filed by us Serial No. 867,055, filed October 17 1914, we have illustrated one form of boiler skimmer arrangement of this general character.
The principal object of the. present invention is to simplify and improve the skimmer construction and its connection and arra ngement in the locomotive boiler.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a plan view of a skimmer embodying our present. invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the skimmer and a portion of-a locomotive boiler in which the-same is mounted;
Fig. 3 is a view showing in longitudinal section a portion of such a locomotive boiler and the skimmer mounted therein.
In the drawings, and especially in Fig. 1 weshow a skimmer comprising a pair of side members 1 and 2 extending longitudinally of one another, preferably substantially parallel to each other. The side members 1 and 2 may be made of ordinary metal pipe and are preferably closed at their ends as by caps 3.3. and H. These side members or pipes l and 2 are provided with longitudinally extending slots or openings 5, 6, and 7 S, the slots 5 and 6 being on opposite sides of the member 1, and the slots 7 and 8 being on opposite sides of the member-2, as shown in 'Fig.. 2. Floats 9,10, 11 and 12 are attached. to .themembers 1 and 2, the floats 9 and: 10 to the member 1, and the floats 11 and, 12 to the member 2, saidfloats being preferably secured to said members by means of laterally projecting pipe sections 13-13, andl l-ll, fitted" toYTs 15-15 and '1616 on said members. Said floats 9, 10, 11 and 12 are preferably located between the ends Specification of Letters Patent.

of said members 1 and 2, a hlghly desirable arrangement being that shown in the drawings, especially Fig. 1, wherein the floats are located respectively about a quarter of the distance from the ends of said members, whereby equal distribution of weight is secured. The floats 9, 10, 11 and 12 are preferably elongated as shown for economy of space. A cross member 20 is extended between the members 1 and 2, preferably about midway between the ends thereof. The cross member 20 may also be constructed of pipe sections, as for example vertical pipe sections 20 and 20 and a horizontal top member 20". An outlet pipe 21 is pi 'otally connected with the cross member 2 as for example by a pivotal joint member-or coupling 22 and the other end of this outlet pipe 21 is connected by another pivotal joint 23 with a yoke or fork member 24 forming the end of and passing from the members 1 and 2,
to and through the cross member 20 to the outlet pipe 21, and thence to the discharge Up and down motion of the skimming device to maintain it always upon the surface of the water, notwithstanding changes in the level of the water, is permitted by the double pivot joint arrangement at the ends of the outlet pipe 21.
The construction described is particularly advantageous for use in. a locomotive boiler and is shown somounted in Figs. 2 and 3. lVhen thus arranged the cross member 20 is arranged over the dry pipe 26 of the locomotive and the discharge pipe 25 to which the outlet pipe 21 is connected is extended a convenient discharge point, the .pipe d9 being provided with a valve 30 which is to be manually controlled and opened from time to time as desired. The valve 27 being normally open, a continuous discharge takes place through the pipe '25", valve 27 and pipe :to some convenient point for discharge. The pipe 29 with its valve 30 acts as a bypass arrangement to allow a pronounced discharge at any time.
The discharge pipe 25 is provided with a valve 31-which is plvotally connected by rod 32 with link 33 which is in turn pivotally' modifications within the scope of the appended'claims may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What we claim is:
1; A boiler skimmer comprising side members provided with intake openings and a cross member connecting said side members between the ends thereof, floats for supporting said side and cross members, an outlet pipe pivotally connected with said cross member, and admin pipeto which said outlet pipe is pivotally connected.
'2.'A boiler skimmer comprising longitudinally. extending side members provided with intake openings and an elevated cross member extending between and connected to said side members, floats for supporting said side and "cross members, and an outlet pipe piv'otally connected with said elevated cross member. 3. A boiler skimmer comprising longit-udinally extending side members provided with intake openings, a cross member ex tending between and connected with said side members, and elevated between its ends, floats for supporting said side and cross members, an outlet pipe pivotally connected with the elevated portion of said cross member, and a drain pipe to which said outlet pipe is pivotally connected."
4. The combination with a locomotive boiler of a skimmer located therein, said skimmer. having longitudinally extending side members and a cross member having an elevated portion connected with' said side members between the ends thereof, said cross member being extended over the dry pipe of said-locomotive b'oiler,.fioats for supporting said side and cross members, a dis-v charge pipe pivotally connected to said cross member, a valve'in Said discharge pipe, a throttle valve and leverand a mechanical connection for actuating said discharge pipe pivotally connected to said cross member, a valve in said discharge pipe, a throttle valve and lever and a mechanical connection for actuating said discharge valve when said throttle valve and lever are operated, and an outlet pipe interposed between said skimmer cross member and said discharge pipe, said outlet pipe being pivotally connected at one end to said cross member-of the skimmer and at the other end to said discharge pipe.
6. A boiler skimmer comprising longitudinally extending side members provided with intake openings, a cross member ex-- tending between and connected with said side members intermediate the ends of said members, a float provided at each end of the side members, an outlet pipe, and a tubular link connected to the cross member and the outlet pipe. Y
7. A boiler skimmer comprising longitudinally extending side members provided with intake openings and an elevated cross member extending between and connected to said side members, floats attached to the side members and an outlet pipe connected with said elevated cross member, said cross member and said longitudinally extending side members being movable with relation to the outlet pipe.
8. A boiler skimmer comprising longitudinally extending tubular side members provided with intake openings, a cross member connected with said side members substantially midway between the ends thereof, and
' floats connected with said side members at points between the ends thereof and the I points of connection of said cross member.
"9. A boiler skimmer comprising longitudinally extending tubular side members provided with' intake openings, a cross member connected with said side members substantially midway between the ends thereof,
'fioats connected with said side members at points between the ends. thereof and the points of connection of said cross member, and an outlet connection connected with saidcross member and adapted to permit the skimmer to move upwardly and downwardly to accommodate different water levels. 10. A boiler skimmer comprising longitudinally extending side members provided with intake openings and having their ends a closed, a tubular cross member connected with said side members at points substanmemestially midway between the ends of the latter, It witness whereof, we hereunto subscribe said cross member communicating with and our names this 4th day of June, A. 1)., 1915. w forming an outlet for said side members,
