Description
Sept. 6, 1932. P. 'R. ALPHONSO BOILER SKIMMER Filed Feb. 7, 1931 Patented Sept. 6, 1932.
UNH 'EED STATES PATENT oFFicE;
PETER R. ALPHONSO, OF WEWOKA, OKLAHOKA, ASSIGNOR TO THE ,ARGENT CORPORA- TION, OF SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA, A.CORPORA TIQN LOUISIANA BOILER sxnumia Application filed February 7,1931. Serial No. 514,298.
The invention relates to boiler skimmers, and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising a float supported pipe having branch pipes within the boiler, and provided with slots or apertures through which the scum on the water is forced by steam pressure within the boiler through a discharge pipe.
A further oo ect is to provide a flexible connection between the discharge pipe and the float supported pipe, whereby said float supported pipe and its branch pipes, will rise and fall with the water level within the boiler where it will be in operative position at all times.
A further obJect is to provide the ends of the float supported pipe with transverse members, to the ends of which the floats are connected at opposite sides of the pipe for maintaining the pipe and the branch pipes in horizontal position. at all times.
A further object is to provide the discharge pe with a valve remotely controlled, whereby the operator may allow the steam within the boiler to force the scum through the float supported pipes, the flexible pipe and through the discharge pipe, which may lead to any suitable source of discharge.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement or parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes inv the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective View of a conventional form of boiler, showing the skimmer applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional View through portions of the skimmer.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the skimmer, the flexible discharge pipe and the control valve.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a conventional form of boiler, and disposed within the boiler is an elongated boiler skimmer 2. The boiler skimmer 2 is formed from a plurality of pipe sections 3 connected together by pipe crosses 4, and by a T 5, to which is connected the upwardly extending flexible pipe 6. Threaded'on the end pipe sections 3 are T fittings 7, in the tranverse portions of which are threaded the studs 8 of the floats 9. that the floats 9 are disposed on opposite sides ofthe central conduit, therefore the transverse branch pipes 10, which are threaded into the crosses 4 will be maintained in a horizontal position at all times, as the water level 11 within the boiler rises and falls, therefore it will-be seen a particular water level will not have to be maintained within the: boiler. The flexible discharge pipe 6 has sufficient slack therein to allow a wide range of upward and downward movement ed avalve 14, and connected to the valve ca s-- ing 3 is a discharge pipe 15, which may lead to any'suitable source ofdischarge, which would naturally vary with different installations. Valve 14 is provided with a valve stem 16, angularly shaped, to which is connected an operating rod 17, and by means of which an operator may open or close the valve as desired.
When it is desired to clean the boiler-of scum whichgathers on the water, the operator, through manipulating the rod 17, rotates the valve 14 to openposition as shown in figure 3; then the steam pressure within the boiler will rush through the slots 18 in the branch. pipes 10, and will suck and force scum adjacent the openings through the branch pipes, the various fittings forming the skimmer and through the flexible pipe 6, valve 14 and discharge pipe 15. It will be obvious, as the water within the boiler is constantly circulating in the usual manner, the skimmer will move transversely and longitudinally within the boiler, thereby assuming different positions, and insuring the skimming of the entire surface of the water.
It will be noted This movement is permitted by the slack in the flexible pipe 6.
From the above it will be seen that a boiler skimmer is provided for removing the scum from the surface of the water, so it will not be taken up in the steam and carried tovarious pieces of machinery and interfering with the operation of the machinery It will also be seen that the device is simple in construction and operation, and can be easily and quickly applied to conventional boilers without varying the construction thereof, which is a desirable feature,
which allows the device to be easily applied to boilers now in use.
The invention having been set forth What is'claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with a boiler, a skimmer disposed within said boiler, said skimmer being, float supported, a slack flexible discharge pipe connected to the boiler above the skimmer, said skimmer being formed froma plurality of apertured pipes, said flexible pipe connection between the ski-mmer and the boiler forming means whereby said skimmer may move laterally in all directions. 7
2. The combination with a boiler, of: a skimmer disposed in said boiler, sa-id skimmer'c'omprising a plurality of connected apertured pipes, floats carried by said skimmer and forming means for maintaining said skimmer in a horizontal position, a discharge pipe carried by the boiler above the skimmer, and an upwardly extending slack flexib'le pipe connecting the skimmer and discharge pipe and through which scum'on the surface of water within the boiler is forced, said flexible pipe having sufficient slack therein to allow lateral movement of the skimmer in all directions.
In testimony whereof he hereunto aflixes his slgnature.
PETER A LPHONSO.
