DANIEL F. HOLMAN, OF FARMERSVILLE, OHIO.
APPLIANCE FOR THE PROTECTION AND PRESERVATION OF DRAINS AND SMALL SEWERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 6, 1920.
Application filed May 28, 1919. Serial No. 300,469.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL F. I-IOLMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmersville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Appliance for the Protection and Preservation of Drains and Small Sewers.
The object of my invention is to prevent the entrance into drains, or the passage through them of animals such as muskrats, skunks, rats, rabbits and dogs.
I attain this object by the mechanism illus trated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1, is a longitudinal section or view of a joint or section of drain tile, one half of which, 2, is molded to match and meet the ordinary drain or sewer tile; the other half is molded in a square or box shape, 3, to receive a protective valve or gate 4:, as hereinafter referred to. The square portion of Fig. 1, is one inch larger, inside, than the outside diameter of the circular portion, which enables the protective gate or valve, 4, Figs. 1 and 3, to be hinged or hung at the back end thereof and above the outlet of the drain, proper, 5, 5, 5, Figs. 1 and 3. Fig. 2 is a cross section of Fig. 1, showing the relation of the square or boxsection 3, to the outlet of the drain-tile, proper, 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section ofthe square portion of Fig. 1 as it appears viewed from in front of the outlet, showing the gate or valve 4, and the manner in which it is hinged or hung at the top and back end of said section, by means of a rod passing through the walls of the tile and lugs on the surface of the gate or valve, 8, 8, Figs. 1 and 3.
The gate or valve may be either cast 01' formed of sheet metal and is slightly less in width than the inside of the square section of the tile and in length somewhat longer, so that when the lower end rests on the floor of the tile, it will stand at any desired angle as shown in Fig. 1. The lower end of the gate is indented, 6, Fig. 3, so that the ordinary flow of water may pass out without raising or floating the gate. On the under side of the gate at some distance from the bottom, is molded or attached a transverse line of sharp points or spikes, 7, Fig. 1, which, when the gate is slightly raised, forms a second barrier to the entrance of animals into or passage of rats into cellars or buildings.
This device may be placed at the outlet of tile drains, at junctions or elsewhere in the drainage system as may be necessary or desirable.
I claim,
An automatic drain tile protector having an indented metal gate hung at an angle of forty-five degrees or any suitable angle in a square outlet section, and having near the lower under side, a transverse line of points or spikes, resting on the floor of the tile when the gate is not afloat, substantially as described.
DANIEL F. HOLMAN.
