SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,049, dated October 25, 1904.
Application filed March 12, 1904. Serial No. 197,800. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. BRoNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing atLabelle, in the county of Lewis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of whichthe Vfollowing is a specification. A
This invention relates to steam-boilers, par-Y ticularly -those employed with traction-engines, in which the steam used is intendedto bedry and is taken for the engine from the high end of the boiler, Whether going up or down hill. i
The invention consists in automatic means for controlling the passage of the steam from veither one of the steam-domes and in a bypass pipe to insure the escape of the steam Awhen the level of the water in the boiler is too high.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in whichv Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of a steam-boiler constructed in accord ance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same.
In said drawings, A represents the body of in the top of each Steam-dome is provided in-AY ternally with a conical valve-seat b, adapted to receive 'a corresponding conical valve e, which is mounted on the upper endof a valverod E, the lower end of which is attached to and carried by a hollow iioat F. The valverod E is guided and maintained in a vertical position by metal 'straps f, screwed to the inside of each steam dome, through which straps the Avalve-rod passes freely. When one end of the boiler is elevated while the traction-engine is ascending a hill, the oat F at that end descends with the level of the water and also its valve e, leaving the steamopening of the steamdome at that end fully open for the passage of dry steam; but at the same time the level of the water becomes higher in the opposite end of the boiler, and the float becomes higher and its valve c closes the opening in the top of the steam-dome at that end and prevents the passage of wet steam or water to the engine.
rlhe boiler is provided with a steam-gage g, of usual construction, mounted in a convenient location on one of the-steam-domes, and vsaid gage may be placed on each steam-dome. It is also provided with a safety-valve H and an alarm or steam whistle L. l
' To insure the safety of the boiler in case the level of the water is much above the normal level or in case the valves happen to stick in their seats and either the steam-gage or the safety-valve and whistle indicate dangeig one of the steam-domes is provided-on one side with a by-pass pipe K, which is adapted 'to lead steam fromsaid steam-dome into the pipe C. Said pipe K is provided with a valve L, which can be opened with a hand-wheel Z. Said valve is generally kept closed; but it may be kept slightly open, as its level can be higher than the steam-dome. Both steamdomes may have by-pass pipes, each one provided with a hand-valve.
Having now fully described my invention, I claiml. Thecombination of the body of a steamboiler,'a steam-dome near each end, and pipes connecting the top of each dome to the other,
Ya valve-seat in each dome, leading to said pipes, a valve and its rod vertically guided iny each dome and a ioat carrying each valve-rod and automatically operated by the `water and its changeable level within theV boiler, substantially as described.
. 2. The combination of the body of a steamboiler, a steam-dome on each one of its ends and exit-pipes connecting the top of each dome v to the other, a valve-seat in each dome having an opening leading to each pipe, a valve l and its rodvertically guided in each dome and a float carrying each valve-rocha by-pass pipe additionally leading from one of the steamdomes to the steam-exit pipes, and a handvalve on said by-pass pipe, substantially as described.
