To all whom t may c.; yearn;
Be it known that I, E rmioXn Rax-maga citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Logan and State olf' illinois, have invented certain new and useful mprovements'in Boiler-Cleaners, of which the following a specification.
This invention .relates to devices for blowing oil' or remo-:ingv scum, dirt, foam', etc., which rises to the snr-face of the water in str-:am boilers, and its object. is to provide a. `iove` and improved float-controlled skirr.- mer which is mounted that it remains perfectly lei-'el with the surface of the water in all positions of the boiler. l
lV ith the hereinstated object in view, the invention consists in a combination and rangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the. accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the device.; F ig. 2 is a. longitudinal section cfa fragment of Va steam boiler showing the device in operative position therein and Eig. 3 is section on the line of Fig.
Referring 'specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes an ordinary steam boiler in which the skimmer device is mounted, said device comprising a pipe 6 which is'float-supported,
close to' the surface of the water in the boiler, ,A float 7 is located at the `outer or free end of the pipe,and adjscent to the inner end of the pipe, on each side thereof, is a float- The floats and S are suitably connected to the pipe, On one of the Vend walls of the boiler 5 is connected'an outlet pipe or nipple 9 provided on the outside of the boiler with a blow-ofi` valve 10. The skimmer pipe 6 is. flexibly connected to the outlet 9 so that it may remain level. with the surface of the water in'all positions ofthe` boiler. Y the following parts: -To the outlet 9, inside the'. boiler 5, is connected a hollow coupling member 11 on whichis swiveled a second hollow coupling member lo. These two members are connected and held against endwise separation by screws 13 carried by the member l2 and seating at their inner ends in an annular groove 14 in the member l1. The member 12 is Jfree to turn on the member A11 about an axis coinciding with the lonfritudinal axis Tof the boiler. To the member 12 is pivoted, to `swing vertical-ly, one end of a hollow arm-15 having pivotally This flexible connection comprises connected to its other end aflhollovtcoupling;
member l16 which carries .theskimmerpipe 6. The pivotal connection between the mem-V ber l5 and the arm 15 allows the skimmer,
pipe. t to swing vertically -relative to the arm, and as said arm is also pivoted to the member 12 to swing' vertically, a flexible Joint for the skimmer pipe is provided which allows said pipe to remain in horizontal pogathers here. I The floatsalsohold the skimmer` pipe so that the inlets remain on top- The swivel joint, between the 'parts 1 1 and.
12 allows the skimmer pipe 6 to remain level when the boiler tilts' sidewise.` Locomotive 'boilers take this position when on if curve,
where the c iirve is higher on one side than at the. otheiz The swivell joint alsoI adapts the device for marine boilers, as' the skimmer pipe willstay level no inater how much the vessel pitches. The swivel joint makes the skimmer pipe self-adjusting`sidewise,
and vprevents said pipe from tilting so as' to bind the pivot joints between the parts 12, 15 and. 1.6.
Ordinarily, one skimmer pipe is sutlicient, the 'samebeingi mounted 'midwaygbetween the sides of the boiler-so as tota'ke the scum, etc.,'f rom bothv sides. On large boilers two or more skimmer pipes may be employed. I claim: Y 1. A boilerY cleaner comprising an'elorigated skimmer extending in the direction of the length of the boiler, floats on opposite sides of the skimmer, and a flexible coupling connecting the skimmer to the boiler wall and an outlet,said coupling comprising a member which is swiveled to turnon an axis coincidiig with the 'longitudinal axis ofthe boiler, a hollow arm pivoted to said member to swing vertically, and a pivotal connection betweenthearm and the skimmer to allow the latterl tpswing vertically relative to the arm.
2. A boiler cleaner. comprising an elonlos gated skimmer extending in the direction of the lengthA of the boiler, floats on opposite sides of the skimmer, and a flexible coupling connecting the skimmer to the boiler wall 'and an outlet, said coupling comprising a member connected to the outlet, a. member swiveled to said member to turn on an axis coinciding with the longitudinal axis ofthe boile'r, a hollow arm pivoted to the second- 10 mentioned member to swing vertically, a
l member pivotedto the arm to swing ver- In testimony whereof, I aix my signature 15 in presence of two witnesses. Y
