UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
XVILLIAM B. MOORE, OF ORMAND, PENNSYLVANIA.
STEAM-BOlLER CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,648, dated December 27, 1887.
Application filed Septe1nher24, 1887. Serial No. 250,596.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ormand, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boiler Oleaners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
My invention relates to a blowoff device for steam-boilers; and it consists of the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
It is Well known to engineers and boilerattendants that sediment and impurities accumulate and float on the surface of the water, and that impurities and sediment pass or escape only through the gage-cock that is on the water-line.
The object of my invention is to provide a blow-off device which is adapted for use on portable and stationary steam boilers and which is so constructed and arranged that the impurities and sediment which float on the surface of vthc water can be readily drawn from the boiler. This obj ect I accomplish by a single device, which is simple in construction and reliable and efficient in operation.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a vertical sectional View taken longitudinally through a steam-boiler; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line m as of Figpl, showing the blow-off device adjusted to a horizontal position for drawing off the sediment on the surface of the water. Fig. 3 is an enlarged View of the bushing D and handle H.
Referring to the drawings, in which likeletters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures, A designates an ordinary steam-boiler, which in the present instance corresponds to the boiler of a portable steamengine, which has the usual reboX, B, and the flues C. I would have it understood, however, that my invention can be used on stationary steamboilers as well as on portable (No model.)
steam-boilers. In either end of the boiler, or at any other suitable point at either side of the boiler on the waterline therein, I secure, in any suitable manner, a stuffing-box, D, of any preferred pattern, and this stufiing-box has the usual central opening or passage through which is passed a horizontal axiallyrotating tube or pipe, E. This axially-turning pipe E is of such a length that its inner end enters and communicates with the interior of the boiler above the crown sheet of thefirebox therein, and the outer end of the pipe eX- tends or projects beyond the boiler for a suitable distance. The eXtreme outer end of the axially-turning pipe is provided with an an gular nozzle, e, which normally assumes a vertical position when the pipe is at rest and out of use, the nozzle being of suitable length and serving to conduct the steam, water, gases, and other impurities from the boiler. The inner end of this pipe E is provided with lan angular or elbow arm or bend, F, which communicates with the horizontal portion of the pipel and is disposed at any suitable angle thereto, preferably a right angle, and the outer extremity of this angulararm or bend has a flaring mouth or nozzle, f, arranged at right angles to itself, this flaring mouth extending in substantially the same horizontal direction as the pipe E. The axially-turning pipe or tube E is provided with a valve, G, at a point between the nozzle at the outer end thereof and the point where it enters the bushing. This valve is of the ordinary pattern and is normally closed to cut oiil the escape of the steam, gases, tte., from the boiler.
The operation of my invention is obvious. The tube or pipe E normally assumes a position so that the inner angular or elbow arm or bend, F, thereof lies substantially in the plane of the horizontal axis of the pipe, or the elbowarm may extend above the water-line and into the steam-space of the boiler, and the valve G is closed to prevent the egress of the steam, &c. If it is desired to draw off the oating impurities or accumulated sediment on the surface of the water, the pipe or tube E is turned or rotated partially until the open flar ing mouth thereof assumes a position on the -plane of the water-line of the boiler, the water and the impurities suspended therein or float- ICO ing on the surface thereof flowing freely into and through the pipe E. The pipe is rotated slowly by the attendant as the water in the boiler falls, so that the Water will enter the same at all times until it falls on or below the level of the crown sheet of the fire-box. To prevent the Water in the axially-turning pipe or tube E from freezing, it is only necessary to turn the pipe until the arm F assumes a vertical position and the nozzle e ahorizontal or an inclined position, and then open the valve to permit the water to flow out of the pipe E and the nozzle e thereof.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that by the use of the axially-turning valved pipe or tube located at or near the water-line of the boiler I am enabled to provide a simple and inexpensive device, which serves efficiently to `draw off both the gaseous and liquid or semi-fluid impurities that may accumulate in the boiler.
It Will be understood that my invention is to be used for drawing off the sediment or impurities that may accumulate on the surface of the water.
Any suitable contrivance may be employed for turning or rotating the pipe or tube E, which device is tobe located outside of the boiler and within convenient reach of the attendant. I prefer to employ a handle, H, which is made of wood or other non-conductor of heat and is rigidly fixed or secured to a shank, g, that is formed with a ring or sleeve, h, which is tted over the nozzle c of the pipe or tube E, said sleeve or ring being clamped to the nozzle at any suitable point by means of a binding-screw, h, Which Works in a threaded aperturein the sleeve or ring and bears against the nozzle, as shown.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A blow-olf device for steam-boilers, consisting of an axially-turning imperforate tube or pipe, E, passing through the boiler-shell at or near the water-line thereof, an angular arm, F, fixed to the inner end of the tube or pipe and having at its free end alight-angled mouth, f, and a valve, G, iitted transversely in the tube or pipe at a point outside of the boilershell, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of a bushing, D, xed
in the boiler-shell at or near the water-line, an-
imperforate tube or pipe, E, fitted in the bushing and capable of turning freely on its axis therein, an angular arm or tube, F, fixed to the inner extremity of the pipe or tube and having a right-angled flaring mouth, f, extending therefrom in the same direction as the tube or pipe E, and a valve, G, fitted transversely in the tubeor pipe E at a point beyond the bushing, as and for the purpose described.
' 3. A blow-off device for steam-boilers, consisting of an imperforate axially-turning tube or pipe, E, having a depending nozzle, e, at its outer end, a bushing through which the pipe passes, an angular arm or tube, F, fixed to the inner end of the tube or pipe and having a right-angled flaring mouth, a valve, G, fitted transversely in the tube or pipe at a point beyond the bushing, and a handle, H, provided with a sleeve which is fitted over the nozzle c, and with a set-screw. for clamping the handle and sleeve to the nozzle, as and for the pur# pose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
