IMPROVEMENT IN THRESHOLDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,210, dated December 26, 1871.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Thresholds, invented by ELIAS BAKER, of Meriden, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire.
The first part of my invention relates to the device of the adjustable threshold,'which may be elevated or depressed to any desired position, the object of this part of my invention being to secure a joint between threshold and door which, with trifling attention, can be kept perfect for years, efl'eetua-lly excluding all snow, wind, rain, dust, and vermin, and which, while it successfully attains these objects, shall never interfere with the free motion of the door. The second part of my invention relates to the appliance of the rubber packing in connection with thresholds for outside doors, said packing being intended to keep the several parts of the thresholds water-tight, thus insuring their permanent'utility.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
'Figure 1 is a face representation of a threshold embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section, showing the nature and office of the screw 0.
General Description.
vated and depressed by itself, as is also any of its parts. It is operated by a screw-driver on the screws 0 G G. This adjustable center section is of the same thickness with the door, and
is placed immediately under it within the rabbeting. It should be made of hard wood to resist wear, and may be covered with a plate of sheet-iron or brass for the same purpose. When the threshold is put down, before the door is hung, the center section should be elevated a quarter or three-eighths of an inch, so that it may bedepressed to the requisite degree when the door sags, as it invariably will with a few months wear. E is the rubber packing interposed between the adjustable center section and the outer side piece B. It is attached to the latter and is inserted to keep the joint water-tight, thereby preserving the several pieces from decay and liability to swell, which would render the adjustable center section immovable. F is the checknut employed to hold fast the screw 0 in the center section D. Above this nut is the washer G. The screw on which this nut runs is the same with the common wood screw, excepting that the thread is cut somewhat closer to the head, and to preclude the possibility of the screws rusting it is coated with tin or made of some metal that will not rust.
Thresholds for inside doors have not the rubber packing, as has that for outside doors in the drawing, and the two side pieces are made substantially alike after the piece A. In all other respects the two thresholds-that for inside and that for outside doors-are similar.
Claims.
I claim as my invention 1. The device of the adjustable threshold, with 'an independent movable section capable of beforth.
ELIAS BAKER.
