To all whom it may concern: V Be it known that 1, JOHN E. CneLMAN, a citizen of the United States, res1d1ng at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Devices for Sewing-Machinea'of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon. My invention relates to folding devices for use in connection with sewing machines, the object of the invention being to provide a folding device for folding and guiding to the stitching mechanism of a sewing machine, a single piece center plait used especially on workingmens shirts.
As heretofore constructed, the folding device folds a piece of goods and turns in the raw edges, the body of the goods extending into the center plait far enough to be stitched by two of the needles, the upper turned edge of the center plait extending beyond the line of the lower turned edge.
It has been found desirable to reinforce this center plait by an interlining strip inserted beneath the fold of the fabric, and the particular object of the present invention is to provide a folding device which will form the center plait and simultaneously guide an interlining strip therein.
The invention, therefore, consists in the matters hereinafter described and referred to in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-

In these drawings, 1 represents as a whole the folder formed at its receiving end 2 to take in the strip to form the center plait, and gradually tapering toward its delivery end 3 to receive in the recess between its outer .lower plates 4 and ing through and inner walls the edge of the body fabric, and formed as shown to fold in the raw edges of the strip, the edge of the outer wall pro ecting beyond the edge of the inner wall, thus forming a curved recess 17, the upper portion of which 17 overlies the lower 17. The forwardly projecting upper and 5 attached to the inner wall extend beyond the end of the folder and maintain the folds in the upper and lower edges of the center the forwardly projecting side tongues 6 and 7 attached to the walls of the upper and lower recesses serve to guide the folded ma.- terial in a straight line after it leaves the folder, to prevent the plait itself from widening out between the folder and the needles. As herein shown, the sewing mechanism includes four needles 8 arranged in pairs, theextreme left hand needle passing through the upper layer of the center plait and the body fabric, the other left hand needle passboth folds of the center plait, the body fabric and the interlining strip 9, and the two right hand needles passing through both layers of the center plait and the interlining strip.
To guide the interlining strip 9 in proper relation to the layers of the plait, requires a special construction of folder.
As shown in the drawing, the interlining strip is fed from the lower edge of the folder into the guiding slot 10, formed by the plate 11 attached to the inside of the folder.
It passes underneath'and then over a wire 12, arranged at an inclination to the axis of plait strip, while folder beneath the inner wall of the folder W 13, and up through a slot 14 in the wall of the folder into the recess 17, which guides and folds the center plait strip, passing out of the delivery end of the folder in contact with the upper layer of the center plait strip, and being guided over the projecting plate 4 and beneath the wire tongue 16.
Having'thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A folding guide including outer and inner spaced guiding walls forming a recess therein through which a lining strip maybe carried into the recess and guided between 5 the upper and lower faces of the folded strip. 2. A folding guide including outer and in ner spaced guiding walls forming a recess between them for. guiding and folding a strip, the inner wall having an opening therein through which a lining strip may be carried into the recess, and having at its delivery end a guiding tongue beneath which the lining strip is-guided on its way to the needles.
3. A- folding guide including outer and inner spacedguiding walls forming a recess between them for guiding and folding a strip, the inner wall having an opening therein through which a lining strip may be carried into said recess, an inverting guide attached to the outer face of the inner wall for guiding and inverting the lining strip.

6. Afolding guide including spaced guiding walls forming a recess between them for guiding and folding a strip, a second guiding device arranged at a right angle to the first named guiding recess, means to invert the strip passing through the secondguiding evice, a third guiding device arranged parallel with the second guiding device, whereby the strip passing through the second guiding device can be passed into the first guiding device.
