Application filed November 11,1919, Serial No. 337,121. Renewed March 2, 1923.
To all 10 ham it may concern: Be it known that I, Jnssn zen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plait Folders for Sewing Machines, a description, reference being hadto the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates to new a d useful improvements in folders for sewing Inachines, and more particularly to a folder for folding a facing strip to form'a plait for attachment to shirts or the like.
An object of the invention is to providea folder for directing and folding the edgesof a facing strip, and for simultaneously forming from the body portion of the facing strip a plait which is centrally superposed upon said facing strip.
In the drawingswhich show byway of J. HEAP, a citiillustration one embodiment of'the invention;
Figure 1 is a view showing more or less diagrammatically certain parts of a sewing machine having my improved folder applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is aview showing more or less 'dia-' grammatically the strip as it isbeing folded,
and also the body fabric to which the strip is attached and the position of the needles for forming the lines of stitching,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view through the folder and a portion of the work support of the sewing machine,
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the folder,
Fig. '5 is a sect-ionalview on the line'5'5 of Fig. 3, v
Fig. 6 is a sectional View on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3, and 1 Fig. 7 is a view showing more or less dia grammatically and in section, the body fabric, the plait attached thereto, and the position of the needles for forming the lines of stitching which secure the plait tothe body fabric. H
The invention is directed broadly to a folder which is provided with folding and guiding means'for directing and turning in the edges of the facing strip and for simultaneously forming a superposed plait from the body portion of said facing strip. To this end. the folder is provided with spaced guiding walls shaped to receive the facing of which the followingisstrip and inturn theedges thereof The 'upQ per wall is cutawayfrom a point midway between its ends to the delivery'end thereof so as to form spaced guiding. edges, the dis-- tance between which gradually increases. toward the delivery end of the folder. See cured to the lower member of the folder and extending through this recess is a rib which carries a plate which gradually increases in, width toward the delivery end of the" folder. The rib and plate co-operate with the guiding edges to fold the'body portion of thefacingvstrip and form a plaittherefrom,;the edges of the folded portions of which are disposed between and spaced from the edges of the folded portions of thefaclng strip. i W
Referring more in detail to the drawings, my improved folder is shown applied .to a sewing machine having a presser foot 1, a work support 2, and the feed dog 3 for feedmg the 1 materials underneath the presser foot. As herein shown,'the' machineispr'o vided with fourneedles, '5, 6, 7 and 8, and e0 operating with each oneis a looper. one of which is indicated at 9 in Fig. 1Q Locatedin front of the presser foot is my'improved folder which is indicated at 10. Said folder consists of a shank 11' having slots 12 formed therein through which screws may be inserted'. for 'cla mping the' folder to thework support 2' "of' the sewing machine. Attached to this shank is a lower guiding plate 13 and also an upper'guiding plate 14:. These guidingplates are so shaped as togradually inturn the respective edges ofafacing strip.
The facing strip is indicated at F in the drawings and the inturned edge portions of said facing strip are indicated respectively at f and f'. The garment to which-the facing' strip is secured is indicated at G, and the edge of the garment is preferably inturned" as indicated at a, The body portion of the facing strip as formed by my improved folder is formed with a superposed plait which is indicated at P. This plait is formed these inturned sections are indicat'edat p" and *0. The facing strip'with itssuperposed plait is stitched tothe garment by four linesjof stitching. The needle 5 enters :with abridge piece 24which the facing strip adjacent its outer edge and forms a line of stitching indicated at 15. The needle 6 passes through the superposed plait and the garment and forms a line of stitching indicated at 16. The needlev 7 passes through the other edge of the plait and through the garment and forms aline of stitching 17, while the needle 8 passes through the facing strip adjacent its inner edge and also through the garment and forms line of stitching 18.
The superposed plait is formed by cutting away the upper guiding plate so as to form spaced guiding edges 19 and 20 (see Figs, 5 and 6\. The recess between the guiding dges 19 and 20 gradually increases in widthtoward the delivery end of the folder. Mounted on the under guiding plate 13 and located in said recess is a rib 21. This rib projects upwardly to a point above the plane containing I the guiding edges 19 and 20 and mounted on said rib is a plate 22. This plate 22 is tapered and increases in width toward the delivery end of the folder (see Fig. 4). The plate at the delivery end of the folder 19 and 20 of the guiding member 14. The front end of the rib terminates at some distance in rear of the upper end of the recess between-the edges 19 and 20, and the plate 22 extends forwardly beyond the rib and is curved downwardly as at 20 between the guiding- edges 19 and 20 and soldered or otherwise secured to'the lower guiding member 13. The plate 22 therefore tapers substantially to a point at its front end and in a sense, vanishes into the guiding inem ber 13.
. The plait P: is formed by this rib and plate '22 and guiding edges 19 and 20. The body portion of the fabric will be at first raised by the plate-22'and then finally the inturnedportions 7) and p formed, so that as the facing strip passes-from the folder it will have its edge portions turned under and-the central portion of the strip formed into a'plait. The'edges ofthe folded portions of-theplait' will be well within and spaced from the edges of the folded portion vof the facing strip after-the edge portions areturned under. Said folder is provided with abridge piece 23 which extends over the recess between the edges 19 and 20 at the frontend thereof and is also provided extends over the plate 22 at'the delivery end of the folder These bridge pieces hold the spaced upper sections of the folder againstmove- Inent."- y i i I .iFrom theabove-it will be apparent that I have provideda folder wherein a fiat strip of fabric is directed and guided so as to fold underneath the edge portions thereof and also to simultaneously form from the body portion .of said overlaps the edges .andilocated in said recess, a
strip, a superposed plait,
approximately the same distance-from the adjacent folded edge portions which are stitched down by the respective lines of stitching.
It is obvious that minor changes in details of construction and arrangement'of parts may be made without departingfrom the spirit of the invention as set forth in the' appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters-Patent is 1. A folder for sewing machines including upper and lower guiding members shaped so as to receive, direct and turnun derneath the edge portions of a facing strip, the upper member being formed with a recess centrally thereof which increases in width toward th delivery end of the folder, a rib carried by the lower guiding member and located in said recess, a plate carried thereby, said plate and rib being shaped so as to form a plait from the'body portionof the facing strip. passing throughthe-folder.
2. 'A folder for sewing machines includ ing upper and lower guiding members shaped so as to receive, direct and turn underneath the edge portions of a facing strip, the upper member being formed with'a recess centrally thereof which increases in width toward the delivery end ofthe-rfolder, a rib carried by the lower guiding memberand located in said recess, a plate mounted on said rib, said plate having its receiving end vanishing into the lower guiding member and increasing in height toward the delivery end to a point well above the upper guiding member, and overlapping the edges of the upper guiding member alongside-oi said central recess, said plate increasing in width from its front end to the delivery end of the folder. i
3. A folder for sewing machines includ ing up er and lower guiding members shaped so'asto receive, direct and turn underneath the edge portions of a facingstrip, the upper member being formed with a re-- cess centrally thereof which increases in width toward the delivery end of the folder, a rib carried by the lower guiding member plate mounted. on said rib, said plate having its receiving end vanishing into' the lower guiding mem ber and increasing in height toward the. delivery end to a point well above the upper guiding member, and overlapping the edges of the upper guiding member alongside of said rib.
said central recess, said plate increasing in width from its front end to the delivery end of the folder, and a bridging member carried by the folder at the delivery end thereof and extending over the plate carried by 4:. A folder adapted for use in sewing Inachines having four needles, said folder ineluding upper and lower guiding members shaped so as to receive direct and turnunderneath the edge'portions of a facing strip, the upper member being formed with a recess centrally thereof which increases in Width toward the delivery endiof the folder,
and means associated therewith for forming strip passing through the folder, said folder is i a plait from thebody portion of the facing being so disposed relative to the four needles that lines of stitching adjacent the outer folded edges of the facing strip-and adjacent the outer folded edges ofthe superav v posed plaitwill be formed. a v
