Secured to or forming a part of accompanying drawings, and to the letters the base-plate in advance of the folding-re- 10 and figures of reference marked thereon. .cess C and in line therewith, the recess C and Ourinvention relates to animprovelnentin recess c being made to overlap, is a trough- 6o folding-guides for sewing-machines, the ob-- shaped recess D. ject being particularly to provide a folding- In operation in the use of this invention if guide for attachment to a single-needleyokea ruffled edging is to be applied to a garment- I5 ruftiing machine of the Union Special type as, for'example, t0 the bottoms of the legs of for putting the ruffle on the bottom of the ladies drawers-the plait 1 in the body of legs of ladies drawers or other garments. fabric is stitched on another machine. Then In the use of this invention the body porthe plait 1 and the raw edge 2 beneath the tion of the fabric is first plaited and stitched. same are laid in the trough D, the raw edge 20 Then the raw edgebelow the plait is folded, being first inserted inthe recess C and the the piece to be ruffled inserted between the plait guided against the vertical lip c and the plait and the folded edge, and the parts fed edge of the fabric to be rufded being placed to the sewing mechanism, which passes a row in the recess 0. Then as the feed goes on the of stitches through the edge of the plait, the raw edge 2 has a hem turned inwardly, the
25 edge of the ruffle, and the fold in the body plait 1 is guidedby the lip e, the fabric 3 by portion, thereby neatly and firmly securing the recess 0 and spring-tongue d, and are the parts together. united by a row of stitches 4, passing through The invention therefore consists in the matthe edge of the plait 1, the edge of the fabric ters hereinafter described, and referred to in 3, and the folded raw edge 2, the fabric 3 be- 30 the appended claims. ing ruffled just before the sewing operation The invention is illustrated in the accomtakes-place. panying drawings, in which By the use of the trough D the operator Figure 1 is a perspective view of so much can simply rest one finger therein lightly on of a sewing and ruftling machine as is necestop of the plait and have the other hand free 35 sarytoacomplete understandingof ourinvento guide the fabric to be ruffled, the use of tion. It has a raised portion B, to which we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patthe stripper-plate a is secured, and by the out, issame screws which hold the stripper-plate is 1. The herein-described folding-guide for also attached a plate I), bent to form a guidruffiing and sewing machines, comprising a folding and guiding recess, a guidinglip and a guiding-recess opposed to the first folding and guiding recess, whereby the raw edge of a plaited fabric may be folded and guided, the plait guided by the lip, and the edge of the fabric to be ruffled guided in the recess; substantially as described.
2. The herein-described folding-guide for sewing-machines, comprising a lower folding and guiding recess, a vertically-extending guiding-lip, and a guiding-recess above said folding and guiding recess and opposed there to, whereby the raw edge of a plaited fabric may be folded and guided, the plait guided by the lip and the edge of the other fabric guided in the recess; substantially as described.
3. The herein-described folding-guide for rufiling and sewing machines, comprising a folding and guiding recess, a guiding-lip and a guiding-recess opposed to the first folding and guiding recess, and a forwardly-projecting spring-tongue whereby the raw edge of a plaited fabric may be folded and guided, the plait guided by the lip, and the edge of 25 the fabric to be ruffled guided in the recess; substantially as described.
