To all whom fit may concern.- i y Be it known that I, HAssAN U. ALLEN, of North Bennington, in the-county of Bennington and State oi' Vermont, have invented a new and usefulflmprovement in Fruit-Jars; and- I do hereby declare that the following is a full, Clear,.

My invention has for its object to `furnish an improved square or rectangular fruit-can which shall be simple in construction, easily opened and closed, While at the same time being entirely airtight 5 and it consists in the construction'andcombiuation of various parts of the can, as herein-V after more fully described. 4
A is the body of the can, which is made square o r rectangular in its cross-section, the corners being slightly beveled off. The top or' the bodyb A is made dat with a slight bead, iiange, or rim, a', around its mouth, as shown in Fig. 2. i B is the cover, the lower side of which is made flat and witli` a circular groove, b', to iit upon the rim or bead a. C is a rubber ring, which is placed upon the top of the can A around al. b2 is a small bead formed upon the under side of the cover B around the groove b1, and in such a position as to rest upon the middle part of the rubber ring 'C so as when the cover is secured in place tol press upon the .said ring'and thus more Aeilectually prevent the passage of air. The top Y `or u-pper side of the cover B isrounded oi or made higher in the middle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so thatwhen the pressure is applied it may bear mostly upon the middle partei the said cover B. The cover B is secured to the can A b`y the metallic strap D, the ends of which are bent downward to project along the sides of the can A, and its extreme ends are then bent inward to enter the grooves a2 formed in the upper part of the opposite sides of the can A. The mouths of the grooves a2 are a little enlarged, as shown in Fig. 1, for convenience in entering the enrls or" the strap D. The grooves a2 are inclined` downward om their mouths toward their other ends, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the strap D may bind the cover B the more tightly the further it maybepushed from the mouths ofthe said grooves a2. The straps D should be made of such a length `Ias to bring the cover B closely to its seat when it reaches about the middle of the can. The can A and cover B are designed to be made of glass, earthen, or stone ware, as maybe desired or conb1 and bead b2 upon its under side, and the c lampin g-strap'D, substantially as shown and described.
