chines, and more particularly to the class of.
clothes washing machines.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a machine of this character wherein a plurality of vacuum or compression elements will act upon the clothes to pound the same and also to create a cir culation of the washing liquid through and around the said clothes so as to thoroughly cleanse the same while the machine is active.
Another object of the invention is the provision of amachine of this character wherein the pounders thereof are-actuated in a novel manner to insure the perfect working of the machine for the proper cleaning of the clothes placed therein.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a machine of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and efficient in its operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the machine with the lid or cover section closed.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the machine showing in detail the support for the lid or cover section.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of a modified form of the washing machine adapted for attachment to a wash tub.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view through the body of the machine.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the washing machine comprises a substantially rectangular shaped body or casing 10, supported upon legs 11 which are fastened to the corners of the body in any suitable Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 3, 1917.
Serial No. 91,214.
manner, upon this body is a lid or cover section 11 formed with an inner lining 172 throughout the side and end walls thereof which is adapted to overlap the joint between the body and the lid or cover section when closed so as to render the same water-tight to avoid leakage during the operation .of the machine. The lid or cover section 11 is swingingly connected to the body 10 by means of ordinary leaf hinges 13 so that it may be raised for the opening of the body to permit the placing of clothes therein or the removal of the same therefrom.
Located within the body 10 is a removable basket or supporting tray which comprises a vertical corrugated marginal wall H and a foraminous or reticulated bottom 15 joined to the said wall 14, and in this basket or tray are held the clothes to be washed. The wall of the tray or basket when placed within the body 10 lies contiguous to the wall of the said body, while the corrugations 16 serve to permit the passage of the water between the wall 14 of the tray and the side wall of the body 10 when forced through the foraminous or reticulated bottom 15 of the tray or basket, and thus in this manner the water circulates within the machine.
Mounted on the top of the lid or cover section 10 centrally thereof is a socketed bearing plate 17', in the socket of which is detach-ably threaded a vertical standard or post 18 formed with a bifurcated forked upper end 19 in which is held a pivot 20 supporting a rocking lever 21 terminating in handles 22, while connected to this lever 21 are hangers 28 to which are pivotally connected the forked stems 24 of inverted U-shaped plungers 25, the same working through stuffing boxes 26 mounted in the top of the lid or cover section 11 so as to protrude within the body 10, and on the inner ends of the plungers are fixed hollow vacuum or compression heads 27 which are adapted. toreciprocate with the body for the pounding of the clothes therein and for creating circulation of washing liquid within the machine.
On the outer face of the hinged side of the lid or cover section 11 contiguous to the top thereof are mounted bearing plates 28 carrying pivots 29 to which are connected the upper ends of swinging props 30, the same being also connected to swingfor holding the said lid or cover section when open.
In Fig. 3 there is shown a slight modification of the invention wherein the body 32 of the machine is of circular formation so as to fit an ordinary wash tub, while the vacuum or compression members 33 are made of semi-cylindrical shape to correspond with the form of the body 32 so as to work therein. Otherwise the modified form of construction is identical to the construction hereinbefore set forth.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and
therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
hat is claimed is In a washing machine, the combination with a single undivided chamber provided with vertically corrugated side walls, of a pair of hollow pounder heads open throughout their bottoms and arranged within the chamber to provide suction means for alternately moving and acting upon the contents of said chamber, said heads collectively being of a size approximately corresponding to the inner sectional area of the chamber and means for alternately moving and guidinp; said heads vertically within said cha1nber.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in presence of a witness.
