MILTON SESSIONS AND DAVID MUZZEY, OF ST. ALBAN S, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT m CAR-AXLE Boxes.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,069, dated December 19, 1871.
a To all whom-it may concern:
Be it known that we, Mrrxron SESSIONS and DAVID MUZZEY, of St. Albans, in the county of Franklin and in the State of Vermont, have into the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a railroad-car box andjournal-bearin g with automatic oiling device,
as Will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of our car-box, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the journal-bearing.
Arepresents the box through which the journal B passes, said journal bearing against the bearing'block G. This block is concave on its under side to fit the journal, and in the center of its upper side is a circular concavity fitting ona circular projection, D, on the inside of the top of the box A, thus forming a balljoint and making the journal-box self-adjusting. On the upper side of the box A, at the outer end, is an oilreservoir, E, from which the oil passes through a tube or channel, G, to and through the ball or a projection D, and then through an aperture, a,
in the corresponding concavity of the bearingblock G. From thisaperture a one or more grooves, b, are made'in the under surface of said block to conduct the oil to various parts of the journal. The oil'passage through the ball-joint allows the parts to be kept oiled and free, and causes the main flow to the center of the bearing-block, from whence it is radiated each .way over the axle.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claimvas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The box A with semicircular projections D, bearing-block G with semicircular recess, within which hits the projection D, which is provided with a central oil-passage, a, in combination with the reservoir E and oil-ehannelG, all substantially as set forth. p
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 23d day of September, 1871.
