Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN R. MESTIEB, 0F GALVESTON, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILWAY-CAR TRUCKS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. MEsTrER, of Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in BailroadGar Trucks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which Figure l represents an end elevation of a railroad-truck having my invention, one journal-box being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a side eleva-- tion, partly in section, of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view, partly in section, of one side of the same.
Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts. A
My invention consists in improving the journal-boxes of car-axles, as hereinafter fully described and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
A in the dra-wing represents a car-axle, carrying the wheels B B in the ordinary manner. C is the journal-box, made of halves, a. b, of which each contains a semi-cylindrical cavity for holding the end of the axle. Bolts e c serve to lock the halves of the box together. Within the halves ofthe box are placed, in suitable grooves provided for their reception, two semi-annular plates, d d, made of case-hardened steel. They embrace a collar, e, which is placed upon and securely fastened to the axle, and also made of case-hardened steel. The plates d constitute a swimming journal for the axle, which, by its collar, has its entire bearing thereon. rlhe eollar has flanges f at the ends to embrace the journal, as shown `in Fig. 3, for the purpose of preventing longitudinal displacement. Each plate cl is held in place by a screw. The upper screw g, iitted through the upper half of the box, is tubular, and carries an oil-reservoir, h, at the upper end for lubricating purposes. The lower screw z' is fitted through the lower half of the boX. j is a rubber washer, placed upon the axle and crowded, by a' spiral spring, k, against the back ofthe journal-box to entirely close the aperture in the same. The rubber prevents dust and impurities from entering the box, and does away with the packing heretofore used, and also with the expensive brass disks.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The swimming journal d, arranged in the axle-box C and combined with the collare on the axle, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. rIhe rubber washer j, fitted upon the axle and combined with the spiral spring K, which holds it against the back of the journal-box, as
set forth.
