ATTACHMENT F013. CIRCULAR COMES.
Application filed January 29, 1 917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL HADFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at 518 Howard street, Lawrence, in the. county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Circular Combs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to circular wool combing machines in which there are a large revolving comb circle and a small revolving comb circle tangentially disposed inside thereof together with a dabbing brush or dabber and a brush plate proximate the tangential point between the large and small circles.
In such combs there are usually two or.
more small circles but I will describe my device as used in connection with one small circle and the large circle. Manifestly similar devices may be used in connection with more small circles if desired.
In such machines, both circles revolve in the same direction which I will assume to be from left to right, and I will call the side of both circles to the left of the tangential point the receiving side, and to the right the delivery side.
In such combs there is a dabber or dabbing brush which reciprocates vertically directly over the tangential point of the two circles. This dabber usually extends out toward the delivery side, while at the fiber receiving side is a brush plate which slopes upward from at or near the tangential point. This plate is attached to a plate arm fixed to any part of the machine and it, as well as the dabber, is adjustable.
Theoretically in a perfectly adjusted comb, the lower edge of the brush plate should adjoin the side of the dabber exactly at the tangential point, but they are not usu-- ally so perfectly adjusted, and if the plate does not reach the tangential point, there is a very small substantially V shaped space on the fiber receiving side between the two circles into which noils, nips, specks, dirt, etc., drop or are forced down by the dabber. Such material accumulates in the space until it is picked up eventually by the fiber and the revolving circles and is carried along to the injury of the work.
Moreover, the fiber which is forced down between the circles before it reaches the tangential point, does not get suificiently pulled Specification of LettersPatent.

through the pins on the two circles, if at all, and the noils, dirt, etc, remain in the fiber after it is delivered by the circles. This combing is therefore imperfect.
The fiber should not be forced in between the teeth of the two circles before arriving at the tangential point to secure the most perfect combing.
My invention is devised to fill up the substantially V shaped space mentioned and to prevent the wool, noils or dirt from getting down between the two circles before they reach the tangential point.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of part of a comb showing part of a. large and part of a small circle together with the brush plate and dabber. Fig; 2 is a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan view of my blade. Fig. 4b isa perspective showing the blade in position with the brush plate, dabber, and small circle removed.
A is the large circle and B is the small circle tangentially disposed inside thereof, the tangential point being represented by 10.
C is the dabber or dabbing brush which may be of any usual construction of bristles or blades part being shown in full lines and the rest in dotted lines.
D is the incline commonly used on such machines, F is the bracket, and G is the incline bar allof which are old.
H is the brush plate supported on incline bar G in a well known manner.
My invention consists substantially of a curved tapering blade L which is made of flat sheet metal with a shank 11 through which are slots 12, 12 through which I pass set screws 18 into suitable threaded holes in bracket F to hold my blade in position and to permit its adjustment horizontally.
Preferably, my blade extends upward at 12 and again extends at 13 in a direction parallel with shank 11, the end 13 being curved to conform substantially with the curvature of the large circle and being tapered at the end to fill up the space between the teeth of the large and small circles on the fiber receiving side thereof.
I prefer to adjustably attach my blade to the bracket F but it may be fixed to any other part of the frame of the machine in any manner desired.
I claim:
1. In a worsted comb having a large comb circle and a small comb circle tangentially disposed inside thereof, a tapering blade fixed to the frame of the machine, the tapering end extending between the large and small comb circles.
2., In a circular combing machine having a large comb circle and a small comb circle tangentially disposed inside thereof, and a dabbing brush plate proximate the tangential point between the two circles on the fiber receiving side thereof, a curved tapering blade fixed to the frame of the machine and extending under the .dabbing brush Copies of this patent may be obtained for plate into the space between the two circles as described.
3. In a circular combing machine the combination with a large comb circle of a small comb circle tangentially disposed inside thereof, and means between said circles and under the dabbing brush plate for preventing noils, nips and dirt from falling between the circles and there accumulating to the injury of the work.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
SAMUEL I-IADFIELD.
