To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. WVILLIAM BONSAOK, of Bonsacks, in the county of Roanoke and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oomb-Plates for Doffer-Oombs of Oarding'Engines; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon My invention has for its object to improve the construction of the doffer knife or comb employed 011 carding-machines for the purpose of removing the fleece from the carding-cylinder direct, or from the dofi'er-cylinder sometimes employed, whereby there will be no liability of tearing or cutting the fiber of the cotton or wool, but the same will be delivered intact at the side where the sliver is formed and finds its exit through the perforations and is delivered to the containingcans; and it further consists in a certain improved construction which will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View through a portion of acarding-eugine of approved construction; Fig. 2, a perspective view of a'portion of adotfer-c'oinb constructed in accordance with my invention and of the trumpet or guide for the sliver.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
Heretofore the doffer-combs employed in carding-machines have been constructed with a number of serrations 011 their lower or operating edges and adapted to be vibrated very rapidly in proximity to the carding-cylindcr or to a doffer-cylinder" that operates to remove the fleece from the same primarily. These combs are preferably placed at a slight angle to the axis of the cylinder against which they operate, so that the fleece is more readily guided to the perforation at the side of the machine, from where it issues in the form of the sliver.
As stated, the teeth of the combs are formed in the shape of equilateral triangles that is, with the two sides having equal angles---=but the objection to this is that the fleece when pulled to one side is drawn across the ends and sides of the teeth and the fiber is cut or torn by the sharp points, producing, of course, a
poor quality of thread or yarn, liable to break very readily, and it is this portion particularly of the machine that my invention is designed to improve by making one side of the teeth of the dolfer-comb more inclined than the other, the shorter side ofthe teeth being presented to the side of the machine where the sliver is formed, so that the fleece will be drawn over the long side of the teeth and will not be torn or cut by the sharpends of the same as in constructions heretofore.

At the side of the machine is provided a perforated 'trumpet, 0, through which the fleece is drawn by any suitable mechanism to' form the sliver adapted to be delivered to the can in which it is usually placed, or to another suitable machine adapted to operate upon it in any suitable manner.
In Fig. 2 is shown a portion of the doffercomb B in its operative position relative to the sliver-forming trumpet or cone, and, as stated, provided with the teeth E E, having the sideb inclined to any desired angle-say thirty-five degrees, or any other found most convenientand the side 6 inclined at a much less angle, as indicated. The inclined sideof theteeth is, as stated, placed away from the perforation, by which thesliveris slightly condensed, as usual, and the fleece is drawn over this, thus obviating the cutting produced by the ordinary combs.
The comb, instead of being employed to remove the fleece directly from the carding-cylinder, can as well be employed to remove it from a doffer-cylinder placed between it and the carding-cylinder, and can be operated either upon the upper or lower side of the same, as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. The herein-described doffercomb having the teeth, one side of which has a greater inclination than the other, substantially as described.
2. In a carding-machine, the combination, I 5 with the cylinder 011 which the fleece is carried and the sliver-forming device, of a doffercomb having the teeth, one side of which has J. WILLIAM BONSAGK.
