@NHED Sraras PATENT rrica.
GUSTAVUS E. TAFT, OF IVHITINSVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE W HITIN MACHINE WORKS, OF SAME PLACE.
CARDlNG-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,576, dated October 19, 1880.
Application filed March 11, 1880.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVUS E. TAFT, of Whitinsville, in the county of \Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarding-liachines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to machines for carding cotton; and the object of my improvement is to obtain with my machine a cotton-sliver of better quality than usual, and to attain this result with a very small loss of good cotton.
Heretofore the most common method of carding cotton has been to have the large cylinder r 5 take the cotton direct from the feed-rolls; but as an improvement upon this mode leaders 01' licker-in cylinders have also been used. One objection to these is, that when running at the desired speed, too much good cotton is thrown off under the feed-rolls with the dust,
motes, seeds, &c.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side vie w of a carding-machine having my improvements. Fig. 2 represents a front view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal vertical section of the forward portion of the card- 0 ing-machine as made of sheet metal, Fig. 4,
a portion of the same on a larger scale, and with the front casing as constructed of wood.
In this machine the cylinder A, licker-in 13, workers 0 and O, and feed-rollers a and a are 5 similar to those commonly used in cotton-cards,
and are mounted in adjustable bearings secured to the frame D; but with my improvement the opening under the licker-in cylinder 13, or between the card-tie or girt E and the worker O, for the escape of dust, motes, trash, &c., is rendered adjustable as follows: The front casing, F, made either of sheet metal, as shown in Fig. 3, or of wood, as shown in Fig. 4, is hinged to the frame at g and retained in 4 5 position-by pins h, passing through holes (or one of a series of holes, (I, in the two side frames of the machine) and engaging with or passing in front of the upper portion of said casing F. To the front of this casing is attached the dust-box G in such a position under the feed rolls as to receive the dust, motes, &c., released fiect the impurities out of the machine.
(No model.)
from the cotton by the card-clothing of the licker-in cylinder B, and adapted to be easily let down, partly turned over, and emptied of its contents by turning down nearly the whole 5 5 front casing without being entirely disconnected from the machine, and without danger to the card-clothing of the licker-in B in replacing it, as is liable with dust-boxes secured to the frame as heretofore made.
' To the top of the front casing, F, is secured a plate, H, to divide the air-current and de- This plate is of metal, long enough to extend a little beyond the edge of the card-clothing, and wide enough to admitof sufticient adjustment as the clothing wears on the licker-in cylinder, and as the licker-in follows up the large cylinder A.
To adjust the plate H its lower edge is provided with a lug, 2', near each end. These lugs are tapped to receive screws 70, having their stems grooved or formed with necks to engage between the branches of forked stands f, projectingfrom the casing, and be sustained thereby while advancing or retracting the plate H. This plate is also connected to the casing by four or more screws, m, screwed into said casing and passing through slots in said plate, to allow the necessary sliding movement of the plate when it is desirable to change its position.
I have obtained good results by setting the top edge of the plate about five-sixteenths of an inch from the card-clothing of the lickerin cylinder, and about half-way between the feed-rolls and the periphery of the first worker, for the motes, seeds, and impurities to strike against; but these distances may vary according to the speed of the licker-in, the quality of the cotton, 850. The under edge of the 0 card-tie or girt E is cut away at e, to allow the forward casing, adjustable plate H, and the dust-box to swing down when emptying the latter, and to provide a suitably-sized passage for the escape of the dust and impurities.
In the above description I have called the front of the machine the end where the cotton fiber is fed to the card.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim is-- r 1. In a carding-machine, the adjustable plate H, extending in front of said machine, in 0011].-
bination with the licker-in cylinder and cardtie, said plate being arranged between said licker-in and card-tie, to regulate the opening under said licker-in and to deflect impurities outwardly, substantially as specified.
2. In a carding-machine, the combination of the frame thereof, the front casing, adjustable plate H, secured to said casing, feed-rolls, and licker-in cylinder, located and arranged sub stantially as shown and described.
3. In a carding-machine, the combination of the frame thereof, the front casing", the feedrolls, card-tie E. licker-in cylinder B, and adjustable plate H, arranged between said cardtie and licker-in and secured to the front casing hinged to the frame, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. In a carding-machine, the combination of the frame thereof, feed-rollers, and licker'in cylinder retained in bearings upon said frame, a front casing hinged thereto, a plate, H, made adjustable on said casing, and a dust-box secured to the same casing, substantially as and for the purpose described.
5. In a carding-machine, the combination of the frame thereof, a front casinghinged thereto under the feed-rolls, and a dust-box secured to said hinged casing and adapted to be partly turned over, substantially as and for the purose described.
