Description

G. B. DAME.
LIFE PRESERVER.
APPLICATION HLED MAY 26. 19l6.
mgwwv Patented Mar. 27, 1917.
GEORGE B. DAT/IE,
OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
LIFE-PRESERVER.
Application filed May 26, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. DAME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Preservers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a life preserver and one of its objects is the provision of a device of this character, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
Another object of this invention is to provide a circular hoop or ring, having a circular series of cork slabs supported at their inner ends by the hoop or ring to provide a preserver which will remain afloat for a considerable length of time under all conditions.
A further object of this invention is to provide means surrounding the outer ends of the series of cork slc bs for retaining them upon the hoop or ring.
A still further obj ect of this invention is to provide means for attaching a hand rope to the series of cork slabs, whereby a person may readily grasp the preserver when in water.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention'consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my 1nvention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view partly in sectlon of a life preserver, constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary tional view of the same,
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modified form of my invention, and
Fig. 4c is a fragmentary diametrical sectional View taken on the line H of Fig. 3.
Referring in detail to the drawmg, the numeral 1 indicates a flat hoop or ring condiametrical sec- Specifi'cation of Letters Patent.

structed from wood or other fibrous material. A circular series of cork segments are provided with their inner ends recessed as illustrated at 3 to receive the hoop or ring 1. The outer ends of the cork segments are each provided with a substantially semi-circular groove 4:, for receiving a rope 5, which has its ends secured together in any suitable manner for binding and holding the cork segments 2 upon the hoop or ring 1. The cork segments 2 are bound or wrapped with a cover 6 of canvas or other suitable material for protecting the cork segments and also aiding in binding them in their proper positions. A hand rope 7 is secured to the cover 6 at the outer periphery of the cork seg ments in any well known manner, providing means whereby a person or persons may readily grip the device when in the water to float themselves upon the surface thereof.
Referring to my modified form of invention, it consists of a hoop or ring 8 constructed from any suitable material such as metal, wood or the like having flanges thereon. A circular series of cork slabs 9 are provided with their inner ends grooved to receive the hoop or ring 8 whereby the flanges will overlie the ends of the cork slabs and have their outer ends grooved to receive a hoop or ring 10 constructed of metal, wood or other suitable material for retaining the cork slabs in their proper position. A plu rality of metallic bands 11 are secured around the cork slabs and the hoops or rings 8 and 10 and a hand rope 12 is passed under the bands 11 and the hoop 10 for forming a hand grip whereby a person or persons may grip the device while in the water. The cork slabs 9 are not covered with canvas, obviating the danger of manufacturing concerns placing inferior cork slabs upon the device.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A life preserver comprising series of circular cork slabs provided with their inner ends grooved, a hoop positioned within the grooves of the inner ends of the cork slabs, means surrounding the outer ends of the cork slabs for retaining them upon the hoop and in proper position, and means for securing a hand rope to the cork slabs.
2. A life preserver comprising a series of circular cork slabs provided with their inner and outer ends grooved, a continuous hoop positioned Within the grooves upon the inner ends of the cork slabs, a rope positioned Within the grooves in the outer ends of the cork slabs and provided With its ends secured together for retaining the cork slabs upon the hoop, a cover surrounding the cork slabs, and a hand rope secured to the cover at the outer ends of the cork slabs to form a hand hold.
3. A life preserver comprising a series of Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by Washington, D. 0.
circular cork slabs provided with their inner and outer ends grooved, arhoop positioned within the groovesof the inner ends of the cork slabs, a second hoop positioned Within the grooves of the outer ends of the cork slabs for retaining the cork slabs uponthe first mentioned hoop, metallic bands surrounding the cork slabs and hoops, and a hand rope secured to the bands for forming a hand hold.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
