Description

PULLEY. APPLIOATION I'ILED JULY 28, 1908.
Patented July 13,1909.

WILLIAM a. Room, or I'IODGENVILLE, KENTUCKY.
PULLEY.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. tour'r,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Hodgenville, in the county of Larue and 1 State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulleys,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in pulleys, and the object is to provide means for using a covering of rope or other similar filamentous material which is much cheaper than the ordinary leather or sheet covering now in use.
A further object is to provide a pulley which will save time by reason of being simple and requiring the-exercise of practically no skill so that an ordinary laborer aboutthe machinery can cover the pulley in a few minutes when one covering becomes A further object is to provide a pulleyhaving a better adhering surface for contact with the belt, whereby the belt is rendered less liable to slip than on a sheet covering.
A further object is to provide a more durable cover than an ordinary sheet covering, and one which will save wear and tear on the belt by reason of being held firmly and immovably upon the pulley without the use of any rivetsor nails which are constantlybecoming loose and protrude from the surface of the covering and in that way coming in contact with the belt and materially in creasing its wear, and especially so when for any cause, the belt may slip, and as a result- I of thus lessening the actual slipping of the belt, there is a saving of power.
With these objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings z-Figure l is a View in side elevation, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectlon through the center of the pulley, and, F1g. 31s a VlQW of one of the ferentially grooved as at 5.
The pulley comprises a hub 1, spokes 2 and 3, and a rim 4,.the latter being circum- In the form Specification of Letters Patent.

two directions, namely radially as at 7, 7, and longitudinally parallel with the axis of the pulley as at 8, 8, the latter orifices being enlarged at the outer surface to receive the eyes of the eye-bolts 9, 9, in registry with the orifices 7', 7, while the shanks of the eyebolts occupy the orifices 8, 8.
The wearing surface of the pulley is made up of coils of rope or other twisted filamentous material 10, wound around the periphery of the pulley as close as may be in the groove 5, and the ends 11, 11, of the rope or twisted material are inserted through the radial orifices 7,7, and the eyes of the bolts 9, 9, whereupon the nuts 12, 12, on the bolts are screwed up tightly until the ends of the rope are securely fastened. In this Way, I am enabled to provide an inexpensive but most effectual friction surface which, While suliiciently smooth, is yet ridged, thus taking a firm hold upon the belt with suflicient frictional pressure contact to practically prevent slipping, and thus affording a surface which an ordinary laborer can easily and quickly renew with material usually at hand, or which may be easily kept in stock, without the exercise of anything morethan ordinary skill.
More or less slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth, but
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a pulley having a grooved rim provided with intersecting radial and longitudinal orifices, of a removable rim covering coiled in the groove and having its ends inserted in the radial orifices and eye-bolts extending through the longitudinal orifices with the eyes in alinement with the radial orifices to receive the ends of the rim covering, and means for adjusting the eye-bolt whereby the eyes will be drawn from alinement withthe radial orifices for holding the ends of the covering securely in place. 2. The combination with a pulley having a grooved rim and provided with intersecting radial and longitudinal orifices, the
longitudinal orifices being enlarged at the ing, and means for tightening the eye-bolts outer surface, of a removable rim covering to secure the said ends. 10 coiled in the groove and having its ends in- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature serted in the radial orifices, and eye-bolts in presence of two witnesses.

whereby to receive the ends of the rim cover- L. B. HANDLEY.
