J OHN, F. OGONNOR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 \VILLIAIVI H. MINER, OF CHAZY, NEW YORK.
DETACI-IABLE DRAW-BAR AND YOKE CONNECTION.
Application filed August 11, 1916.
To all whom it may concem Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoNNoR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Detachable Draw- Bar and Yoke Connections, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in detachable draw bar and yoke connection.
The object of the invention is to provide a draw bar and yoke connection wherein the parts may be readily assembled or disassembled while the draft rigging is in position on" the car.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a draw bar and a yokeillustrating one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1 and taken on the line 2-2 thereof. And Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the front portion of one of the yoke parts.
In said drawing, A denotes a draw bar or coupler, the butt of which is hollowed out and open to the rear, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. The recess within the draw bar butt comprises a vertically extending front por-.
tion 10 substantially rectangular in cross section, a rear portion 11 of similar form and a narrower connecting section 12, the latter being formed by oppositely disposed,
vertically extending ribs or projections 13 formed on the inner face of the side walls of the draw bar butt. The yoke consists of two similar parts B, B, each of which comprises an upper arm 14, lower arm 15, rear connecting piece 16 and front side plate 17 which connects the front ends of the upper and lower arms. The side plate 17 has its inner face flush with the inner edges of the upper and lower arms 14 and 15, and on its outer face, the plate 17 is provided with a vertically extending channel or groove 18 which corresponds in size and shape to the ribs 13. With the construction thus described, it is evident that the front portion of each yoke member B will fit against the side of the draw bar butt in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2 and the dimensions of the parts are so arranged that, when the Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 114,313.
yoke parts are in position, there will be a space 29 therebetween, which is slightly in excess of the depth of the channel or groove 18 in each of the yoke parts. This is done so that one yoke part may be first inserted within the draw bar butt, after which the other yoke part may be similarly inserted and finally the two parts separated to the position shown in Fig. 2. In order to hold the parts in the separated position, I have provided a vertical pin 19 which is insertible upwardly through the bottom wall of the draw bar butt and between the two yoke parts, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. Each of the yoke parts, on its inner face, is provided with a vertically extending groove 20 to fit the pin 19 and assist in properly positioning the latter. The pin 19 is preferably tapered at its top as indicated at 21 in Fig. 1, to thereby facilitate its insertion. The lower wall of the draw bar butt is provided with a boss 22 through which is passed a cotter 23 to retain the pin 19 in position. As clearly indicated in Fig. 3 at 2 l-2 l, shoulders are provided at the forward ends of the upper and lower yoke arms, which shoulders engage the rear vertical edges of the draw bar butt so that, in bufling, the blows are transmitted partly from the draw bar butt directly in line with the yoke arms through said shoulders 2424:. In draft, it is apparent that the pull is exerted from the draw bar through the ribs 13 to the yoke parts.
With the construction shown, it is apparent that the draw bar may be readily applied to or disconnected from the yoke while the latter is in position on the car, since the yoke parts may be moved together or separated while in operative position.
I claim:
1. In a draw bar and yoke connection, the combination with a draw bar having the butt thereof provided with a recess opened toward the rear, of a two-part yoke, the latter having its forward portions insertible within the recess and the draw bar butt, and means for retaining the yoke parts and draw bar in operative position when assembled.
2. In a device of the character described. the combination with a draw bar having a recessed butt open to the rear, of a two-part yoke having its forward ends insertible within said recess, cooperating, inter-engaging shoulders formed on the interior of the draw bar butt and the yoke parts, and means for retaining the draw bar and yoke parts in operative position when assembled.
3. I11 a device of the character described, the combination with a draw bar having a hollow butt, of a two-part yoke having the forward ends thereof insertible within said recess, and means for separating the yoke parts when the latter have their forward ends assembled within the recessed butt.
I. In a device of the character described, the combination with a draw bar, of a yoke formed in two parts, inter-engaging, cooperating shoulders formed on the draw bar butt and the yoke parts, and detachable means insertible between the yoke parts for forcing the latter into operative engagement with the draw bar and retaining the parts in proper assembled position.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a draw bar having the butt thereof provided with a recess opened toward the rear, of a yoke consisting of two parts, each part having a plate at its forward end insertible within said recess, each of said plates being grooved and the inner walls of the draw bar butt being shouldered stricted portion, of a yoke comprising two similar parts, each of said parts having a vertically extending plate at its forward end, said plate portions of the yoke parts being insertible within said recess, the plates having a channel located to co-incide with the restricted portions of said recess, and'a vertically arranged key insertible through the bottom of the draw bar and between the yoke parts to separate the latter when mounted within the draw bar butt and to hold the yoke parts and draw bar in operative engagement.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 7th day of August, 1916.
JOHN F. OGONNOR.
