Description

' JAMES IVI. FLESHMAN, OF CORYDON, INDIANAP` FILE-HANDLE.
LZZOAOG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 27, 1917.
Application led April 2.1, 1916. Serial No. 92,748.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES M. F LnsHMAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, suoli as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to file handles, and has for its primary object to provide simple and efficient means forholding the le during the reciprocation incident to the operation of the latter without danger of injury to the hands of the operator, and without danger of the ile becoming detached from the handle during the tiling operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a file handle of the character described and for the purposes set forth, which is capable of attachment to files of various sizes Without making adjustments in the handle.
A still further and particular object of the invention is to provide a handle of the type referred to which is of extremely simple and inexpensive construction, to which files may bereadily attached to or detached, which will prove practically everlasting in use, and which will prove thoroughly efficient l in practice.
Vith these objects in view, together with others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawings and particularly pointed out in the claim.
rlhe invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l, is a side elevation of a conventional form of iile and illustrating the application of a handle embodying my invention,
Fig. 2, is a bottom plan view of the device illustrated in Fig. l, and
Fig. 8, is a detail perspective view of the file attaching plate removed from the handle.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, t indicates a hand grip, the same being similar in size, material and construction as the ordinary wood saw handle, an opening 5 being provided therein through which the fingers may project to firmly grip the handle.
The lowermost edge of the handle 4 is straight, and secured to this edge by suitable rivets or screws 6 is a thin metallic plate 7. This plate is of a length and width equal to that of the lower edge of the handle 4. The lowermost face of the plate 7 is flat as shown and is formed adjacent one end with a pair of spaced outwardly projecting bosses 8. These bosses extend inwardly from the rear end of the plate, and have their adjacent faces disposed perpendicular to the lower face of the plate 7. These bosses are so formed upon the plate as to be spaced from each other at their forward ends a distance slightly greater than the distance between the adjacent faces at their rearward end, the said faces thus converging from the forward toward the rearward end of the plate and are straight. These bosses project downwardly from the under face of the plate 7 a distance substantially equal to or slightly less than the thickness of the ordinary 'liat l'ile, and the converging sides of the ordinary handle portion 9 of a file are adapted to be engaged between the converging walls of the bosses 8 to firmly bind the said tapered handle between the said bosses. It is thus apparent that the lile will be rmly secured to the handle, and in such manner that slight tapping of the protruding end of the lile handle will loosen the iile so that the same may be readily withdrawn from bindingengagement between the bosses 8. It will be observed further that the bosses are so constructed and arranged as to enable the same to engage with file handles of various widths. By forming the bosses 8 so as to project from the plate 7 a distance equal to or less than the thickness of the ordinary lile, it is apparent that the device may be used as a metal plane on a flat surface, the entire abraiding surface of the lile being enabled to contact with the flat surface operated upon.
W'hat is claimed is:
A file holder comprising a plate having a Hat upper face and a lower face provided at its rear end with a pair of bosses having opposed faces at right angles to the plane of the remainder of the lower face and converging rearwardly, the remainder of said lower face forming a. continuous unbroken In testimony whereof, I aX my signaplane, said plate beinglprofded With screw ture, in the presence of tWo Witnesses. receiving openin s, a ian le seated on the upper face of th plate, and screws passing JAMES M' FLESHMAN through the openings and into the handle, Witnesses:
the heads of said screws lying Wholly Within CHARLES A. KELLER,
said plate. XVM. H. CHINN.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
