Description

W. l. PITCAN.
QQRSET.
APPLICATION FILED OCT- 6. 1916.

WILLIAM I SIDOR PITCAN, F MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
CORSET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM ISIDOR Prr- CAN, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of Manchester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention refers to corsets and .in particular what are known as figure-reducing corsets. The object of the invention is to provide corsets, which will serve for compressing the abdomen, and also for supporting the abdomen. Or, which will serve for either purpose separately. In the latter case the corsets will be specially suitable for wear by expectant mothers, or by persons requir ing an effective abdominal support without compression.
The invention will be described with the aid of the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the front of the corset while,
Fig. 2 is a corresponding view of the rear of the corset.
According to the invention, each corset half a, is provided with a broad band 6, one end 0 of which is secured to the busk or front edge of the corset at a point slightly above the lower end of the busk, while the other end (Z is left free. This band, which is preferably made of elastic webbing, which is so 1 cut and arranged that it inclines upwardly and toward the waist line. At its free end, the band I) is provided with buckles or like fastenings 7.
At the back of each corset section, are secured two straps g, g, which from the points of connection incline downwardly, the straps being designed to extend over the hips to'the front of the corset, where their free ends may be connected by the buckles f, f to the broad band aforesaid on the front of the respective corset sections.
With the band andstraps of each corset section thus disposed any tension produced by tightening the straps will be exerted along lines extending diagonally from a point, or points, at or near the middle of the back of the corset, to the front lower part of the corset. By thus exerting a pull on the front of the corset, the abdomen is compressed and the desired figure obtained.
A further but narrower elastic band it is secured to the busk or front edge 0 of each corset section at a point below the before- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Man 2'7 191% Application filed October 6, 1916.
Serial No. 124,112.
named broad band, the two bands (upper and lower) slightly overlapping each other. This further and lower band is arranged to lie more or less parallel with the lower edge of the corset section to which it is attached, and at its free end is a buckle or like fastening 2'.
To the back part of each corset section, is secured one end of a further strap 7' which also lies more or less parallel with the bot tom edge of the corset section, and thus is adapted to be connected by the buckle z to the lower band it at the front of said corset section. The lower edge of the corset will preferably be out to extend well below the ups.
By means of the broad bands 6, b and straps g, g the abdomen may be compressed, while by means of the lower bands h, h and straps j, j the abdomen may besupported. Either set of bands and straps may be used alone for its particular purpose, while the other set is not used.
The bands willpreferably be made of elastic webbing, while the straps will be of cloth or tape as commonly used with corsets.
Although preferring a single broad upper band for each corset section, two narrower bands may be provided. In this connection the bands may be arranged at slightly different angles, but the strap of each will be secured in such manner as to cause the pull to be taken by the back of the corset and where the spine can best bear the strain.
The corsets will be made with side lacings 7:, as well as the back lacing Z to allow of the corsets being adjusted to suit the wearers figure.
What I claim is:
Corsets for compressing or supporting the abdomen comprising in combination two corset sections, means for connecting said sections at the back and front, a comparatively short broad band of elastic material secured to the busk or front edge of each corset half at a point slightly above the lower end of the.
busk and inclined upwardly toward the Waist line, fastening means at the free cornersof said bands, two inelastic straps securedto the back part of each corset half and inclined downwardly at an angle corresponding to and in line with the edges of the beforementioned broad band, one of the free ends of said straps being adjustably secured to one of the ends of the broad bands, a second elastic band secured to the busk or front edge of each corset section at a point near the lower edge of the same, and arranged to lie substantially parallel with said lower edge together with a complemental strap one end of which is secured to the back part of the corset while the other end is adjustably secured to the before-mentioned band, said strap also being arranged to lie along the lower edge of the corset, and forming a continuation of the band and supple 1o mental-y lacing means in each half section, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses. WVILLIAM ISIDOR PITGAN. Witnesses:
F. G. PENNINGTON, J. BERNARD HAY WVARD.
