To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jonx F. OCoxxon, a
States.- residing at Chicago. in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Railroad-Car Draft-Rigging, of which the following is a full, clear, concise. and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in I railroad car draft rigging.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a simple connection for a draw-bar and a draft yoke. Further objects will appear from a description of the invention herein following.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in vertical longitudinal section, of a draft riggn'ng embodying. my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of draw-bar and Fig. 4 is a central vertical longitudinal section of the structure in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates a draft yoke adapted to embrace a draft gear, (not shown in the drawings,) as will be readily understood. 6 indicates a draw-bar, 7 a buffer block and 8 a drawbar carry iron. The yoke 5 comprises an upper limb 9, a lower limb 10, connected at their rear by the member 11, and forwardly provided with a preferably hollow head 12 adapted to receive the butt 13 of the drawbar (3, the said head being open from underneath, as indicated at 14, and being interiorly provided with the upper gib 15 and the inwardly extended vertical shoulders 16. The draw-bar butt 13 is provided at its .sides with the vertical shoulders 17 which engage when the draw-bar and yoke are assembled against the lateral vertical shoulders 16-16 of the yoke head. The draw-bar is also provided with an upper shoulder 18 adapted to engage against the gib 15 of the yoke.
I employ no rivets, keys, bolts, bands or other similar structures to secure the drawbar within the yoke head. The draw-bar is held in its assembled position, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing, by means of the carry iron 8, the carry iron having a portion closely adjacent the rear end of the shank 19 of the draw-bar 6, which, together with Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Application filed July 31, 1916. Serial No. 112,245.

In the modified form illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. the butt. of a standard draw-bar is shown having the transverse shoulders 30 and 31. Upon this butt is mounted a pairof interengaging members 32 and upper and lower-shoulders 34 and 35 to engage the transverse shoulders of thedrawbar, the said members 32 and 33 each havin an upper off-set portion 36 and a lower 0 set portion 37, in order that retaining means, as for instance the rivets 3838, may be passed through said off-set portions and through the usual rivet holes 3939 in the draw-bar butt to secure the said members upon said draw-bar butt. Each ofsaid members is provided with a laterally extended shoulder O forming the vertical shoulders to engage against the vertical shoulders in the yoke, shown in Fig. 1, and the said members also form a transverse upper shoulder 41 adapted to engage a gib 15, as shown in the yoke disclosed in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The members 32 and 33 are each provided with a preferably integral short key 42. the said key being adapted to enter the adjacent transverse key slot 43 in the draw bar to lend security to the attachment of the said members 32 and 33 to the draw-bar." By means of this stjfucture, a draw-bar having an upper and lateral shoulders may be formed upon the standard draw bar structure.
I claim:
1. iiig through the lower opening in the head a carry iron, the draft yoke having a hollow head opening from below, said head being provided with inturned vertical shoulders, the draw-bar having lateral vertical shoulders to engage the shoulders of the yoke, the carry iron holding the draw-bar against downward displacement through the lower pening in'the yoke head.
3. In a draft rigging for railway cars in combination. a draft yoke and a draw-bar, the draft yoke having a hollow head with a lower opening to receive the draw-bar, the yoke having shoulders. the draw-bar having interengaging shoulders therefor, the said dra w-ba 1' being provided with means, mounted independently of the yoke, to prevent downward displacement of the draw-bar in reference .to the yoke.
4. In a draft rigging for railway cars in combination, a draft yoke, a draw-bar. and
a carry iron, the draft yoke having a hollow head provided with lateral inturned shoulders and an upper inturned shoulder the draw-bar hav'ing lateral vertical shoulders and an upper transverse shoulder to engage the shoulders of the yoke, the head having an opening underneath for the passage of the draw-bar in assembling and disassembling the draw-bar and yoke, the, carry iron I being mounted closely adjacent therear of the draw-bar shank to hold the draw-bar within the yoke head.
