WAGON END-GATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 20, 1917.
Application filed December 7, 1915. Serial No. 65,556.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, TWILLIAM Bai-Infinita, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tolna, in the county of Nelson and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Wagon End- Gates; and l. do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is to improve the construction of a wagon end gate so as to permit of the same being eX- peditiously moved from or replaced in position upon the wagon body.
A further object of the invention is to provide a new and novel type of locking device, which is adapted particularly to be associated with wagon end gates, but may be positioned on a door.I and of such construction that it will reinforce the gate or door, upon which it is positioned, and admit of the same being securely locked in closed position. v
Another object of the invention is the provision of locking means for carrying out the above objects which will be of simple construction, can be cheaply manufactured, will be durable and efficient in operation.
@ther objects will appear and be better understood from the embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a rear view of the wagon end gate, showing the same in closed position,
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the end gate and showing the locking means therefor in opened position,
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through the locking device,
Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 1 -4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view, taken through the outer side of the frame, and showing a clip for holding the operating lever, when the lever is moved to operative position.
Referring to the drawings more particularly, the letter A designates the platform or wagon body, B the opposite sides of the body, each side having its inner surface provided at the rear end thereof with a pair of `vertically disposed spacedstrips 1 and 2,
each pair of strips forming guides for the reception of the opposite ends of the end' gate of the wagon. The wagon end gate, designated C is provided adjacent one end with an upper and lower pair of spaced elongated slots 3 and 4, and the said end of the end gate' has slidably positioned thereon a rectangular shaped metallic casing 5 which receives the said end gate and is slidably secured thereto by means ,of bolts 7 and 8, which extend through the sides of the casing and through the slots 3 and 4 in the end gate and have their Shanks threaded for the reception of nuts 9. The end gate proper is of a length less than the width of the wagon body and when the end gate is positioned on the wagon body. that end thereof opposite the one upon which the casing is mounted, is fitted between the vertical uprights 1 and 2 of the adjacent side of the wagon body, and the casing on the opposite end of the end gate is moved between the uprights 1 and 2 on the other side of the wagon body, so as to hold'the end gate in position.
The casing 5 is moved to operative or inoperative position by means of a rod 10 and lever 11. The rod 10 has one end connected to the outer side of the casing and its opposite end connected to the lever 11, adjacent one end thereof, by means of the pivot pin 12. The lever 11 has the end adjacent the pivotal connection 12 for the rod 10 pivoted to a plate 13 mounted intermediate the ends of the end gate C, andthe opposite end of the lever 11 is free. When the lever 11 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 2, the casing 5 is moved to inoperative position, and when the lever 11 is moved to the position shown in Fig. 1, the casing 5 is moved between the uprights 1 and 2 on the adjacent side of the wagon body, and locks the end gate to the wagon body.
A U-shaped spring clip 1d, is carried by the outer side of the casing 5 and is adapted to receive the free end of the lever 11 when the latter is in the position shown in Fig. 1 and holds the lever in said position.
A U-shaped handle 15 is associated with the casing 5 and is secured thereto by passing certain of the bolts 7 and 8 through eyes i on the opposite ends of the sides of the handle. The handle admits of the gate being lifted, sufciently, to allow the operator inserting one hand beneath the lower edge iio oi the gate, so that the gate can be lifted upwardly when it is desired to remove the gate from the wagon.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new is:
l. An end gate comprising a relatively stationary and a relatively movable member, the latter member being of hollow rectangular format-ion and slidably mounted upon one end of the stationarymember, a lever pivoted at one end upon said stationary member, a rod pivoted at one end to the movable member and at itsopposite end to the said lever near the pivot of the latter, and a hook carried by the movable member' lor the reception of the free end of the lever when the latter is swung to move the movable member outwardly on the stationary member.v
2. An end gate comprising a relatively stationary and a relatively movable member,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each,
the said stationary member having slots therein, said movable member being of hollow rectangular formation and slidably mounted upon one end of the stationary member, bolts extending through the sides oi' the movable member and received by the slots in the stationary member, a handle secured to certain of the bolts, a lever pivoted at one end to the stationary member and at its opposite end to the movable member, a hook carried by the latter member for the reception of the free end of the lever when' the lever is swung to move said movable member on the stationary member.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.l
