PACKAGE SEALER AND .FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, HENRY O. MARs'roN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Goshen, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Package Sealer and Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to package ties, and more particularly to a combined sealer and fastener which can be used with or without a tie string for securing a package or a bundle of papers or other articles.
The invention has for its general objects to provide a comparatively sim le and inexpensive sealing and fastening device which is reliable and eflicient'in use, easy and convenient to apply, and so designed that a tie string can be easily and quickly secured to the device whenever a tie string is required.
A. more specific object of the invention is the provision of a fastening device in the form of a paper, linen or equivalent piece which is gummed on one side so that it can be stuck to a wrapper or package, either as a seal therefor, or to attach the device to the package so that a tie string can be attached to the device for enabling the package to be secured by the string, there being on the gummed piece a button with which the tie string is engaged.
With such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description pro ceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particularity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views,
Figure l is a perspective view of the device applied to a wrapped article and to which a tie string is secured;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the device in use simply as a seal;
Fig. 3 is a top view of the combined sealer and fastener 7 line 5-5, Fig. 3. r
The sealing and fastening device com:
Specification of Letters Patent.

prises'a piece of paper, linen or equivalent material 1 which has gumapplied to one side, so that by moistening the gum the piece 1 can be caused to adhere to an article, wrapper, envelop or the like. The piece 1 is provided with a disk 3 secured by an eyelet or equivalent fastener 4 which passes through the piece 1 and also through a reinforcing washer 5 on the under side. The disk 3 forms a button for permitting a string to be engaged therewith.
The device .may be used as shown in Fig. l, where the gummed piece 1 is stuck on the wrapper B of the package, so that the device simply serves as a fastener. One end of a tie string O is engaged under the button 3 and wound around one or more times, and then the tie string is passed around the wrapped package transversely and longitudinally, as indicated by the full and dotted lines the free end of the tie string being also engaged around the button 8. In Fig. 2 the devlce is shown in use as a sealer for preventing the wrapper or envelop from being opened without that fact being revealed, since the device strongly adheres to the wrapper and cannot be removed without the wrapper being torn. Obviously, a variety of uses will be suggested for the combined sealer and fastener.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have de-' scribed the principle of operation, together with the article which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the article shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A deviceof the class described comprising a piece of pliable material which is plain on one side to receive writing and which is gummed on the opposite side, a button disposed on the plain side of the said piece, a washer disposed on the gummed side, and a rivet passing through the button, piece and washer, said washer being located inwardly from one edge of the piece, whereby a gummed area will entirely surround the ing through the said piece, and a Washer on Washer. the gummed side of the piece and through 2. A device of the class described comwhich the rivet extends, said Washer being 10 prising a piece of pliable material gummed located inwardly from the margin of the 5 on one side and plain on the opposite side, said piece, whereby a gummed surface exand means for attaching a tie string to the tends entirely around the Washer. said piece, said means including a rivet pass- HENRY COLBY MARSTON.
