To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1. JOHN JAcon Kixznn, a citizenof the lfnited States, and resident of 'ildwood, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pemisylvania, have ii'ivented a. new and useful 'lnqn'ovement in Brake Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be'a full, clear, and exact description thereof. My invention relates to brake-shoes and has special reference. to such class of shoes which are known as filled shoes, and formed of separate backs having a filling such as a body of frictional material for engagement with a wheel in braking. Herctof'ore in the manufzuzture and use of this class of brake-shoes it was difficult to get an inclosing, casing that would support the heavy bra'ke pressures and also resist fracture from expansion and contraction caused by the frequent exposures to heat and cold when the brakes were applied and released. Another difliculty was on account of the body being cast to the. back or casing in some cases, in which where it was desired to use such back again,it would require a great deal of labor to remove same without injuring such back and rendering the same useless.
The object of my invention to overcome these difficulties or objections and provide a cheap, simple and eflicient form of a brakeshoe which can be easily and quickly manufactured, assembled and taken apart, is so constructed that the body of the same will permit of the back being used again after the body is worn down, and will enable expansion and contraction in the shoe to the extent desired.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and' combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved brake-shoe, I will describe the same more fully referring to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved brake-shoe;

Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawing. As illustrated in the drawing A represents my improved brake-shoe, which comprises the back member 1, the body'or wheel enga ing member 2, and the lug member 3, which is adapted to connect the shoe to the ordinary approved brake-head or hanger (not shown).
The body member '2 is forn' ed of a plurality of intermediate and end inclosing sections or blocks '4 and 5 respectively, which are formed of a material, such as cast iron or fiber, with the sections 4 being of I-beain shape and thus providing the end flanges (3 and the connecting webs 7 between thesame. The flanges 6 form the side walls of such body member 1 and with such webs 7mtending across and between such flanges will. form the channel portions or recesses 8 in the sections or blocks 4 for inclosing and supporting the fillers 9, which are formed of a composition of material, well known in the .art, and which is inserted in such recesses,
as hereinafter described. The side edges of the flanges (3 and the sides of the webs 7 are curved, on the same plane, as at 10 and 10, respectively, and are also tapered outward from the back member 1 and toward each other at their outer or front ends or faces, in order to form interlocking wedge-shaped faces when in position in the. shoe and in supporting the fillers f), such edges of said flanges bearing against each other in the finished shoe.
The end inclosing sections or blocks 5 are formed of a. material, such as cast iron or fiber and are preferably solid and provided with seats 12 in the outer end walls 11 of the same, while. the inner or oppcsitc walls 13 of said blocks are curved ani tapered to conform with the side edges on the flanges 6 in forming the end recesses 8 for the fillers 9. i
The back member 1 is formed of semi-y elastic or ductile metal, such as steel, and is provided with the back wall or strip 11 which is adapted to fit within seats 11' formed in the back of the webs 7 and end blocks 5. The back wall 11 has its ends formed with the usual short bear ing surfaces 15, which are provided with the recesses 16 in the same and they, are adapted to bear or abut against bearings on the ends of the brake-head or hanger. The brake-head 0r hanger is also provided with the usual central or intermediate bearingswhich are adapted to abut against the back wall 14 on the back member 1 and on each side of thelug3 connected to such wall as hereinafter described. I Y which extend down along the end walls 11 on the end blocks 5, and the ends 18 of such portions are turned in, so-asto fit within the seats 12 in the end blocks 5 when the back member is attached to the body member 2 formed by the sections or blocks 4 and 5 and tillers 9 for clamping these parts in place, while such hookedportions will fitagainst the end walls 11 on' such blocks The supporting lug 3 can be connected to the. shoe A in any suitable manner, but as shown, isseparate from the back memberand attached thereto. In such case the lug 3 is formedof metal, such as steel, and is provided with the supporting standards or legs 19, which are adapted to .be passed through slots 20 in the back wall 14, so that the ends 21 on such legscan be bent under such wall in order to fit within seats 22 and 22'-forincd in the fillers 9 and in the'webs.7

The inclosing sections or blocks '1 and 5, which are formed to theshape desired, are then placed on the back'mcmbcr 1. so that the wall 14 of such member will rest within the seats 14- in such blocks, and the ends- 21 on the lugs 3 will fitwithin the seats 22' in the webs 7, while the ends lSonthe ho (cd portions 17 will fit within the. seats in the blocks 5. that the spaces or openings previously formed between the edges 10 on the flanges 6 of said blocks will close and such edges bear against each other, while the material forming such fillers, being yielding, will further pack such fillers, and the end walls 11 on the blocks 5 will be drawn more tightly against the braked portions 17-011 saidback member, thereby clamping such blocks and fillers in said back member firmly and securely in place between the walls H and 17 on said back.
When it is desired to remove the blocks 4 j and and fillers 9 from the back member 1,

' the shoe A can be suitably supported and suitable pressure applied to the convex side of the same, which will therebv flatten out the same and free the blocks 4 and 5 from each other and from the fillers 9, so that such sections or blocks and fillers can be easily and quickly removed from the back member.
If desired, the back wall. 14 on the back member'l can be provided with-a side lip or flange 23 for fitting down over the flanges 6 on the blocks 1 and over the blocks 5, as shown in Fig. 6, which will further assist in holding said blocks and fillers 9 in place within said back member 1, while it desired, such fillers can be previously formed to the shape and ready for insertion in the recesses in such blocks, and the fillingmaterial may also be used in a' plastic-state. The blocks 4 and 5'can be further interlocked by forming a, rib 24011 one of the side edges 10 on their flanges 6 for fitting within a like shaiped recess 25 on the oppo the adjacent flange, and

Various other modifications; and changes in the design and construction of my improved brake-shoe may be resorted to, Without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
.It will be (L ions that" all the parts of my improved brake-shoe can be easily and quickly manufactured, assembled and taken apart, and the body member being capable of being readily remm'ed by taking out the sections or blocks composing the same, will enable'the .back member to be used over again for a number of times, thereby saving a great cost in the manufacture of these shoes. The shoe will also permit of expansion and contraction either when used in braking or idle, and will thereby overcome liability to breakage or fracture, and working or twisting out of curvature, and thus allow for a full contact bearing on the Wheel at all times. The shoe so designed will give a higher efficiency in retarding the class of heavy high speed trains, than the ordinary class of these brake-shoes, and will enable material to be used which is best suited for braking on the wheel and which heretofore has been prevented from being used by reason of liability to fracture and other causes.
It will also be obvious that the removal of the body sections or blocks can be obtained Without injury, fracturing or breakin su dh back member will bein absolutely good condition for instant use, and While the shoe has all the advantages of lightness and capability of use on high speed trains, and especially on heavy steel cars with high brake pressure, it will be strong and durable, and Willbe able to withstand the ordinary and hard knocks and usage by reason of the clamping of the parts in place.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- I. A. brake-shoe comprising a supporting member, a body member for engaging the Wheel and formed of a plurality of inclosing sections or blocks having a filling of frictional material within the same, and means for locking said blocks.
2. A brake-shoe comprising a supporting member, a body member for engaging the wheel and formed of a'plurality of inclosing sections or blocks having a filling of frictional material within the same, and means on said blocks for locking the same.
3. A. brake-shoe comprising a supporting member, a body member for engaging the wheel and formed of a plurality of inclos ing sections or blocks having a filling of frictional material within the same, said blocks having flange portions for forming the sides of said body member, and means on said flange portions for locking said blocks.
4. A brake-shoe comprising a supporting such back member employed, so that G member, a body member engaging the wheel and formed of a plurality of inclosing sectIOIlSOl' blocks having a filling of frictional material within the same, said blocks having flange portions for forming the sides wheel and formed of fa plurality of inclosing sections or blocks ,having a filling of,

A brake-shoe comprising a supporting member, a'body member for engaging the wheel and formed of a plurality of inclosirg sections or blocks having a filling of frictional material within the same, and curved tapering flanges at each end of said blocksfor bearing against each other to lock said blocks, said flanges having a lip at one side and a recess at the other side for receiving the lip of the flange of the adjacent block.

A brake-shoe comprising a supporting member, a body member for engaging the wheel forn'led of a plurality of inelosing sections or blocks provided with flange portions for forming the sides of said body' member, a wall between the said flange portions, fillings of frictional material between said portions and walls, and means for locking said blocks.

A brake-shoe comprising a supporting member, a body member for engaging the wheel formed of a plurality of inclosing sections or blocks provided with flange bearing portions for forming the sides of said body member, walls between said flange portions, fillings of frictional material between said ortions and walls, and said walls and the bearing faces on said flanged portions beingadapted to lock said blocks.
