Application filed August 1s, 1919, serial No.
To all whom z'mag/ concern.' Y
Be it known that I, WILLIAM citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new Vand useful Improvement in Brake- Shoes; and I ing to be a full, thereof.
Myinvention relates to ,brake-shoes, and has special reference'to the class of brakeshoes which are provided with an inclosed metallic casing around a filling or body of frictional material for engagement with a wheel in braking.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple and eflicient form of a brake-shoe, wherein the'ends or sides of such shoe will .not` cut` into or wear down the wheel on which it is used, andone in which such ends or sides will wear down evenly and uniformly with the filling of frictional material.
A still further object of the invention is clear, and exact description to keep the metal of the cap of the shoefrom `engaging the wheel when in use, so that-when the shoe is worn down to such metal very little is left of they shoe and it then can be scrapped.v V v u To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and vparticularly pointed out in the claims. l
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved brake-shoe, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a plan or back view of a brake-` shoe embodying my invention;
Fig. 2' is a side elevation, partly in section, of the same;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the shoe on the line 3 3 Fig. l;
Fig. e is a bottom plan viewof the shoe; Fig. 5- is a like view showing another form of the invention; Y
Fig. 6V is a cross-section of the shoe on the line VI-VI Fig. 2'; and Fig. 7 is an end view of the form of shoe shown in Fig. 4.
p Specification' of. Letters Patent.
do ,hereby declare the followy supporting member ,f head or hanger (not shown) Patented Aug. 10, 1920.
. f y like parts in each ofthe figures of the sheet GIBSON, a a
of drawings.
As illustrated in the figures of the drawings, my improved brake-shoe is shown at a and has the usual shape or curvature, such shoe being provided with an inclosmg cap or l and a frictional filling orv body member2 of frictional material A inserted in said cap in any suitable manner. This filling' member 2 is adapted to engage with the wheel and the rubbing or frictional action of the brakeshoe upon the wheel is exertedby such frictional member, which consists of any suitable material, such as cast iron or composition of matter or other material secured within the cap l to exert proper and sufficient friction upon the periphery of the wheel without the imposition of undue or excessive wear thereon and the loss of V`wheel metalconsequent thereto, and such compositions are of a character familiar to those skilled in the art.
The cap lis formed from any suitable'material, preferably from band, sheet, plate or other metalhaving a substantial degree of strength and durability, such as malleable, wrought or other steel or iron, and when formed from sheet or plate metal it is pressed or bent by suitable dies into a structure having an integral back wall 3, side lips 4 and end lips 5, as well as being open at the front for the insertion of the filling member 2 and curvedsubstantially in acL cordance with the periphery of the car wheel on which the brake-shoe is to be used. The side lips 4; and end lips 5 provide the deep corners 4l on the casing l between such end and side lips'to assist in supporting the filling' member 2 and the plates hereinafter described.
The usualsupporting lug v6 is connected or .fixed to the back 3 of the cap l in any suitable manner for` connecting the shoea to the Master Car Builders standard brakeand is preferably separatethercfrom, as shown, by having .the kinner ends S passed throughy slots v8 in said back and turned against the i11- f side lips/l. on the cap 1, so that theirexj terior surfaces are flush with the vexterior surfaces oflsaid lips, therebystrictly conforminginfshape and size to the Master,
' allovv` such vflush surfaces to be I Vthe plates are provided With a turned or bent Verably recessed, as at 7. VCentral or inter-l mediate bearings on the head or hanger are adapted to abut against said back Wall?) of the capY l andon each side of tlie lug G.
In the formation of the' brake-shoe a,'
after the metallic capi is formed, with the.v
lug 6 connected to the back S-inany suitable manner vor as described, thenr the plates 9 areinserted Within the 'cap and then'the materialcomposing the filling member 2-*is in-p serted in such cap. These plates 9 as shownv in FigsA l, 2, 3rd', 6 .andV 7 arev formedof tivoL-shaped pieces and when placed Within the'rcap lv and-against the llingr-membei 2 lWillformthe end and nside Walls of tlijeQlin-j Yished shoe a by theshort-portions 9-thereonY abutting the 'long portions 9.Y thereonand.
f. such form oi brake-shoe will preventr any possibility of the injury to Yor uneven wearing. of the Wheel throat and tread and will also enable Y the lling,`ends andsides of ,the shoe to Wear down evenly, uniformly and together, while f shoe will also avoid any excessive Wearon the Wheel by the ends and sideslof the shoe and enable a strong and I.
durable inclosure to be formed'for the illing material. .z i..
-lt WillV also be seen that 'in the use ofl my improved brake-shoe, th'emetalof thev Vcap vwill* be'v kept fromv engaging'Vith-'the Y .vhe'ehrsothat the shoe caribe used until, it
Vto .such metal, thereby enabling roi'il'yp'a `small" portionofsuch shoe to thus assist with such'cap in holding thema-- they canbe formed of different thicknesses,
and if .desired,of the same thickness Vas the Y it caribe scrapped Without Vmaterial composing remain after being used to thelimitgsothat great 'loss inthe en ds and sides ofthe filling member will also be? protected by' the side andv endfpo-rtions l 1 i on the plates-'and such plates will assisttne cap -in holding 4the filling member in place.
Car Builders7 standards. .ln'order vto hold such'plates 9 against thelips l and and portion l0 at their inner or upper edges obtained,
which formsseats l1V for the reception of the lower or outer end edges. of said lips.
lf desired, the plates 9v can be formed of Ulshaped pieces, as shown inFig. 5, in .which against eachother when in place in'`v the shoe, While various other modifications and` changes in the designand construction `of my improved brake-shoe. may. be resorted! to, Without departing from the spirit of the inventionor `sacrificing' any of its ativan- 'Y tages.'
In the-use of the term soft in the above specification and. in the claims it will be understood that `the ,material used for the pieces composing the. integral side and end Walls of the brake-shoe, will be flexible and. resilient, and is vof suchr anature as to-be Worn away itself. 'by friction rather than.
