To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, dorm dacon Krnznn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vfildwood. in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brake- Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My i vention relates to brake-shoes, and relates especially to that class of brake-shoes which are known as composition filled shoes.
Heretofore, in this class of brake-shoes, it was difficult in manufacturing the same to procure an inclosing c: sing for the shoe which would support the heavy brake pressures and thereby resist fracture due to the expansion and contraction caused by the frequent exposures to heat and-cold when the brakes are applied and released. In cases where the wheel engaging body was cast to the back or casing, it was difficult to use such casing over again, as it would require a great deal of labor to remove such body without injuring the back and thereby rendering the same useless.
My invention has for its object to overcome these difficulties and provide a cheap,
4 simple and eliicient form of a brake-shoe,
which is provided with a specially con structed back and body or wheel engaging member, which will enable such back to be used again after the body member is worn down, as well as one which can be manufactured easily and quickly, can be readily assembled and taken apart for the purposes intended, and will permit of expansion and contraction to the extent desired.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, inthe novel arrangement, construction'and combination of parts. as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

As illustrated in the drawing A represents my improved brake-shoe which is composed of the supporting or back member 1, the body or wheel bearing member 2 and the lug member 3, which connects the shoes in the usual manner to the ordinary approved brake-head or hanger.
The body or wheel bearing member'Q is formed of intermediate and end inclosing blocks or portions, 4- and 4: respectively, which are formed of a material such as cast iron or fiber, and such portions 4 are of I beam shape, which enables the end flanges 5 on the SillllQlZO form the sides of the body member and the web portion 6 to form the partition or central. wall, and such flanges and web forming channels or recesses 5 for inclosing and supporting the fillers 7 formed of a. composition of frictional material such as is well known in the art. This filler portion 7 is placed within such inclosing. blocks or portions l and 4 and between such flanges 5 and webs 6 when the blocks 4 and 4; are in place, as hereinafter described, and preferably of such a composition which will be yielding when the blocks 4 are in place. Rounded portions 8 conforming to the rounded portions 8 on the blocks 4, are formed on the fillers 7 The flanges 5 are tapered outwardly from the back member 1, so that when the inclosing portions 4 are assembled in the shoe A the edges 5 of the flanges 5 will bear against each other, as hereinafter described. The end inclosing portions 4 are of U-shape and their webs 6 and the flanges 5 are tapered in like manner as the flanges 5 on the portions 4, and pro vided with the rounded portions 8 while such webs form the end walls of the body member 2, when the shoe A is assembled, and such flanges form with the flanges 5 on the portions 4, the sides of the body member 2. The end filler portions 7 are of the same shape as the intermediate ones and are sup ported by the end webs 6 on the end portions a and the webs 6 on the adjacent inclosing portion 4.
The rear of the inclosing portions 4- is provided with slots 9 which are formed in the webs 6 of such portions which are adapted to support the back member 1 by the back wall or strip 1 of the back member 1 filling in said seats, and such back is formed of metal so as to be ductile and semielastic, such as steel. The usual short bearing surfaces 10 having recesses 10 are formed at the ends of such back member and they are adapted to abut against bearings on the ends of the brake-head or hanger. The usual central or intermediate bearings on said head or hanger are adapted to abut against such back member and on each side of the lug 3. The back member 1 is also provide with the end Walls or hook portions 1, which are turned in from the back wall or strip 1 and bear against the end walls on the end inclosing portions l which are formed with webs (3 on said portions, and such end Walls and back wall act to hold the inclosing portions 4 and d and fillers 7 in place in the shoe A when formed.
The supporting lug 3 can be connected to the shoe A in any suitable manner, and is shown as formed of metal, such as steel, and is preferably separate from the back wall 1. This lug 3 is attached to the back wall 1 0f the back member 1 by having its supporting legs or standards 3 passed through slots 2 in the wall 1, and the ends 3 of such legs are bent under such wall to fit within seats 4 formed in the fillers 7 and rest on the webs 6 of the blocks4.
When my improved brake-shoe A is being formed, the back member 1 is cut to the shape and size required, which forms the back wall 1, after which it is pressed or stamped to shape to form the bearing surfaces 10 and end walls 1. The back wall 1 is also punched to form the slots 2 in the same, and the legs 3 of the lug 3 are placed through the back wall through said slots,
after which such legs are bent under said wall to form the bent ends 3". The inclosing portions 4 and 4: which are formed to the shape desired, can now be placed on such back member 1 with the portions 4- resting against the end walls 1", and the filling material for forming the fillers 7 can then be placed in the opening formed by the recesses 5 between the flanges 5 and webs 6 of the blocks 4, and by reason of the tapered flanges, tapered spaces will be formed between the same. While the back 1 and blocks 4: are suitably supported, suitable pressure can now be applied to such filling material to pack the same within the open ings 5 formed between the flanges 5 and a ts 6 on the portions 4 and 4t and around the bent ends 8, thereby formingthe fillers 7 and the seats 4 in the same for said ends. tjuitable pressure can now be applied to the inner or front end edges on the flanges 5 of such inclosing portions 4 and 4: and the inner or front ends of such fillers 7, and while such portions and blocks are securely held in dies or any other suitable means, which will bend such back member 1 and form the completed shoe A by giving such back, inclosing portions and blocks the proper curvature for the body member 2 to conform to the wheel. The inclosing portions 4 and 1- and fillers 7 when the back 1 is so curved, will be pressed tightly together, so that the side edges 5 on the said portions will bear against each other and close the openings or spaces between the same, while the material forming the fillers being yielding will thus further pack itself, so that the end walls l will be drawn more tightly against the portions 4, thereby holding such portions and fillers firmly in place in such back and between the wall 1 and end walls 1".
In order to remove the sections 4: and fillers 7 after they are worn down, the shoe A can be supported in any suitable manner, so that pressure can be applied to the convex side of the back 1, which will thereby flatten out such shoe, open up the sections land 4.1 and free the same and the fillers 8 from each other so that such sections and fillers can be easily and quickly moved from the back.
As shown in Fig. 7, the back wall or strip 1 of the back member 1, can be provided with a side lip or flange 10 for fitting down over the flanges 5 in the section or blocks 4m. to assist in holding said blocks in place and within such member, while the fillers 7 can be previously formed to the shape desired, and various other modifications and changes inthe design and construction of my improved brake-shoe may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention, or sacrificing any of its advantages.
It will be seen that in the manufacture and use of my improved brake-shoe, the back member will be left in absolutelv good condition for being used over again a num ber of vtimes with new bodv members, after the worn down blocks and fillers comprising such body members are removed. from the same, thereby enabling a great cost savinL' in the manufacture and use of these shoes, and the removal of such blocks and fillers can be obtained without injury or fracture to such back member.
It will also be seen that the parts of my improved brakeshoe can be easily and quickly made, as well as assembled or taken apart, while such shoe will be strong and durable, and will be able to withstand the ordinary knocks or blows by means of the clamping of the parts in place. The shoe has all the advantages of lightness and capability for use on high speed trains and especially on steel cars and high brake pressure and will be able to prevent breaking from heat and cold when in use or idle by reason of the expansion and contraction contained in the same. he shoe will also be able to withstand the frictional heat due to the braking on the wheel, so that it will not become warped or twisted out of its curvature, thereby enabling it to have a full contact bearing on the wheel at all tin'ies and thus giving a higher efficiency in retarding the class of heavy and high speed trains, while at the same time it enables material to be used, which is best suited for braking on the wheel and which formerly was barred from use by reason of liability to fracture, wear and other causes.
What I claim as my intention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. A brake-shoe comprising a supporting member, a body member formed of a plurality of inclosing sections or blocks, and fillers of frictional material in said blocks.

5. A brake-shoe comprising a supporting member, and a body member formed of a plurality of inclosing sections or blocks, said sections being provided with flange portions for forming the sides of said body member, and fillers of frictional material within said blocks.

A brake-shoe comprising a supporting member, a body member formed of a plurality of inclosing sections or blocks, said sections being provided with flanged portions for forming the sides of said body member and such portions having their edges inclined for fitting against each other, and a filling of frictional material within said blocks.
