To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN JAooB KINZER, a resident of Wildwood, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brake-Shoes; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to brake-shoes, and has special reference to the class of brakeshoes for railroad car and other like Wheels which. have an inclosing casing provided with a filling of frictional material therein.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple and efiicient form of brakeshoe of this class which can be firmly-held in engagement with the tread of the wheel when desired and along the entire face of the shoe, as well as be one in which the shoe will be greatly strengthened in order to prevent any buckling, turning or curving of the shoe when in use and thereby enable the same to hold its original shape.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of arts as hereinafter more specifically set orth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved brake-shoe, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompany drawing, in which Figure 1 is a back plan view of my improved brake-shoe. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the shoe on line 2-2 Fig. 1.

plate or other metal having a substantial degree of strength and ductility, such as malleable, wrought or other steel or iron, and when formed from refractory material, sheet or plate metal it is pressed or bent in suitable dies into a structure having an integral back-wall 3, side walls 4 and end walls 5, as well asbeing open at its front for the insertion of the filling materiala and curved substantially in accordance with the periphery of the car wheel on which the brake-shoe is to be used.
In the formation of the casing 2, as above described, the back 3 is bent or struck out where it connects with one of the sides 4 to form the raised flanged portion 6 on said casing and it is preferably rounded or curved from said back to said side. ends 5 of the casing 2 are each cut away, as at 7, in line with the raised portion 6 0n the back 3 in order to form an opening in the shoe 1 for the flange on the wheel, as hereinafter described, and such opening 7 preferably conforms to the shape of saidraised portion at its inner end by having such end rounded or curved as at 8, while its outer side conforms substantially to the side wall 4 adjacent to the same and its inner side substantially to the opposite side wall 4 and curved, as at 9, in its connection with the inner edge of the end Walls o.
The usual supportinglug 10 is connected or fixed to the back 3 of the casing 2 in any suitable manner, for connecting the shoe 1 to the ordinary ap roved shoe head or hanger (not shown), y having the innerends 12 on its legs ,11 passed through slots 3' in said back and turned against the in ner face of such back to connect such lug to said-casing. p
A short bearing surface 13 is formed on the back wall 3 of the casing 2 and adjoinin each of its ends which surfaces are ada te to abut against bearings on the ends 0 the brake-head or hanger, and such surfaces are preferably formed integral with such back y being bent or struck out of the back, while such surfaces are also preferably recessed as at 14. Central or intermediate bearing surfaces on the brake-head or hanger are adapted to abut against the back wall 3 on. the casing and on each side of the lug 10, as at 15, and a central bearing surface 15 is preferably formed integral with said back wall and bent or struck out from the same for fitting within said lug to sup ort and prevent said lug from bein sheare off by the thrust of the hanger 1n the frictional pull of the shoe.
The back wall 3 of the casing 2 is preferably provided with a series of corrugations 16, which extend across said wall and are preferably formed by the material of said back being bent or struck out, such corrugations extending between the bearing surfaces 13 and 15 and being preferably triangular in shape, as at 17. The raised flanged portion 6 on the backwall 3 of the casing 2 is also preferably corrugated across the same, as at 19, as Well as the adjacent and opposite side wall 4 of said casing, as at 20, and preferably formed in like manner as the corrugations 16 on said back wall.
The rubbing or frictional action of the brake shoe 1 upon the tread b of the wheel 6 is produced by the frictional member a, which consists of a filling of any suitable material, such as a composition of matter specially prepared for the purpose, and of such a character as toexert proper and sufficient friction upon the periphery c of said wheel without the imposition of undue or excessive pressure thereon, and compositions of this character are well known in the art. This filling a is either cast into the casing 2 or inserted in such casing under pressure and retained in position, after hardening, by the walls 3, 4 and 5, with portions of such material preferably entering the recesses 21 formed on the inner face of the back wall;3, raised portions 6 and side Walls 4-, by the corrugations 16, 19 and 20, respectively therein and by the bearing surfaces 13 and 15 in said back, while the side walls 4 and end walls 5 are preferably bent in by their corrugations and by bent portion, as at 5, respectively, to form a dovetailed connection with said filling material a in the casing 2. The material a is also recessed in any suitable manner along the same, seat 22 and in line with the ripening 7 and covered portion 8 in the end walls 5 which will form a hooked portion with the raised portion 6 in order to conform to and permit the flange d of the wheel I) to fit therein and hold the shoe in place in said wheel.
It will thus be seen vthat m improved brake-shoe will provide for a c ampin action between the same and the wheel ange which will act to hold said shoe in its proper osition on the wheels periphery and therey permit the whole force otthe friction member of the shoe to engage such periphery and enable the rounded or curve portion between the recess in the raised portion and face of the shoe to fit or engage the corner or connection between the wheel flange and tread of the wheel. It will also be seen that when my improved brake-shoe is in use the corrugations 1n the back, raised back portions and sides of the same will greatly stiflen and straighten the shoe, so as to prevent any buckling, turning or'curving out of the shoe at any point, which will not only add to the wearing qualities of the shoe but will greatl increase the braking power, while at t e same time very Loans is little, if anything, will be added to its cost of manufacture, and the holding power of the casing with the filling material greatly increased, while such corrugations in the casing will enable a lighter casing to be used than ordinarily and thereby greatly reduce the weight of the shoe and yet at the same time get better results by taking the dead 1. 9. A brake-shoe comprising an inclosing casing of pressed metal and a filling of frictional material, said casing and filling having hooked means atone side of the same for fitting over the flange of the Wheel, and angular corrugations on the back of said "casing and extending across the same.

A brake-shoe comprising an inclosing casing of pressed metal and a filling of frictional material, said casing and fil ng having a raised portion at one side ofthe same to form hooked means over the flange of the .over the flange of the Wheel and formed by a raised portion on the back of said casing and a recessed portion in said filling, and angular corrugations on the back of said casing and extending across the same.
12. Abrake-shoe comprising an inclosing casing of pressed metal and a filling of frictional material, said casing havinga hooked portion at one side of the same for fitting over the flange of the Wheel by a raised portion on the back of said casing and a recessed portion in said filling, a curved portion on the end of said casing and filling material and connecting with said recessed portion to conform to the shape of the Wheel between its flange and tread, and angular corrugations on the back of said casing and exten ing across the same.
