Application filed November 3, 1915. Serial No. 59,478.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, Fnnonion `W. CASE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Larwill, lin the county of WThitley, State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Mold; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved mold, designed primarily for forming curved concrete blocks or the like for cylindrical silos or the like.
lt has been found through a considerable experience that the overlapping curved ends i3 and 4 of the side pieces Of the mold disclosed in the patent to F. XV. Case and lV. A. Burnworth, dated August 11, 1914, Patent No. 1,106,625, are invariably springing apart or separated, when tamping the concrete in theJ mold. Therefore, one of the objects of the present invention is to entirely eliminate said overlapping curved ends 3 and 4 of said patent, and to eliminate the curved niece 5 of said patent, ,and to otherwise` construct the present mold in an improved manner over the mold in said patent, so as to construct or mold a superior and firmer concrete silo block, andone which has more accurate lines of contour.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for clamping the 0pposite sides of the mold securely together.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sheet metal lining for the interio r surfaces of the mold.
in practical elds the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.

Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the opposite sides, and 3 and 4 designate the opposite ends of the mold. The inner vertical surface of the end 3 is provided with an elongated rib 5, arched or curved in cross section, but which may be any other suitable shape if desired. The end piece 4 upon its inner face has a vertical longitudinal groove 6, which is designed to correspond with the rib 5, it depending upon what shape the rib 5 is in cross section. The rib 5 and the groove 6 forms a rib on one end of the block and a groove on the other end of the block, so that when a series of blocks are arranged to form the wall of the silo, the groove on one end of each block receives a rib upon the opposite end of an adjacent block, thereby connecting the blocks to prevent their displacement. The end pieces 3 and 4 are hinged at 7 `to the outer side piece 1, so that the -end pieces will swing outwardly. The leaves 8 of the hinges 7 extend beyond the end pieces 3 and 4, and terminate in reduced extensions 9, to which the cani members 10 are pivoted as at 11, which cam members 10 are provided with levers 12. Bolted to the inner side piece 2 of the mold as at 13 are curved bars 14, the opposite ends of which yare forked or bifurcated, as shown at 15. The outer faces of the forks of said bars 14 at the eXtreme ends of said forks, are provided with bulges 16. `When the sides 1 and 2 and the end pieces 3 and 4 are arranged as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the reduced extensions 9 of the leaves 8 are received between the forks 15 of the bars 14. To permit the forks 15 to receive said reduced extensions 9, the levers 12 are disposed as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, so that the' shorter radii, as indicated at a and of the cam members will pass over and adjacent the bulges 16 of said forks, and then after arranging the parts as disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2, the levers 15 may be thrown to the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thereby causing the surfaces 18 (which are adjacent the longer radii of the cani members) of the cams to cam against and behind the bulges 16 of the forks, thereby holding the sides 1 and 2 and the end pieces 3 and 4 firmly together, in order to receive the concrete or other plastic material, whereby the con;
crete siloV block may be formed. Secured to the end pieces 3 and l as at 2O are the plates or bars 21, the opposite ends of which overlap the opposite edges of the side pieces l and 2, thereby reinforcing or bracing the structure of the mold. The inner faces of the sides l and 2 are covered with sheet metal or any other suitable material 22, so as to construct smooth inner and outer faces upon the concrete silo block. The inner faces of the end pieces 3 and Ll: are provided with sheet metal face plates 23 to form smooth faces upon the ends of the silo block. In constructing the concrete silo block, the parts of the mold are arranged as disclosed in Figs. l, 2 and 3, the parts being clamped together securely7 after which the concrete or other plastic material is deposited in the mold, afterward tamped thoroughly and firmly into the mold, and afterward the mold may be immediately disassembled, and then set up in another location and refilled, and so on until a wall is completed. However', the concrete may be placed in the mold and allowed to stand for a short period to permit the same to partially set, or allowed to stand for a longer period to permit the con crete to thoroughly set, after which the parts of the mold may be disassembled.
One of the side pieces of the mold, that is, the one which is convened inwardly, may be removed7 by imparting a slight outward movement to one of said end pieces, when thc cams 10 are in the positionsshown in Fig. 3, disconnecting the forks from the elongated leaves of the hinges, at one end of said side piece, then by imparting a slight reverse transverse movement to said side piece, the forks at the other end of the side piece may be disconnected. with the end edges of said side pieces, hinges i carried by the first side piece, each having an elongated hinge leaf extending across the end edges of the side pieces and secured to the outer face of an end piece, whereby each end piece may swing outwardly and toward the outer face of the rst side piece, whereby the molded block may be easily removed, bars secured to the outer faces of the end pieces and having their ends overlying the end edges of said side pieces, curved barsk secured to the outer face of the second side piece and having forked ends extending beyond the end edges of the second side piece to be engaged by the elongated leaves of the hinges7 said forks having bulges, and cam members carried by said elongated hinge leaves to coperate with the bulges, to
bind the parts of themold together in two directions at right angles to each other.
