separate, leaving thedivision plates in po-' sit-ionin the blocks. The division plates can then be readily lifted out and the blocks removed I 4 In order to provide the blocks with'atransverse opening the divi'sionplates 14 and the .end plates are provided with central openings 19 WlHCh are -1n-al1nement when the said plates are in position in the mold, these alined openings per itting a core to be run therethlrough whereby .to' form such transverse openmgs 1n the finished blocks. These openings are of a horizontal dimension substantially twice that of theribs 11 and 12 of the side members so' that the opening extending through the block is' substantially the same as the opening formed by two adjacent grooves when the blocks are set in place in a wall. The core preferably used by. me for the forming of these transverse optnings forms the subject matter of a 'di-' visional application and comprises t p and bottor'n plates 20 and 21, the. top. 51. e having downwardly turned flanges 22 and the lower plate upwardly turned"flanges 23,
which, in the collapsed condition of the core are spaced apart a slight distance. The top and bottom plates ane substantially duplicates one of the other and each of them has formed on its inner sides the transversely extending braces 24 which are longitudinally conca've. Extending from the same end of the plates 20 and 21 are bars 25 and 26 and at the ends of these bars are fulcrumed levers 27 and 28. Pivotally connected to the levers are wedge members 29 and 30 which extend longitudinally of the core with their narrowest portion lying within the space between the opposed flanges of the top and in the interspace between the top and botbottom plates, Throughout the length of the core these wedge members are connected one' to another and to the braces 24 by toggle levers 31 whereby as the levers 27 and 28 are operated the wedge members vare thrown from a position with their thin edges lying tom plates to a positionfarther within said interspac e, thus forcing the top and bottom plates apart to expand the core in a vertical direction and also expandingthe same horizontally. This core is arranged to fit loosely within the/openings.19 of the division and end plates. lVhen the mold is ready .to receive the concrete, thecore is placed longitudinally thereof 'in its' collapsed position and then Ev the levers 27 and 28 is expanded so as to e confined tightly within the division plates. The concrete is then filled in as before described and closely surrounding the core. After the cement is set the core is coilapsed by the operation of the levers 27 and 28 and the core may be then readily withdrawn and the division plates left free to be withdrawn in turn.
Instead of mounting the side members of the-mold upon the sl de members having a rack and pinion operation, the side members 9 and 10 may also be carried by the hinged side plates as shown in F ig; 7 the mounting 'being by means of square shafts'32 nonrotatably aflixed in the hinge members 33, the said shafts being provided at ne place with a cylindrical portion 34: rotat bly mountedin the hinge members 35 so that'the rotation oi, the shafts 32by the levers 36- serves to s ing the side members into open or closed position; otherwise the censtruction'and operation is' the same..,
Having thus described this invention what is claimed is:
1. In a concrete mold, a base, side members mounted to move transversely thereof, said side members having on their inner opposed faces a longitudinal rib, a shaft. extending longitudinally of the mold, pinions thereon, apd'grack membersconnected to the side members and meshing with the pinions.
2. .A mold of the character described, including a base, side members movable transversely ofthe base toward and away from each other, slide members secured to the side members and movable therewith and extending underneath the base and provided with overlapping racks, a shaft extending underneath the base between said. racks, and pinions carried bysaid shaft and engaging said racks. I v
A mold including a base, side members movable transversely of the base toward and away from each other, slidemembers secured to the side members and movable therewith and extending underneath the base and provided with overlapping racks, a
shaft extending underneath the base between said racks, pinions carried by said shaft and engaging said racks, the side members being forined in theil' u'pper edges withfnotches, tie rods receiv ble in said notches and extending across the mold from one side memher to the other, and fastening devices earriedby said tie rods and adjust-ably mount ed thereon and engageable with the side niembers to hold the same in adjusted posi-' tion. I I
In testimony whereof 1 hereunto afiix my signature in the presenceof two witnesses.
