ARTIFICIAL BUILDING STONE. (Application'flled Aug. 13, 1901.) (No Model.)
f J Z d J ,To all whom it may concern NITED TATES 1 JACOB C. MOCLENAHAN, OF COLDlVATER, MICHIGAN.
ARTIFICIAL BUI LDING-STONE.
.srEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,727, dated April 29, 1902.
Serial No. 71,952. (No model.)
Be it known that I, J A0013 0. MoCLENAHAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coldwater, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Artificial Building-Stones, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in artificial building-stones; and the objecl-isto provide a building-stone made from artificial composition of materials which shall meet and supply all the purposes for which a build ing-stone is required in the erection of buildings, walls, partitions, and similar structures and construction. j
Another object is to provide a stone for the general purposes indicated which is corn posed of segregated component parts or eleinents adapted to be set and secured together to form a single integral stone.
A further object is to provide a hollow buildingstone composed of separate elements, parts, or pieces adapted to be packed in the smallest possible space for transportation.
"With these objects in view my invention consists in a building-stone possessing novel construction of parts and their operative aggroupment in combination.
I have fully and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings a preferred form of the constructions of my improved buildingstone, and reference being thereto had Figure 1 is a View in elevation showing the inner face of a molded slab or plate constituting one of the side piecesof the stone. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal'section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a stone, showing the parts as united and secured together. Fig. 4 is a perspective View of one of the interlocking partitions. Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section of the joint of the side piece and the partition, showing the cement binder inserted in the coinci dent grooves.
A designates a plate or slab made of suitable indurated cementitious substances or ingredients, and of such size, shape, and configuration as may fit it to the uses intended. I have indicated it as being an oblong rightangle body having a plain outer face and an tially as shown.
inner face made to suit the purpose of connection to its counterpart. This plateAconstitutes one of the duplicate side pieces of the stone when placedinposition. Atdetermined locking partitions may be inserted in the ways and be lodged on the wall of the closed ends. The inner wall of the plate may be strengthened by suitable ribs 5, arranged substan- The arrangement of diagonal ribs between the inner walls of the Vertical ribs and inclined and outwardly-directed ribs united at the middle of the outer vertical ribs and terminating at the corners of the stone gives ample strength and is preferred. In the inner faces of the vertical ribs are formed vertical grooves 6, which are intended to aline with coincident grooves in the ends of the interlocking partitions and form therewith the means provided'for locking the partitions and the side plates together. Because of the strengthening-ribs the body of the stone plate may be made lighter and thinner than when omitted, and thus a substantial saving of material is accomplished without sacrifice of required strength.
B designates the interlocking partitions,
consisting of such blocks or plates of made or artificial stone as may be suitable. They are of such width as shall determine the width or thickness of the stone and of such height as to approximately reach from bottom to top of the vertical ways in the side pieces of the stone. In the opposite sides of the interlocking partitions adjacent to the ends are formed vertical grooves 7, in alinement with the grooves 63, the two forming ways or wells into which properly-prepared cement 9 is poured or placed, so that when the ends of the partitions are arranged in the ways between the ribs and the cement inserted in the grooves and induration effected the parts of the stone are held firmly bound together.
The interlocking partitions B are formed with openings 8,which are designedfor ventilationand to serve as handholds in handling them and when inserting them in position in relation to the side plates of the assembled parts.
To assemble the parts, the side plates of the stone may be arranged parallel with each other and the vertical ways directly opposite toeach other. The ends of the interlocking partitions are then slipped in the vertical Ways and pushed down into position, and then the cement is placed in the grooves between the walls of the vertical ways and the interlocking ends of the partitions and permitted to harden, when the parts are rigidly fixed together.
What I claim is 1. An artificial building-stone comprising oppositely-arranged side pieces formed with vertical ways or grooves, and grooves in the walls of the ways. partitions having their ends formed to fit in the ways or grooves and having vertical grooves coincident with those of in the walls of said ways, and a cement binder in the registering grooves of the partitions and ways.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB c. MOOLENAHAN.
