FOLDING CHAIR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ltiar, 6, 1917.
Application filed April 13, 1916. Serial No. 90,874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLYDE L. CRAIG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Washington Court'House in the county 5 of Fayette and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Folding Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to 1 folding chairs and more particularly to a folding chair of the .type described and claimed in my Patent No. 1129793, granted February 23, 1915, the object of my present improvements being to provide a chair of this type so constructed as to be substantially non-tipping in use.
Specifically my present improvements provide separate forward supporting legs and back side bars, the latter being pivotally connected at their lower ends to the seat, and
being also pivotally connected at intermediate points to the upper ends of both the forward and rear supporting legs as distinguished from my patent, in which the for wardsupporting legs are lower extensions of the back side bars. It will thus be apparent that I am enabled to provide for different inclination of the forward supporting legs with respect to that of the back and am enabled to throw the former farther forward than in the patented arrangement so as to obviate all danger of tipping in use.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my present improvements, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improved chair in operative position.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the chair as in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the chair in folded position.
Referring now to these figures, the forward supporting legs 10 of my improved arrangement are so inclined with respect to the other parts that their lower forward ends extend in operative position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to points beneath the forward edge of the seat 11, the upper ends of these legs 10 being pivotally connected by pivot pins 12 to the upper ends of the rear supporting legs 13, the latter of which in operative position incline rearwardly and form a substantial triangle with the legs 10 at each side of the chair.
The side rails 14 of the seat 11 are intermediately pivoted at 15 to the forward legs 10 at points intermediate the ends of the latter and arev recessed at their rear ends be yond the pivots 15 in order to receive in the recesses the lower extremities of the side bars 16 of the back 17.
The lower extremities of the side bars 16 of the back 17 are pivotally connected by means of short links 18 to the rear portions of the side rails 14: of the seat, the ends of the links 18 extending into slots in said bars 16 and. said rails 14:.
The rear extremities of the side rails 14: of the seat are furthermore pivotally con nected by links 19 to the rear supporting legs 13, links 19 being substantially longer than links 18 and depending from the rear portion of the seat in operative position, as shown in Fig. 2, the rear extremities of the side rails 14 engaging within notches 20 in the rear legs in order'to brace the same and remove undue strain from the links 19.
It is thus apparent that the back 17 may be inclined differently from the inclination of the forward supporting legs 10 and in a greater degree than the inclination of the 30 legs, enabling the latter to be thrown farther forward than is usual in order to create an arrangement obviating all danger of tipping in normal use of the chair.
As seen in Fig. 2 in particular the pivot pins 12 connecting the back side bars 16 with the upper ends of the forward legs 10 pass also through the upper ends of the rear supporting legs 18, enabling the several parts to be folded fiatwise to the position shown' in Fig. 3, the folded structure being compact and being capable of convenient transportation from place to place.
I claim 1. A chair of the type described, comprising forward inclined supporting legs, a seat, the side rails of which are intermediately pivoted to said forward legs intermediate the ends of the latter and have rearward recessed extensions, a back inclined in a greater degree than'the inclination of the forward legs, the side bars of which back are extended at their lower ends into the bars intermediate the ends of the latter, said rear legs having notches into which the rear extremities of said seat rails engage in operative position, and links pivotally connecting said seat side rails and said rearsupporting rails.
2. A chair of the type described, comprising forward inclined supporting legs, a seat, the side rails of which are intern'iediately pivoted to said forward legs intermediate the ends of the latter, a back, the side bars of which extend below the seat and at the side thereof in operative position, links piv otally connecting the lower ends of the back side bars to the seat, re'ar supporting legs pivo-tally connected at their upper ends to the upper ends of the forward legs by means of pivot pins projecting through the back side bars intermediate the ends of the latter, said rear legs having means to receive and engage the rear extremities of the seat side rails in operative position, and links pivotally connecting the rear ends of the seat rails to the said rear legs.
8. A chair of the type described, comprising inclined forward and rear supporting legs, a seat pivotally connected at its rear side portions to said forward legs, links pivotally connecting the rear portion of the seat to the rear legs, a back interinediately pivoted at its sides to the upper ends of the legs and inclined in operative position in a a seat pivoted at its sides to the forward,
legs, links pivotally connecting the rear portion of the seat to the rear legs, a back interinediately pivoted at its sides to the upper ends of the supporting legs, and links pivotally connecting the lower side portions of the back to the seat.
A chair of the type described, coinprising inclined forward and rear supporting legs pivotally connected at their upper ends, a seat pivoted at its sides to the forward legs, links pivota-lly connecting the rear portion of the seat to the rear legs, a back interinediately pivoted at its sides to the upper ends of the supporting legs, and links pivotall'y connecting the lower side portions of the back to the seat. said rear legs hav ing means to receive and engage the rear extremities of the seat in operative position.
