IMPROVEMENT IN SWIVEL-LOOPS FOR FIRE-ARMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,835, dated December 12, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OLIVER F. VVINOHESTER, of the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attaching Swivel-Loops to Fire- Arms; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompany 7 ing drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification and represents, in

Figure l, a front view as applied to a band; Fig. 2, a side View; Fig. 3, the band detached; and in Fig. 4, a central section illustrating the method of inserting the loop.

This invention relates to an improvement in the construction of that part of a fire-arm to which the shoulder or slinging-strap is attached, commonly called swivels or swivel-loops the object being to produce a swivel equally as strong and at less cost than the common construction; and the invention consists in constructing the band or plate to which the loop is to be attached with a projecting ear, bored or drilled from each side toward the center, leaving a space or portion at the center, or nearly so, solid, and the loop constructed so that, when inserted as hereinafter described, the said solid portion will act as a stop to retain the loop in its proper position.

I illustrate the invention as applied to a band, the application to the plate or other part of the arm being substantially the same.

A is the band, here represented as one adapted for the arm known as the Winchester repeating arm, it being understood the form of the band must be in accordance with the arm to which it is to be applied; B, the ear to which the loop is attached. This is formed on that part of the band or of the plate where it is desired to arrange the loop, and is bored or drilled, as at a, Fig. 4, from both ends toward the center, leaving a portion of the metal d at or near the center. D is the loop, formed from wire of size to fit the holes drilled in the ear, and of a length to form the loop, and so that when formed as in Fig. 3 the space between the two ends will correspond to the solid portion d left in the ear. The loop is first formed, as seen in Fig. 4, so that one end will pass into one side of the ear, and when so inserted against the solid portion d the other end will pass down over the end of the ear, as seen in Fig. 4, to the hole upon that side then, forced down, that end of the loop passes into the ear, and the two sides of the loop assume a parallel position, as denoted in Fig. 4 and as seen in Fig. 1, the two ends of the loop approaching the solid portion (1, which prevents the displacement of the loop; and these two ends form the bearing or swivel upon which the loop turns.

By this construction the loop is formed without the usual pivot or pintle and forged ends of the loop. As before stated, the loop is attached to the plate or other part of the trimmings of the arm in the same manner.

I claim as my invention- The swivel-loop for fire-arms, inserted in the band-plate or other part of the trimmings of the arm, substantially in the manner described, and retained in position by the portion d of metal in the ear of the band or plate, as specified.
