F ig'.l 14 is a side elevation of one of the many.. tools which may be used with the supplemental jawsinstead of the pipe clamps.
In the illustrative embodiments of my invention shown in the drawings, 1 is an anvil having a hollow body member' 2 and providedL with the usual horn 3, and hardy 4, and with a fixed jaw 21. The interior 5 of the hollow body member 2 may be of any suitable configuration to coperate with the hollow supporting member 6 so that the latter will not rotate within the former. Preferably I provide the opening 5 in the hollow body member of the anvil 1 substantially of example as one rectangular in cross section to snugly lit the hollow ,rectangular supporting member 6. I also provide the hollow body member with additional openings or pockets 7, 7 to cooperate .with the locking head 8. This head is so formed as to snugly fit the non-circular opening 5, inv one of its positions, so that the locking head 8 can be readily moved in and out to engage with the different pookets or yopenings 7, 7 uppn the operation of a locking bolt 9.
This bolt 9 is preferablyv formed with a square or other non-circular head 10 adapted to be received within thecoperating recess 11 in the locking head 8, its shank passl ing through the flanged thimbles 12 and 13 and cooperating with a` nut 14 which serves to prevent, lthe locking bolt 9 from becoming vdisconnected from the thimbles 12 and 13.
ating handle 1Sl which I preferably, though not necessarily, provide with a weighted end 19 so that it will normally hang down and hold the locking bolt 9 in the position shown in Fig. 1, which will cause the lock# ing head 8 to normallyV engage some one of the pockets 7, 7. handle may be secured to the locking bolt in any suitable manner such as by the pin 20.
The fixed jaw 21 is preferably provided with an aperture 22, one end of which is provided with a non-circular flaring portion 23 for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
Upon the supporting member 6 I mount the movable jaw 24 of the vise so that it will slide freely providing it with a non-circular opening 25 to snugly receive the supporting member 6. I also provide the movable jaw 24 with an open pocket 26 provided with a U-shaped flange 27, Fig. 5, to cooperate with the groove 28 in the adjusting screw 29. This movable jaw is also provided with an aperture 30 for the reception of the drill press.
My drill press, which I have shown in connection with my vise, consists, in the preferred form, of a screw-threaded feed member 31 having male screw threads 32 which preferably engage with female screw threads within the screw 29.
Within the hollow screw threaded member 31 I mount a drill rod 34 which extends completely through the screw 31, one end 35 of it being preferably formed square to cooperate with the squared opening in the handle 36, a pin 37 being also preferably employed to secure the handle to the drill rod.
The other end of the drill rod is provided with a square or other non-circular head 38 which fits in the non-circular opening 39 in the drill head 40, the arrangement being suoli that any rotary movement of the handle 3G 4will cause the drill head 40' to rotate and with it any tool which may be mounted in the drill head socket 41. It is to be distinctly understood that the drill head 40 is rotated independently of the feed screw 31,
and yet when desired, the drill head 40 may be held from rotary movement and simply be moved laterally by the screw 31.
In practice when rotary movement is imparted to the drill rod 34 to rotate the drill point held in the drill head 40, the friction surface 201 of the drill head 40 will frictionally engage with th-e surface 200 of the screw threaded feed member 31 and will cause this feed member 31 to rotate at a slower speed and automatically feed the drill head 40 and its drill point to the work.
A detachable base ring 42 may be secured upon any work bench or other support 43 by means of screws 44, 44, Fig. 10, this ring being, therefore, for all practical purposes, permanently secured to the work bench. It is preferably provided with a plurality of radiating ribs 45 forming serrations to cooperate with similar serrations 4G, on `the body member 2. This body member is also provided with a base 47 having a recess 48 to receive the head 49 of the pivoting and locking bolt 50, which extends'through the base 47 base ring 42, and through the work bench or other suitable support 43 into engagement with the locking nut 51, operated by any suitable handle 52. rIhe anvil, as well as the entire vise, may be adjusted swivelly upon the base plate 42 into any position which may for the moment be desirable by loosening the locking nut 51 suliiciently to allow the serrations upon the base ring or disk 42 and the hollow body member 2 to pass each other and then tightening the nut 51. Ihis horizontal adjustment may be desirable simply for the anvil. portion of the tool, or may be desirable for the vise,
or the drill, or all portions of the tool. After being so used the locking nut 51 maybe again loosened to permit the entire tool to be swung back to take less room, or when for any reason, it may not.be desirable to have it remain in its last adjusted position upon the base ring 42. In case the work bench, or other support 43, is needed foi` other work, the entire tool, with the exception of the base ring 42, may be instantly if removed by unscrewing the locking nut 51 and lifting bodily the entire tool from the work bench, with the exception of the base ring 42, which may be used as an abutment or stop Afor planing boards or for any other purpose desired. Ihe parts can be immediately repositioned by simply again placing the bolt 50 through the opening in the work bench 43 and bringingthe serrations in the base ring 42 in their proper adjusted position.
In those cases, where it is desirable to operate the vise so that it will clamp work of different thicknesses, the first rough preliminary adjustment of the movable jaw 24, for work of that particular thickness, is obtained by pulling up upon the weighted arm 19 so as to `move the locking head 3 into alinement with the non-circular opening 5 in which position the supporting member 6 may be pushed in or pulled out from the hollow body member 2 to engage any particular pocket 7. The clamping of the particular work 53 is then done by screwing up the screw 29 so that the movable jaw 24 will directly contact with the work 53 or with an intermediate block of wood or other suitable filler 54.
Should it then be desired to operate upon the work 53 with the drill, the feed screw 31 is screwed within the screw 29 until the drill point, or other suitable tool, 55 contacts with the work 53 when the drill may be rotated by the handle 36 operating the drill head 40, the drill being seated in the drill pocket 41.
The drill is fed forward by suitably operating the feed screw 31.V By providing the fixed jaw 21 with the aperture 22, I insure that the point of the drill 55 will not be dulled or broken by contact with the fixed jaw of the vvise for when it `'has passed through the work it will slip harmlessly within the aperture 22.
In those cases where it is desirable to use a very vlong drill point 55, the screw 31 may be rotated until the drill head 40 becomes adjacent to, or within, some of the female screw threads 33 of the screw 29.
long drill point can be inserted through the opening 22 in the fixed j aw 21 and the opening 30 inthe movable jaw 24 until it reaches the seat 41 in the drill head 40.
l/Vhile ordinarily the feed for the drill point is entirely done by the feed screw 31, there are instances in which a preliminary feed may be given by first screwing up the screw 29 and then subsequently screwing the feed screw 31 so that both these screws 29 and 31 may serve as feed screws for the drill point of the drill press as well as one of them, 29, serving to operate the movable jaw 24 of the vise. But in all instances, the work 53 is securely held in the vise without any inter- 25 ferencefrom the operation of the drill.
In case the drill is not o ften used, it may be temporarily removed by simply unscrewing the feed screw 31 from the screw 29, it
being again replaced whenever desired, vthe combination tool meanwhile occupying less space.
The movable jaw 24 is moved rearwardly upon the rectangular member 6 by the end 56 of the screw 29 fitting within the open 35i pocket 26 of the movable jaw 24 so as to permit the groove 28 to coperate with the flange 26 on the movable jaw, which will cause the movable jaw to move rearwardly j with the screw in an obvious manner. The screws 29 and 31 are operated by their respective handles 57 and 58.
The standard 17 may be formed integral with the supporting member 6 but preferably it is formed separate and snugly lits the supporting member being prevented from becoming disconnected by the flange 16 of the thimble 13 coperating with the flange 100 of the standard 17. This arrangement ermits ready and cheap renewals in case of Ereakage'from any cause.
In some instances I may form the operating screw to operate the movable aw 5'9 of the vise with only male screw threads 60, Fig. 7 and provide the feed screw 61 for the drill with male screw threads 62 to engage with female screw threads 63 in the movable jaw 59, though the arrangement previously described is the preferred construction.
In some cases I may provide the fixed and 65 mental aws may be provided with any suit- Such a movable jaws with supplemental jaws 73,
able iixedor movablepart to do any particular or special work. For example, I have shown the supplemental jaw 73 provided with an opening 76, Fig. 13, and the supplemental jaw 75 with an opening of a 79 different character 77, Fig. 12. I have shown by way of example pipe clamps mounted within the supplemental jaws, though it is to be understood, of course, that my invention is not to be limited to this 75 particular attachment. The opening 7 6 in the supplemental jaw 73 has inwardly extending tongues 78, 78 which in effect form two seats 79, 79 for the reception of the pipe clamps 80, 8O which will be 80 spaced from each other by the tongues 78. The other supplemental jaw 74 has a narrower and shorter slot 77 for the reception `of the rpipe clamp 81 which is shorter than the pipe clamps 80, and fits between the g5 ltongues 78, 78 so that pipes of various diameters may be clamped by the pipe clamps 80 and 81.
Instead of mounting pipe clamps within the supplemental jaws I can, Vof course, mount any other plate for any particular work to be performed such as for holding, bending or shaping any desirable article. I have shown by way of example a plate 82 in Fig. 14 having a semi-circular opening 83 g5 which may be mounted in the openings in the supplemental jaws and used for bending awning rods o-r similar elements.
Having thus described this invention in connection with the illustrative embodiments thereof to the details of which I do not desire to be limited, except as defined by my claims, what is claimed as new and what it is desired to sec-ure by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim- 1. The combination in a vise of a hollow body member having a fixed jaw and a noncircular opening and pockets, a hollow noncircular supporting member snugly fitting the opening in the vise, flanged nipples located in the ends of the hollow supporting member and provided with openings for the reception of a locking bolt, a movable jaw mounted upon the hollow supporting member, a removable standard -mounted upon the hollow supporting member and cooperating with the flange of one of the nipples, means for operating the movable jaw mounted upon the standard, a locking head upon one end of the locking bolt and an loperating handle upon the other end.
