Be it known that l, CrrAnLEs F.' KABE, la citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Visconsin, have'invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables, of which the following is specification.
The iny'f'en'tion relates to tables, and more' particularly to the class of folding tables.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a table of this character wherein the construction thereof permits the automatic folding of the same with despatch, and when in folded position will occupy the least possible space so as to allow the convenient storage or shipment of the table.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a table of this character wherein the same is adaptable for use as a card, serving, dining, ice cream parlor, or drug store table, or for any other use, and will conveniently fold automatically, and with equal ease can be readily and quickly un folded without possibility of pinching the fingers of the user.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a table of this character which is simple in construction, neat and attrac-v tive in appearance, strong, durable, reliable and eflicient in operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction,'combi nation and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawing A Figure 1 is a side elevation of a table constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view showing the table folded.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing. Y
Referring tothe drawing in detail, the table comprises a top 5,v preferably of circular shape, and made from wood, although the said top may be of any other desirable shape, and can be made from any other suitable material, having Xed to its under side a pair of spaced parallel cleats 6 to which are swingingly connected a pair of supportlngl legs Zunited through the medium-of a cross brace 8,v the pivots 9fconnec'ting the said legst7 to 4'the cleats G being passed through the legs and said cleats. y
)wiingingli7 Connected tothe legs 7 is another' pair of legs 10,'th'e'pivots 11 connecting the said legs being passed through both pairs @f legs at an intermediate point thereof; These legs 10 are joined to each other through the medium of a plurality of cross rungs 12, and to the under side of the top 5 intermediate the cleats 6 or centrally of the said top is a U-shaped resilient or spring guide strap `13in which works the uppermost rung for guiding the legs 10 toward and away from a pair of spaced hook-like members Litfixed to the under side of the said top 5 lin the unfolding and folding of both pairsof legs 7 and 10, respectively.
FiXedto the rung next to the uppermost rung connecting the legs 1() is one end of a coiled retractile spring 15, which has its opposite end engaged in the under side of thev top 5, and this spring serves to automatically move the legs 10 to unfolding position on the lifting of the said top 5, and during the movement of these legs 10 the legs 7 are also moved to unfolded position for supporting the top. This resilient guide strip 13 is slightly bowed upwardly or in the direction of the under face of the top 5 so as to afford a clearance for the cross rung 12 to which the spring 15-is attached, and this strip 13 serves to actas a spring in throwing the legs 10 away from the top 5 for the opening of the table.
On pushing inwardly upon the inner ends of the legs `10 against the resistance of the spring 15 both pairs of legs 7 and 10 will be brought to folded position, and likewise the top folded substantially parallel therewith.
The table opens automatically, and to permit this it is onlv necessary to hold the top in a-level position and drop the legs toward the floor, and in this movement the legs will become unfolded automatically asthe spring l5 acts to throw the legs l0 crosswise of the legs 7, and the uppermost cross rung 12 connecting the legs 10 will engage in the hooklike members 14 so` that the table will be 'firmly supported in position for use. Now to close the table it is only necessary to tilt the table backward with the left hand, letting the outer pair of legs rest firmly upon the floor, and by reaching underneath the top A folding, table comprising a top having spaced parallel cleats fixed to the under side of the same, a pair of leg frames pivoted to each other for swinging movement relative to one another, a pivot connecting one ofthe leg frames to the cleats, a U-shaped resilient guide fixed to the under side of the top loetween the cleats, rung in the other les; frame and slidable through the guide, a second rung carried by the last named leg frame and adapted to contact with 'the guide which serves as a spring for slightly pushing the leg` frames away from the top when the leg frames and top are closed together, and resilient means connected to the second named rung and the top for automatically spreading the legs on the raising of the top. In testimony whereof I my si gnature in presence of two Witnesses.
