' CARTRIDGE-BELT.
Specification of Letters Patent. 7 Patefited Feb. 2'7, 1917.
Application filed November 29, 1916. Serial No. 134,110.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. FISHER, a citizen of the United States, and a'resident of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in Cartridge-Belts; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cartridge belts and more particularly to means which will serve to reinforce the pockets, the object of the invention being to provide simple means which will serve effectually to reinforce that portion of a cartridge pocket which receives the pointed or projectile portions of the cartridges, and to so construct said reinforcing means that the same will cover the ends as well as the bottom and front and back of the lower portion of the pocket. I
lVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a cartridge belt showing an application of my invention; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the combined cover member and reinforcing means; Fig. 3 is a view of the blank from which said cover member and reinforcing means are formed, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of a cartridge belt showing a modification of my invention.
1 represents thebody of the belt and the same may comprise a plurality of plies of woven fabric. Pockets 2 are provided on the belt and fixed thereto in any desired manner and closed at the bottom.
Each pocket is provided with a combined cover and reinforcing member 3 which may conveniently be made of woven fabric. In preparing the device 3, I may provide a woven blank 4 having its upper portion 5 of a width approximately the same as that of the pocket 2, while its lower portion 6 is extend a sufficient distance above the same to form a cover flap 7 for the pocket. The widened lower portion of the blank will be extended over the bottom of the pocket and then upwardly against the inner face of the front of the pocket and secured to the latter in any suitable manner as by stitching as shown at 8. The respective'side, edge portions 9-10 ofthe folded wide portion of the blank will lie against'the ends of the pocket and serve to reinforce the same. Thus a reinforcing pocket for the pointed ends of the cartridges will be provided. The fabric device 3 maybe secured to the back of the pocket in any suitable manner, such as stitching 11 near the top of the pocket.
It will be observed that my improvements provide means for reinforcing the entire bottom portion of the pocket which receives the pointed ends of the cartridges and provents such pointed ends from penetrating the bottom portion of the pocket.
Instead of connecting the combined cover and reinforcing device 3 to the pocket as above described, the back portion of the pocket may be woven tubular, so as to provide an elongated loop 12 open at its top and bottom and terminating at its lower edge just above that portion of the pocket wherein the reinforcement is located. The blank used in this form of pocket construction is the same as that above described and in applying it to the-pocket 2, the narrow cover portion is threaded upwardly through the open loop 12 until the reinforcing bottom portion of the blank assumes the position as previously described and as shown in Fig. 4, and the device may be secured at 8 and 11 by means of lines of stitching or in any other suitable manner.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
1. The combination with a cartridge pocket, of a memberinserted therein and having a portion folded over the bottom and extending partially up the front of the pocket, said member also having side edge portions which project forwardly and rearwardly respectively from the back and front of said folded portion and reinforce the ends of the pocket. 7
2. The combination with a cartridge pocket, of a member fastened in said pocket and having a Wide bottom portion lying against the back, front and ends of the bottom portion of the pocket, and forming a reinforcing pocket for the pointed ends of cartridges.
3. The combination With a cartridge pocket, of a combined cover and reinforcing member comprising a portion approximately the same in Width as that of the pocket and secured to the back of the latter, and a Wider bottom portion providing reinforce- Oopies of this patent may be obtained for ment for the back, front, bottom and ends of that portion of the pocket occupied by the pointed ends of cartridges.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this 15 specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses. V
