WATER HEATER FOR GAS STOVES.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 24,1915.

WALLACE S. ANDREWS, F SYRACUSE, NEW YQRK.
WATER-HEATER FOR GAS-STOVES;
. ments in water heaters for gas stoves having one or more burners below the top thereof. These gas stoves or ranges are usually provided Wltl'l a depressed marginal flange extending entirely around the burner or system of burners for receiving and supporting the marginal edges of one or more grills or removed and replaced by the plate with itsgrids which are loosely seated upon the flange and may be removed at will to permit access to the burners and underlying portions of the stove for cleaning and other purposes, and also serves to support cooking utensils over theflame of the burners.
It is well known that when these utensils are placed upon the grid over the burner, the flame is deflected laterally or radially in all directions and that a considerable amount of heat generated by the burner is lost, and the main object of my present invention is not only to utilize this waste heat in heating the water of a storage tank, but also to permit the Waterheating shell or plate to be used in place of the usual grill or grid,'that is, I have sought to provide a substantially yet hollow water-containing plate of v preferably the rear side of the shell '6- fiat substantially the same outline and area as the grid or grill so that the latter may be marginal edges resting upon the depressed flange around the system of burners and its intermediate portion formed with circular openings corresponding -in number to and registering with said burners.
Another object is to provide means for connecting this water-containing plate to a suitable reservoir or tank where hot or warm water may be held in reserve for use in different parts of the house where necessary 0 -desirable.
Other objects and uses will be brought out in the following description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gasrange* with my lmproved Water heater thereon.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 2'7, 1917,
Application filed April 24, 1915. Serial No. 23,640.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal sectional view through the Water plate.
Fig- 3 is a transverse Vertical sectional view of the same plate and adjacent portion of the top of the range or gas stove.
The gas stove or range as 1 is provided with the usualtop 2 having an opening 3- of sufficient size to surround a system of burners -4, said top being provided with a depressed flange 5- surrounding the opening 3 for receiving and supporting the usual grill or grid which is now removed'and replaced by my invention consisting of a substantially fiat hollow water-containing. shell 6-. -The usual heat escape pipe 1 projects upwardly from the stove top at the rear side thereof.
This shell is substantially rectangular and of just suflicient length and breadth'to permit its marginal edges to rest loosely upon a the marginal flange 5, thereby covering the opening 3 and upper walls substantially flat and parallel forming an interior relatively shallow water chamber 7. The rear side of the shell'is curved inwardly at the central portion as at 6 to provide a clearance space for the heat escape pipe. The main body of the shell provided with vertical openings 8' corresponding in number to and registering with the burners .4 to permit the heat to ,said shellhaving its lower pass from the burners through the opening "for heating any cooking utensils which may he placed upon the upper surface of the shell 6 over said openings. I
A partition 9 extends from 'one side,
and also between the water supply pipe 10 and a return pipe 11 leading to and from the. interior of the shell, the parti tion 9-' serving to cause the water to.
circulate through all parts of the interior of annulangriddle seat for receiving a the'sh'ell and entirelyaround the. walls of terior griddle as -1$- with its upper face coincident with that of the top of the shell and when necessary maybe placed in operative position to restrain the upflow of the heated air from the burners -4land cause the heated products to impinge against the walls of the Openings to heat the water in the inot the shell -6-, although the presence of a kettle or other utensil over the opening will perform the same function and the intention is, to utilize the heat which would otherwise be wasted during cooking operations in heating the water in the shell --6- and storing such heated water in a suitable reservoir, not shown, for'subsequent use.
'What I claim is: Y A water heater for gasstoves having the usual flat top and heat escape pipe projecting upwardly from the top, said heater comprising a one-piece hollow casting composed of flat bottom and top walls having coaxial vertical openings for registration with the gas burners, said walls being held in parallel spaced relation by marginal walls uniting their outer edges and by circular walls uniting the edges around the openings and also by a partition uniting the central portions thereof, the rear marginal wall being curved inwardly to provide a clearance space for the heat escape pipe, and with the partition extending-forwardly from the curved portion, said partition extending forwardly from the center of the rear marginal wall between said openings and to a point a short distance from the front marginal. wall and out-flow and return pipes secured to the rear marginal wall at opposite sides of the partition.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of April, 1915.
WALLACE S. ANDREWS.
