PAINTING APPARATUS.

Application filed April 29, 1916.

To all whom it may concern oe it known that 1, CHARLES RUs'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Painting Apparatus, of which the following isa specification.

lvly invention relates to improvements in painting apparatus which while specially constructed for use in painting hollow metal beds, may be used for any purpose where it would operate in an efficient manner.

At present in the painting of hollow metal beds by the dipping or immersion process,

the paint enters the interior of the hollow.

bed sections and in' this manner a great amount ofpaint is wasted. The main purpose of my invention is the provision of an apparatus which will overcome this objection and will prove a great saving'in the amount of paint used upon the beds.

Another object of my invention is the provision of an apparatus which will quickly and readily dip the head or foot section of the bed and insure the proper application of the paint to the entire surface, thus performing its functions in a rapid and eflicient manner.

Another object of my invention is the provision of a painting vapparatus which will paint the bed sections in a smooth and even manner, which will have means for raising and lowering the sections, and in conjunction with such raising and lowering means, will have means for conveying the painted bed sections to any desired place.

A further object of my invention is the provision of a painting apparatus which will operate with ease and rapidity; which will be of simple, durable and inexpensive construction, and which generally will be thoroughly ollicient and practical.

lVith these objects in view my invention consists of means for raising and lowering the bed sections, a paint containing tank for applyingthe paint to said sections, and

floats 1n said tank for fitting the open ends of the posts of said sections to prevent paint from entering the bed sections.

The invention further consists of means for raising and lowering the bed sections, means for applying the paint to said sections, means for closing the hollow posts to prevent the paint from entering the interior of said sections, and means for receiving and conveyin the painted sections.

The invention finally consists in a painting apparatus embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts for service, substantially as shown, described and claimed. 1

In order that the details of construction and the operation of my inventionmay be understood and its many advantages be appreciated, I have shown in the accompanying drawing an apparatusembodying my improvement, it being understood that I reserve the right to make any changes in the construction which fall within the scope of the claims.

Referring by letter to the drawing, in which similar letters denote the same part in all the views The letter A, designates a tank or receptacle ot' the proper size and shape for containing the paint, said tank being formed with the flaring mouth B, the purpose of which is to save the paint which drops from the head or foot bed sections 0, said sections being ra iscd or lowered through the medium of the frame D having the hooks E, and from which leads the flexible cord F over drum G, on shaft H, which shaft is mounted in hangers J, and also carries the drum K, upon which is wound the flexible connection L, carrying the weight M, providing a counter balance means by which the bed sections are easily and quickly raised and lowered into the tank containing the paint.

it will thus be seen that the bed sections are lowered into the tanl; and that as soon as said sections enter the tank the floats close the hollow posts and allow the paint to be applied to the exterior of the bed sections but prevent any paint from entering the interior, and that as soon as the section has been completely dipped in the paint it is raised and placed upon the rack it, which is provided with a trolley construction S, adapted to travel on a track T, proper distance where it is received by the turn table U, and by which it is directed to any desired place, said turn table fornr ing a connection with tracks leading to any place desired.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be at once apparent that I provide means for applying the paint to the exterior or surface and preventing it from entering the interior of he sections, also that such means are positive and automatic in their action and that in addition to providing such means the apparatus embodies a receiving and conveying mechanism for the bed sections, all of which operate jointly to form a complete and eflicient apparatus for the purposes intended.

I claim l. A painting apparatus, consisting of a paint container, means for lowering hollow bed sections into said container and elevating said sections therefrom, and means in said container to prevent the entrance of paint to the interior of said bed sections.

3. A painting apparatus, consisting of a paint container, counter balance means for lowering and raising hollow bed cctions, floats in said container to act as stoppers to close the hollow posts of said bed sections, and means for anchoring said fioats.

l. A painting apparatus, consisting; of a paint cimtainer, means for lowering hollow bed sections into said container and elerating said sections therefrom, and floats in said container having a reduced portion adapted to fit in and close the ends of the hollow posts of said bed sections.

A painting apparatus, consisting of a paint container, means for lowering hollow bed sections into said container and elei'at ing said sections therefrom, and floats in said container having a reduced portion adapted to fit in and close the ends of the hollow posts of said bed sections, said lowering and raising means consisting of a counter shait disposed above said container, a pair of pulleys mounted thereon, and a counter balance secured to one pulley and a bed section engaging hool: secured to the other, substantially as described.
