To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM D. JOHNSON,
a citizen of-the United States, residing at Giarrett, in the county of Somerset and with the nature of the work to be performed.
Another important characteristic of the invention resides in the fact that the device in its entirety can be easily and quickly elevated or lowered with respect to its support to accommodate itself to the comfort of the operator, so as to permit him to work either in a standing or a sitting 'POSlillOIl.

The outermost members 10 are provided with a longitudinal series of openings 15 adapted to be engaged by a set screw 16 carried by the support 14 for the purpose of holding the clamp in any desired adjusted position. j I
Carried by certain of the vertical members 10 of the fixed jaw A are eye bolts 17, which have their eye portions 18 disposed in advance of the jaw and fitted within a slot in the corresponding members 10 of the jaw B, and
adapted to receive a pin 18, an arrangement tween the respective jaws, to accommodate saws of different characters, and also to pernnt the saws to be clamped with any degree of effectiveness, consistent with the work to be performed. Adjustably mounted upon the bolt and arranged at the opposite sides of the jaw A are nuts 19 which hold the parts in adjusted position.
Straddling each of the upright members 10 of the jaw A is a yoke 20 having its parallel limbs 21 slotted as at 22, and projecting an appreciable distance forwardly of the A, a set screw or the like 23 passing through the slots 22 of the limbs and engaging the jaw A to hold the yoke in proper position thereon. The yokes are operatively connected with the movable jaw 13, and are capable of adjustment through the instrumentality of the thumb nut 25 to vary the distance between the respective jaws, proportionate with regard to the adjustment of the eye bolt 17 so that the clamping members 12 will be disposed in parallelism when moved into gripping relation.
For the purpose ofoperating the movable jaw B toward and away from the fixed jaw A, 1 preferably employ a crank shaft 26 journaled upon the by means of the straps 29. This shaft is suitably connected with the fixed jaw A throughthe instrumentality of the links 30 which have one end pivotally associated with the limbs of the yoke 20, and their opposite ends apertured as at 31 forming a bearing for the crank portions 32 of the shaft 26. All the links with the exception of the two outermost links are provided with an enlarged central opening 33 communicating with the aperture 31 by means of an elongated slot 34: which permits the links to be properly associated with or mounted upon the shaft 26 from either end of the latter. The openings 33 receive the shaft and are sufficiently large to permit the links to be moved longitudinally thereof to their proper, position, subsequent to which the links may be moved laterally to bring the apertures 31 into engagement with the crank portions 32 of the shaft. The end links 30 as above stated are not provided with the slot 34: and consequently serve to move the jaw B away from the jaw A when the shaft 26 is rotated in the proper direction through the instrumentality of the handle 35, which latter is mounted upon the shaft and secured thereto in any suitable manner. It is of course understood that when the shaft is rotated in the opposite direction the jaw B is moved into gripping relation with the jaw A to effectively clamp the work therebetween.
As shown in Fig. 7 use is made of a supporting bracket of angular formation preferably including a slotted base 36 and jaw l3 and having its portions 27 arranged in bearings 28 formed in the vertical members 10, and held therein" slottecLpai-allel end walls 37 connected by means of the wall 38, and which bracket is adapted to be mounted upon a fixed jaw A by means of a set screw 39 in the manner shown in Fig. 8. By reason of the formation of this bracket it will be noted that the same can bearranged longitudinally of the outermost members 10 of the jaw, in which position the set screw 39 is passed through the slot in the piece 36, while one of the end walls 37 presents a suitable support which can be secured in any manner upon a work bench or the like. It will be further observed that the slot in the base 36 permits the bracket to be arranged in a horizontal. position upon any of the vertical members 10 of the jaw, so that the adjacent end walls of two of these brackets when arranged in horizontal position can be adjusted toward and away from each other to effectively engage a post, tree or the like upon which it desired to support the device as a whole. The brack ts can also be arranged to project rearwardly at right angles from the vertical members 10 of the aw to permit of the, device being supported upon a wall the like, it being understood that these brackets when arranged longitudinally of themembers 10. of the jaw provide a capable substitute for the supporting frames 14 disclosed in Fig. 1', and also permits of the clamp being adjusted vertically of the bench or. the like upon which the bracket is secured. It is manifest that I have provided a clamp of the character described, wherein th movable jaw can be quickly and easily adjusted for the purposes hereinabove mentioned, and while the clamping members 12 have one edge curved longitudinally to accommodate a cross cut saw as hereinabove stated, saws of different characters can be clamped between the jaws throughout their entire length, thus efiectively holding the saw immovable to permit of the teeth being set with a hammer or the like.
While it is .believed-that'fromthe fore going description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent I desire to have itunderstood that the component parts of the invention may be constructed from. any suitable material and vary in dimensions and design without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is 1. A clamp of the class described com prising a fixed jaw, a relatively movable jaw carried by the fixed jaw and capable of adjustment, means for controlling the adjustments of said movable jaw, and an angnlar shaped slotted bracket adjustably associated with said fixed jaw for the purpose described.
2. A clamp of the class described com prising a support, a fixed jaw mounted thereon and capable of adjustment with respect thereto, a second jaw pivotally mounted on the first jaw and disposed in confronting relation thereto, a crank shaft journaled on said second jaw, and a connection between said shaft and fixed jaw for moving said second jaw respectively into and out of gripping relation with the fixed jaw upon reverse movements of said shaft.
3. A clamp of the class described comprising a support, a fixed jaw mounted thereon and capable of adjustment with respect thereto, a movable jaw, means carried by the fixed jaw for pivotally supporting said movable jaw in confronting relation thereto, said means being adjustable to vary the distance between said jaws, a crank shaft journaled on said movable jaw, a connection between said shaft and fixed jaw for operating the movable jaw when the shaft is rotated, said connection being adjustable to vary the distance between said jaws pr0- portionate with the adjustment of said means.

A clamp of the class described comprising a support, a fixed jaw mounted thereon and capable of adjustment with respect thereto, a movable jaw pivotally mounted on the fixed jaw and disposedin confronting relation thereto, a yoke member supported upon the fixed jaw, a crank shaft journaled upon said movable jaw, and' a pivoted link connection between the yoke and said shaft, and means for rotating the shaft to operate said movable jaw.
5. A clamp of the class described comprising a support, a fixed jaw mounted thereon and capable of adjustment with respect thereto, a movable jaw pivotallymounted upon the fixed jaw and disposed in confronting relation'thereto, a plurality permit said links to be removably associa-.
ated with the crank portions of the shaft,
and means for rotating the shaft to operate said movable jaw.
