' n A o HARVEY W LLS, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.-
PACKAGE.
T0 all whom it'mag concern:
Be it known thatI HARvn'Y H. lVELLs,"
citizen of the United States, residing at .Ghi-
cago, in the county of Cook and State of;
Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Packages, of which; the following 1s a fulhclear, concise, andexact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a box employing j body and cover portions that are in telescoping relation and resides in the novel disposition of a tying or binding string for holding the cover and body portions of the box in close. assembly or closed relation, the string bcing threaded or weaved through two opposite sides and the top of the cover, crossed beneath the bottom of the body, and passed from its place ofcrossing beneath the bottom of the box body over the remaining sides and top of the cover and through a loop formed upon the'exterior of the box cover in the portion of the string that is threaded or weaved through the topof the box cover. This loop on the top of-the box cover and the crossing in the string on the bottom of the box body cooperate to prevent the portion of the string that passes through said loop from being slipped endwise, over the box, assuming that the ends of the string have been suitably. fastened together as b means of a knot or seal, or both.
I will explain my invention more fully by reference to the accompanying drawing showing the preferred embodiment thereof and in which Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of a box tied with string in ac cordance with my invention and looking respectively toward the top and bottom of the box; Fig. 3 is a view on line 33 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4: is a view on line 4 4of Fig. 1.
Like parts are indicated by similar characters of reference throughout the different figures.
In the telescoping box shown the telescoping body and cover portions are of substantially the'same depth or'height but the invention is not to be limited to a box having these characteristics. The top 1 of the cover has two openings 2 and? which are respectively adjacent the cover sides 4: and-5, in which latter portions of the box cover openings 6 and 7 are provided, desirably near the bottom edges of these sides. String 8 is weaved through these openings in these side 1 Specification of Letters Patent.

and top portions of the box cover, the string passing over thefcorners of the box cover that are formed by'the top 1 and sides 4 and 5. In addition to the openings2 and 3 in the .top 1 -o'f the box, cover, there are also provided-a pair of collocated openings 9" and 10 through which the string passes from beneath thetop of the cover to the exterior 'OfthB box cover to form aloop 11. When the box cover and body are assembled telescoping relation the string 8 is continued from the openings 6 and 7 along the exterior surface of the bottom of the box body, the string being crossed beneaththebottom of the box body toform interengaging loops 7 whose bights 12 and 13 are interenga'ged, the v ends of the string being continued across the bottom of the box body and over the 'remaining two sides of the box cover and across the top of the box cover transversely to the direction in which the string is weaved through 7 this top and through the loopformed in the string above the top of the boxcover, whereafter the ends of the string are tied or fastened together as by means of a knot 14:. -A seal 15 may. also be applied to the tied ends of the string toguard the 1 string. from being untied. The string which is passed over the top 'of 'the box cover transverselyto the direction of the portion of the string that is weaved through the top of the-cover is passed through the loop 11 to be disposed between the portion of the string forming this loop and the top of the box cover. The interengaging- bights 12 and 13 and the loop 11 cooperate to prevent the portion of the string which is passed around the box and through the loop 11 from being slipped endwise over the box.
Having thus described my. invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:
The combination with a box formed of telescoping .body and cover portions, there being an opening in the top of the cover adjacent each of two opposite sides of the cover and two other andcollooated openings beopenings and upon the exterior of'the' cover these-cover sides being crossedto form loops having interengaging bights, the ends of the string being continued across the bottom of the box body and over the remaining two sides of the box cover and across the top of the box cover transversely to the direction in which the string is threaded through the top of the box cover, the string passing also I throughtheaforesaid loop that is formed in the string between the aforesaid collocated openings, the ends of the string being fastened together, the aforesaid interengaging bights-in the loops of the string beneath the bottom of the box body and the loop in the string between the collocated openings in the top of the box cover cooperating to preventfthe portion of the string that passes around the box through this loop from being slipped off the box.
.In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe 'my name this third day of July A. D. 1916.
