Description

FRANK J. rnrnusna, or IRONWOOD, MICHIGAN.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING eAnPE Ts.
covering upon Stairways.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character, which is extremely simple. in
construction, inexpensive to manufacture,
and attractive in appearance.
A further objectof the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character so constructed that the attaching brackets are arranged beneath the carpet or floor covering and a portion of the device which is visible closely resembles a single continuous rod Other objects and advantages of themvention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in whichlike numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plurality of devices embodying my invention, showing them in use, 7
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the device removed, a portion being shown in section, V
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one end of the device, the elements being separated,
Fig. l.- is a similar view of a key and. holding socket, and,
Fig. 5 is aside elevation of a tube included in the invention.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral designates a plurality of steps, embodying horizontal and vertical portions 11 and 12. The steps are covered by a strip of carpet 13 or other floor covering.
The numeral 14. designates one of my improved attaching devices as a whole, which is arranged above a horizontal portion of the strip adjacent the vertical. portion of the next step.
Each attaching device let embodies tubu J. PETRUsHA,
I Specification of Letters Patent Pgt ented Feb,20,1917
Application filed September 7, 1915. Serial No. 49,236.
each of which is provided at its inner end with a bracket 17, preferably formed integral therewith. This bracket embodies vertical and horizontal portions 18 and 19, adapted to be attached bymeans of screws or the like to the vertical and horizontal portions 12 and 11 of the steps, as isobvious. The sleeve 15 has its outer end closed by a cap 15, as shown. 'As more clearly shown in- Fig. 1, the brackets 17 being disposed upon the inner ends of the tubular sockets or sleeves 15 and 16, are arranged beneath or behind the carpet 18, and are entirely covered thereby. V
' The numeral 20 designatesa rod, preferably in the form of a tube, which is adapted to be arranged between the pair of holding sockets or sleeves 15 and 16', in end to end relation. This rod is preferably longitudi nally extensible, and for this purpose is formed in sections 20 and 21, telescoping,
as shown. By being adjustable, the tube -2O may be used in connection with carpets of different widths.
In Fig. 5, I have shown a single noneXtensible tube 20 adapted .to be substituted for the adjustable tube 20, if desired.
One end of the tubular rod section 21 is provided with a reduced extension 21, preferably a plug inserted therein, while the invention is in no sense restricted to this precise construction. The reduced extension 21 is adapted to be inserted within the inner end the tubular pocket or sleeve 15, as shown.
The nmneral QZ'designa-tes a key, havinga head 23 similar in shape and appearance to the head 15. Thiskey is adapted to be inserted within the socket or sleeve 16 and longer than the sleeve, to project inwardly beyond it, and enter the adjacent end of the tube portion 20, thus holding the tube 20 inplace) 1 In the use of the device, the bracket 17 is first attached to the steps 10 at the desired points and the carpet 13' placed upon the steps forwardly of or above these brackets to cover them. The reduced end 21 of the tube 20 is then insertedin-the socket or sleeve 15 and the key 22 moved into the socket or sleeve 16 and its inner end inserted in the adjacent end. of the thus holding it in place.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described tube 20,
is to be taken as a preferred example of the i same, and that various changes in the shape,
size, and arrangement of'parts may be resortedrto Without departing'from the spirit of the lnventlon or the scope ofthe suhjoined claim.
Y Having 'thus described the invention, I
and vertical portions of the step and carryng outwardly prqectmg sleeves, rigidly secured thereto, the sleeves beingarranged Wholly at one end of the bracketswhereby the sleeves will be positioned adjacent the edges of the carpet when the brackets are arranged therebeneath; a cap clos ng the outer end of one sleeve; a rod to be arqv w thi Patent a e h me ir and provided at one end With a reduced projection to enter tliecorresponding sleeve,
andhaving a recess formed in its opposite 'end; and a pin adapted for insertion through "thefothe'r sleeve and being longer than the sleeve so that its inner end extends into the recess of the rod to lock the rod in place, said pin having a cap at its outer end which is identical with the first namedcap; suhstantially as described.
