LADDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1v, 1920.
f Application filed February 25, 1919. Serial N o. 279,138.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, MORITZ SCHULZE, a citizen of the Republic of Brazil, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladders; and I' do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to irnprovements in ladders; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel extension means for the side-bars or members of ladders, which is adapte-d to be attached to and to be used with the supporting ends of the side-bars or members of the ladder, such means being adjustable, so that side-bars or members can be made longer and extended, and that the ladder can be properly placed against a building or the like, though the ground or surface upon which the ladder may be placed is uneven.
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide the side-bars or members of a ladder with lengthening and adjusting devices for the proper support of the ladder upon uneven ground or surface, and to dispense with 'the dangerous custom of placing unstaple props under the ends of the side-bars of the ladder, as is now ordinarily the custom.
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly( enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description .of the present invention.
With the various objects of the present invention in view the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel lengtheningand adjusting means forthe side-bars or members of ladders hereinafter more fully set forth;
and, the present invention consists, furtheru more, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and. then finally embodied in the clauses of mthe claim which are. appended to and which form an essential part of the said specification.
which form a part of The iiivention is lillustrated in the acoompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the lower portionV of a ladder, the side-bars or membersof which are shown with lengthening and adj-iusting means, illustrating one emb odiment of the principles of the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Y
' Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section` said section being taken on line 3-3 in said Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of one of the'side-bars or members of the ladder and the lengthening and adjusting means connected therewith, said section being taken o n line 4% in said Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a similar section of the same, said section being taken on line 5 5 in said Fig. 2.
imilar characters of reference are ernployed in all of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference-character l indicates the usual side-bars or members of a ladder, said bars or members being connected by the usual rounds 2.
Each side-bar or member l is provided lwith a laterally extending hole or perforation 3, and with a recessed portion, as 4.-, in which is fitted a plate 5, preferably secured in place by means of screws 6, or other suitable means of fastening, and each plate being` provided with an outwardly extending holdingor retaining means, in the form of a lug, projection lor rib 7, or the like. Each main member ofthe lengthening or adjusting means is in the Vform or' a channeled member or element, comprising a face-portion S and two marginal side-members 9, all adapted to embrace and to be slidably disposed upon the lower end-portions of the said side-bars or members l, as illustrated in the several figures of the drawings. The lower portions of the face-portionv 8 and the two side-members 9 may be connected by a web or connecting element 10, providing a 'foot and a means of protection for the end of each side-bar or member l of the ladder,
as will be understood.
.Each face-portion or member 8 is also provided in the proper place with an elongated plurality of receiving depressions l2, or the like into any one of which the said lug, projection or rib 7 can opening or 'slot 11, and intheir inner ./"sujrfaces, the said face-portions oi' members 8 are formed with a ico ` Vside-bar,
- ably disposed upon the said end-portions of relations .in said faceportions or membersl 8, with the screW-threa ed portions 14C of said Shanks projecting beyond said face-portions or members 8 and having suitably mounted thereon Washers 15 and tightening or binding nuts 16.
The manner of assembling the various devices and parts and the adjustahility of the lengthening and adjusting means'ivith relation to the side-bars or members y1 of the ladder will be clearly understood from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings, and any further description of the same is therefore deemed u-nnecessary.
l. In a ladder, in combination with the supporting end-portions of the side-bars of the ladder, each side-bar being provided in its supporting end-portion with a hole, and a recessed portion extending laterally across the outer face-portion of each side-bar, adjusting means for lengthening said sidebars, each adjusting means comprising a plate linserted in a recessed-portion and fixed therein, each plate being provided with an outwardly projecting retaining rib projecting beyond the outer face-portion of the and a channeled member comprising a face-plate and two marginal sidemembers adapted to embrace and to be slidthe side-bars, each tace-plate being formed With lan elongated opening, a bolt in the hole of each side-bar, said bolts extending into and through said yelongated lopenings and provided With tightening nuts, the faceplates oi' the' channeled members bei-ng furchanneled member comprising a ther provided upon their inner faces with a plurality of laterally extending receiving depressions into any one of which a projecting rib aforesaid is adapted to be brought into retaining registration.
2;.In a ladder, in combination with the end-portions of the side-bars of the ladder, eachside-bar being provided in its supporting end-portion with a hole, and a. recessed portion extending laterally across the outer face-portion of each side-bar, adjusting means for lengthening said side-bars, each adjusting means comprising a plate inserted in a recessed portion and fixed therein, each plate being provided with an outwardly projecting retaining r' outer face-portion of the 'side-bar, and a face-plate a'nd tvvo marginal side-members adapted to embrace and to be slidably disposed upon the said lower end portions'of the side-bars, each face-plate being formed With an elongated opening, a bolt inthe hole of each side-bar, said bolts extending into and through said elongated openings and pro vided withtightening nuts, the face-plates b projecting beyond the j of the channeled members being further provided upon their inner faces With a plurality of laterally extendinfr receiving depressions intov any one of vv ich a projecting rib aforesaid is adapted to be brought into retaining registration, and a connecting web connecting. the lovv'er supporting endportions of the face-'plate and marginal side-members of each channeled member, said Webs extending beneath the free ends of the side-bars of the ladder, so as to reinforce and protect said ends of the sidebars.
In,testimony lthat I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand MORITZ soHULZn.
