To all whom. t may concern:
Be 1t known that I, RAYMOND MArroNnY,
va citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is the provision of an inexpensive and easilyapplied device for holding a ladder against movement downwardly or laterally on a slanting roof so that the ladder can be safely used to gain access to another roof or the guttering thereon or the like.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure 1 is an elevation showing my novel device in use.
Figure 2 is an enlarged broken view showing my device in plan and the side bars of a ladder in section.
Figure 3 is a detail section taken in the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an enlarged perspective of one of the ladder holders of my improvement.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawing.
The building portion shown in Figure 1 includes two slanting roofs 1 and 2, and my invention contemplates the use of the novel safety device or ladder holding device in the relation illustrated in Figure 1, the side bars of the ladder being numbered 3.
My novel device is made of appropriate metal, and comprises a body bar 4 and ladder holders 5. The bar 4 is apertured at 6 for the passage of nails or the like to hold it to the roof, and at intermediate points in its length it is provided'with raised portions 7 in which are longitudinal slots 8. The holders 5 are similar in construction, though yreversely arranged, Figure 2, and therefore a detailed description of the one shown in Figures 3 and 4 and at the left of Figure 2 will suffice to impart a definite understanding of both. By particular reference to Figure 4 the holder alluded to will be understood as including a bifurcated body 9 and a shank 10, the body being bifurcated at 11, and the shank being of obtuse angle form alle aperture@ at l2. At side of its bifurcation the bodyl 9= is provided with a longitudinal vupstandingr fiange 13, and at the opposite side of the bifurcation the body bears an upstanding longitudinal flange 14 in which is a transverse threaded aperture 15. Both fianges 13 and 14 are iiush with the side walls of the bifurcation 11, and a headed and threaded bolt 16 is mounted in the threaded aperture 15 and is equipped at its inner end with a pressure plate 17, preferably swiveled on the inner end of the bolt.
Manifestly the body bar 4 may be of any desired length and may be nailed or bolted on a roof or any other support, and fastened either detachably or permanently.
The shanks of the holders 5 are positioned in use under the raised portions 7 of the bar 1 and are adjustably fixed to the bar by headed and threaded bolts 18 extended through the slots 8 and wing nuts 19 on said bolts. The adjustable fixing of the holders 5 to the body bar 4 adapts the device for use in conjunction with ladders of different widths,r the side bars 3 of each ladder being clamped as shown in the holders so that the ladder is securely maintained against slipping downwardly or sidewise on the roof.
In addition to the practical advantages ascribed to my novel device it will be appreciated as susceptible of easy application and adjustment, and as well adapted to withstand exposure and rough usage.
Obviously when deemed expedient the device may be galvanized or painted with a view to prolonging its usefulness.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A safety or holding device for ladders, comprising a body bar with raised intermediate portions and longitudinal slots therein, holders arranged to receive the side bars of e ladder and having positioned lieder -2- .y ik 1,450
the raised portions of the body bar, and means connecting the body bar and holder Shanks and extending through said slots; the holders each including a bifureated body and an angular shank whereby the body will be maintained above and in spaced relation to a *roof or other support.
2. A safety or holding device for ladders, Comprising a body bar with raised intermediate portions and longitudinal slots therein, holders arranged. to receive the side bars of a ladder and having shanls positioned under the raised portions oi the body bar.y and means connecting the body bar and holder Shanks and extending through said slots; the holders each including a bitureated body and an angular shank whereby the body will be maintained above and in spaced relation to a root or other support, and the body being bi'turcated and provided with upstanding flanges in one of which is carried ladder clamping means.
