Abstract

A tread support assembly for mounting a stair tread on a beam having a sloping upper face. The tread support includes an angle shaped support member and a main member of substantially channel shape. One flange of the main member and one flange of the support member are attached to the sloping face of the beam with the web of the main member resting on a free end of an outwardly extending flange of the support member adjacent the other flange of the main member. A slide member embraces and holds the other flange of the main member and the outwardly extending flange of the support member in flatwise relation. The tread is attached to the web of the main member.

AT IOQNEYS' TREAD SUPPORTING ASSEMBLY This invention relates to a stair construction. More particularly, this invention relates to tread supports for a stair construction.
An object of this invention is to provide a tread support assembly which can be mounted on a sloping beam to support a horizontal tread.
A further object of this invention is to provide such a tread support assembly which is adaptable to fit beams which slope at varying angles to the horizontal.
Briefly, this invention provides a tread support assembly which includes an angle shaped support member and a generally channel shaped main member. One flange of the angle shaped support member can be attached to a sloping beam with a second flange extending outwardly of the beam. One flange of the main member is attached to the beam spaced from the support member, and the web of the main member adjacent the second flange thereof rests on the free end of the outwardly extending flange of the support member. Means is provided for holding the members in assembled relation with the web of the mainmember horizontal. The outwardly extending flange of the support member can be varied in length to adapt the tread support assembly for the degree of slope of the beam.
The above and other features and objects of this invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention pertains from the following detailed description and the drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a stair which includes tread supports constructed in accordance with an embodiment of this invention;
FIG. 2 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale showing a fragmentary portion of one of the beams of the stair shown in FIG. 1 and one of the tread supports attached thereto;
FIG. 3 is an exploded perspective view of the tread support shown in FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary view partly in side elevation and partly in section showing the connection between members of the tread support; and I FIG. 5 is a view in section taken on the line 5-5 in FIG. 4.
In the following detailed description and the drawing, like references indicate like parts.
In FIG. 1 is shown a fragmentary portion of a stair which includes a pair of spaced parallel sloping beams 12 and 13 which are supported in any appropriate manner, not shown. A
' plurality of tread boards 14 are supported on the beams by tread support assemblies 16.
Details of construction of one of the tread support assemblies 16 are shown in FIGS. 2-5 inclusive. The assembly 16 includes a generally channel shaped main member 17, an angle shaped support member 18, and a slide connector 19.
One flange 21 of the support member 18 is provided with a bore 22 for receiving a screw fastener 23 (FIG. 2) which attaches the flange 21 flatwise against a sloping face 24 of the beam 13 and with a support flange 26 of the support member 18 extending outwardly of the sloping face 24 normally thereto.

assembled relation as shown in FIG. 4. The return bend flanges 37 and 38 engage the side of the support member flange 26 opposite the set screw. The slide connector also prevents twisting of one member with respect to the other member. An opening 41 (FIGS. 2 and 3) and a slot 42 in the main member web 33 receive appropriate screw fasteners, not shown, for attaching one of the tread boards 14 to the web 33 flatwise therewith.
The length of the support flange 26 is chosen with reference to the slope of the beam face 24 to make the web 33 horizontal. For beams which slope at smaller angles to the horizontal, shorter support flange lengths are used and for beams which slope at greater angles to the horizontal, longer support flanges are used. The support flange can be formed of a length suitable for the greatest angle which will be encountered, and an end portion thereof can be cut therefrom to adjust the length to one suitable for a selected beam angle. As shown in FIG. 4, the free end of the support flange is cut away as indicated at 46 at an angle equal to the angle between the web 33 and the flange 27 of the main member 17, when in installed position. The members and slide can be formed of metal such as steel or the like and the material of the main member can give sufiiciently to accommodate varying lengths of support flanges.
As shown in FIG. 1, a pair of tread assemblies 16 support each tread board 14 with one of the tread assemblies of the pair being mounted on each of the beams 12 and 13. A
The tread support structure illustrated in the drawing and described above is subject to structural modification without departing fromthe spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by letters patent is:
1. A support for mounting a tread on a beam having a sloping upper face which comprises an angle shaped support member, means for attaching one flange of the support member to the sloping face of the beam in flatwise relation therewith and with the other flange of the support member extending upwardly and outwardly of the sloping face, a main member of substantially channel shape, means for attaching one flange of the main member to the sloping face of the beam Openings 29 and 31 are provided in the flanges 27 and 28,
respectively. A screw fastener 32 (FIG. 2) extends through the opening 31 of the flange 28 to attach the flange 28 to the sloping beam face 24 in flatwise relation thereto with a web portion 33 of the main member 17 resting on a free end 34 (FIG. 3) of the support member flange 26 adjacent the flange 27 of the main member 17. The slide connector 19 is of generally channel shape with inwardly extending return bend flanges 37 and 38 at ends of flanges thereof. The slide connector 19 embraces the main member flange 27 and the outer end portion of the support member flange 26. A set screw 38 threaded in an opening 39 of a web 40 of the slide connector 19 extends through the opening 29 in the main member flange 27 and engages the support member flange'26 to hold the members in spaced from the support member and with a web of the main member resting on a free end of the outwardly extending flange of the support member adjacent the other flange of the main member and with the web horizontal, means for embracing and holding the other flange of the main member and the outwardly extending flange of the support member in flatwise relation and means for attaching the tread to the web.
2. A support as in claim 1 wherein the means embracing and holding flanges includes a slide, a set screw mounted in the slide and extending through an opening in the other flange of the main member and engaging the outstanding flange and means of the slide engageable with the outwardly extending flange on a side opposite the set screw.
3. A support as in claim 1 wherein the flanges of the main member extend inwardly normally to each other.
4. In combination, a pair of spaced beams having parallel sloping upper faces, a tread support assembly mounted on each of said beams, each of said tread supports including an angle shaped support member, means for attaching one flange of the support member to the sloping face of the beam associated therewith in flatwise relation therewith and with the other flange of the support member extending upwardly and outwardly of the sloping face, a main member of substantially channel shape, means for attaching one flange of the main 7 member to the sloping face of the beam associated therewith spaced from the support member and with a web of the main member resting on a free end of the outwardly extending flange of the support member adjacent the other flange of the main member and with the web horizontal, means for embracing and holding the other flange of the main member and the outwardly extending flange of the support member in flatwise relation, and means for attaching a tread to the web of the main member of the tread assembly in horizontal position thereon.

Claims (4)

1. A support for mounting a tread on a beam having a sloping upper face which comprises an angle shaped support member, means for attaching one flange of the support member to the sloping face of the beam in flatwise relation therewith and with the other flange of the support member extending upwardly and outwardly of the sloping face, a main member of substantially channel shape, means for attaching one flange of the main member to the sloping face of the beam spaced from the support member and with a web of the main member resting on a free end of the outwardly extending flange of the support member adjacent the other flange of the main member and with the web horizontal, means for embracing and holding the other flange of the main member and the outwardly extending flange of the support member in flatwise relation and means for attaching the tread to the web.
2. A support as in claim 1 wherein the means embracing and holding flanges includes a slide, a set screw mounted in the slide and extending through an opening in the other flange of the main member and engaging the outstanding flange and means of the slide engageable with the outwardly extending flange on a side opposite the set screw.
3. A support as in claim 1 wherein the flanges of the main member extend inwardly normally to each other.
4. In combination, a pair of spaced beams having parallel sloping upper faces, a tread support assembly mounted on each of said beams, each of said tread supports including an angle shaped support member, means for attaching one flange of the support member to the sloping face of the beam associated therewith in flatwise relation therewith and with the other flange of the support member extending upwardly and outwardly of the sloping face, a main member of substantially channel shape, means for attaching one flange of the main member to the sloping face of the beam associated therewith spaced from the support member and with a web of the main member resting on a free end of the outwardly extending flange of the support member adjacent the other flange of the main member and with the web horizontal, means for embracing and holding the other flange of the main member and the outwardly extending flange of the support member in flatwise relation, and means for attaching a tread to the web of the main member of the tread assembly in horizontal position thereon.
