Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Feb, 20, 191-7..
Application-filed February 19, 1915. Serial No. 9,219.
dentof Auhurndale, county, of Middlesex,
\ "andfiCommonwealth of Massachusetts? have iiiivent'ed certain new. and useful In rove merits in- Receptacles, of'which' the ollowis a full, clear, and exact specification.
his invention relates-to that class of receptacles orboxes wherein the front has a vertical slot therein, and an easily opened narrowfto whereby the contents can be convenient y removed by the application of the contents.
' toodry. e p 1 Referring to the drawings forming part the forefingerof holders hand through the vertical slot, and an upward pressure of,-
finger against a portion of the tip of the What I ani endeavoring to accomplish A isthe efi'eoting of means for preserving the contents from climatic conditions, particu= larly when the same are cigarettes and especially liable to lose their'flavor and become of this specification, Figure '1 'is' a perspective' view of the box composing a portion of'fmy improved receptacle. Fig. 2 is a hdrizontal section of the same containing jthe remaining elements of-my invention. -3 i j' forvv the box. Fig. 4' is'a perspective vlew Fig 3 is a perspective. view of the lining of the linin%having a section thereof made separable. i'g. 5 s afperspective. view of the separable section.
' a bottom 13, a top member 14 and a frontal The box 'alone comprises a back frbnt 2 having avertical slot therein','bottom 4, ends; 5 and-hinged to- 6. Thus made,
the flavor and moisture o the contents'will' escape to a greater or less extent,,depending upon climatic conditions, through the slot,3.-, The lining, i s made-of thin and preferably moisture-proof paper, as waxed paper,1foilpaper and the like, and comprises a back 10,'front 11 having a vertical slot 12 therein,
lining 15. These parts may be integral, as illustrated in "Fig; 3, or the frontal lining and top may be separate, as shown in Figs.
.4 and 5, and the back 10 may be provided with end flaps 17 as shown in Fig. 3. In case the, receptacle is designed for cigarettes,'the latter are placed between the front and'back 11, 10 parallel with the bottom l3.'-- The front is then turned down flat-noon the cigarettes, and the frontal lining 15 is folded down upon the front.
The same is then slid down into the box,-
with the slot 12parallel with the slot 3 but separated therefrom by the frontal lining 15, as shown in Fig. 2.
As is evident, the space between the paper front 11 and'the box front 2 forms in effect renders the slots incapable of permitting the escape of moisture.
The ends or flaps 1'7 serve. to retain the cigarettes in place more perfectly as the parts are being slid into the box.
The advantage in having the frontal lining 15 separate from the parts 10 and 11 is that said lining may be made of heavier paper, or even card, while the remainder are of thin paper. Further, the frontal lining 15', andthe connected top 14.- can be more easily drawn out to give access to the contents through the slots, than can the integral lining. Further, the card lining 15 can bereturned to its original place, if desired 'to preserve the cigarettes for a further period.
It should be noted that the slot 12 in the paper front 11 does not reach to the bottom tween the adjacent edges of the frontal lining an'dth'ebottom 4 of the box, as would be the case were said slot to extend to the same point as does theslot When the lowermost cigarette is reached, the pressure of the finger easily tears the thin paper front thereat and, reaches the object behind.
If desired, the box may be made somewhat fancy and comparatively expensive, and the cigarettes .may be shipped in the paper lining suitablyj sealed by internal revenue stamps, and slid into the box as needed.
What I, claim'is:
1'. Thecombination with a box having a I vertically slotted front and a movable top,
of a lining comprising a slotted front, a bottom, a back, a top member and a frontal lining, the front, bottom and back being .of the latter. .The purpose of this is to insure against the escape of moisture beintegral, and the top member and frontal In testimony that I claim the foregoing lining beingintegral. invention, I have hereuntoset my hand this 10 3. The1 combination with a box 1Chaving. 16th day of February, 1915. a vertioa ly s otte front and a mova 1e top 5 of a lining comprising a slotted front, 2i (MRS') ARGARET ROSS bottom, a back and a frontal lining, the Witnesses: slot in the lining front being spaced from A. B. UPHAM, the bottom. 7 ROBERT W. FROST.
