Description
WILLIAM B. McCLURI-I.
Improvement in Scirrup for Cart and Dray Shafts.
' No. I2I, 6 44.
Patented Dec. 5, 1871 33 fl adlvl (fifty.
UNITED v STATES WILLIAM B. MOGLURE, OF ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN STIRRUPS FOR CART AND DRAV SHAFTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,644, dated December 5, 1871.
To all zrhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. MCCLURE, of Alexandria, in the county of Alexandria and State of Virginia, have invented a new and Improi'ed Stirrup for Cart and Dray Shafts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention has for its object the production of an improved traveling stirrup for supporting the shafts of carts and drays; and consists in constructing said stirrup with rollers, balls, or other friction devices for the purpose of easing its motion upon the shaft, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved stirrup provided with rollers the cart-shaft being in section. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 a sectional elevation of my improved stirrup provided with a frictional ball.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and. manner of operation.
A representsa stirrup adapted to support the shaft of a cart or dray, it being hung in any proper manner from the saddle upon the animals back. This stirrup may be generally of any proper form and size, and be constructed of any suitable material. It is provided with a frictionroller or rollers, or with a ball or balls, or other equivalent devices for easing its motion upon the shaft of the cart or dray.
By means of this improved construction the stirrup is adapted to move freely upon the shaft of the cart or dray, so that the weight of the load is always supported in a line perpendicular with the groove of the cart-saddle.
In the employment of the stirrup without these devices it has been found that practically it has no motion upon the shaft, and that, consequently, a portion of the load must be drawn by the saddle upon the back of the animal instead of by the collar or straps upon the chest, as it should be. This result, which is exceedingly injurious to the animal, is entirely obviated by my improved construction.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A stirrup provided with friction devices, substantially as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 13th day of November, 1871.
W. B. MGOLURE.
