PATENT FFICE.-
CORNELIUS HOOD, OF SENECA FALLS, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN ROTARY HARROWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,621, dated December 5, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS HOOD, of the town of Seneca Falls, in the county of Seneca and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Botar i Harrows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters thereon marked.
The object of my invention is to make use of a bale and Weights and balance-bar in such manner as to throw the Weight all onto either side of the harrow at pleasure, or so as to shift the lesser Weight to the opposite side from the greater one, and thus relieve the pressure of the latter on the harrow. The advantage ot' my bale and Weights attached is to enable the operator to reverse the lnotion of the harroW Without stopping or cheele ing the team, thus saving time and labor. An other advantage o1'l my extra Weight J is to barrow deep or shallow, as may be desired. The object of my balance-bar with pulley-wheels or spools attached is to avoid the necessity of stopping the team to swing the bar over from one side to the other of the harrow, as is done in those now in use. The second part of my invention is the upright rim or pulley-Wheel track, the object and advantage of which is to give greater rmness and strength to the harrow, and also to obviate the accumulation of dirt, sods, or clods on the track. The third part of my invention relates to the two stays L L, the cup-Washer N, and washers G. The object ofthe stays L L is to support, by means of the pin W, the balance-bar P P, and also to restrict and direct its operation. The object ofthe cup-washer N is to receive the draftbeam B for the purpose of better keeping it in position and for keeping' it from tipping from. side to side. The object of the Washer (one or more) G is to raise the draft-beam and allow ot' using' longer teeth.
Figure I is a top View of draft-beam B with bale, Weights, balance-bar with wheel-pulleys attached, stays, and cup-washer, (upper edge of.) E is bale; I, Weight; J, extra weight maintained in place by arm D, which swings J from side to side ot' barrow, and is bent and passes through B at X. The bale is fast or hooked into rings or staples in B. P P is balance-bar With pulley- Wheels or spools A A. This bar is stayed in position by pin W between stays L L, and balances on said pin. N is top edge of the cup-washer, Which passes under and encases the under circular part ot' B.
Fig. II shows top oi' rim and pulleywheel track O with shoulders at R, which is made by cutting a square notch into the rim C and letting the arm H into the notch and bending out lt to form the shoulder.
Fig. III is side view ot' harrow complete with my improvements attached, the parts lettered corresponding With same parts and letters in Figs. I, II, and IV. Fig. IV is Washer G, through the center of which, and the center ot' circular part ot' B, and through the center of S, passes the center bolt.
Having thus described my invention, l claim and desire to secure by Letters PatentF The arran gement and combination ot'the wheeltrack G, draft-beam D, bale E, weight I, extra Weight J, arm l), land balance-bar l) provided with a track, A, all operating together, as and for the purpose described.
CORNELIUS HOOD.
