To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES N. l VHIT'E, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bisbee, in the county of Cochise and State of Arizona, have invented new and useful Lnprovements in Plow-Colters, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to plow colters, and it has for its object to produce a colter of simple and improved construction which may be readily applied to a turning plow of any conventional type and which will present an obliquely disposed cutting edge having a proper slant to enable it to cut readily through sod that is interlaced with and obstructed by roots and the like.

A further object of the invention is to produce a colter having two separate cutting parts or members whereby when one cutting member becomes dull, a simple reversal of the colter will present a new cut ting edge, thereby avoiding loss of time by interrupting the work for the purpose of sharpening the colter.

A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and improved colter having the previously mentioned characteristics and which will also serve as a brace to connect the plow point with the beam, an-

other result of this brace-like structure being that the colter itself will be held with exceptional security while at work, danger of breakage being also avoided.

Further objects of the invention are to simplify and improve the construction and operation of the improved device.

Vith these and other ends in view vwhich will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.

The improved colter may be described as consisting of a bar of steel B which is shaped to produce two separate and distinct cutters 15, 15, the edges of which extend substantially from the middle portion of the cutter to the ends thereof. The cutting edges 16 may be formed by swaging the bar so as to offset said cutting edges in opposite directions from the ter having a back 17 with respect to which the edge of the other cutter is offset outwardly from the body of the bar. The bar B is provided at the ends thereof with arms or brackets 18 that extend in opposite directions with respect to the bar 13, each of said brackets being disposed at an acute angle with respect to the back of the proximate cutting member. The brackets are disposed in parallel relation with respect to each other, and each bracket is provided with an aperture 19 for the passage of a screw or fastening member 20.

In applying the improved device to a plow, one of the arms 18 is connected by a fastening member 20 with the landside portion of the plow point P, the parts being so proportioned that the lower edge of the arm 18 will coincide with the lower edge of the landside portion. The other bracket 18 is connected by means of a clip or clamp member C with the plow beam 1). hen thus mounted one of the cutting members will be presented in a sloping or inclined position adjacent to the plow, the cutting ec ge being precisely in the plane of the landside, and in a position which will enable the colter to cut effectively through heavy sod, roots and the like. When one cutting edge is dulled, the colter may be readily reversed.

It will be seen from the foregoing descrip tion that I have produced an improved double colter of very simple construction which is capable of being quickly attachedto an ordinary turning plow and which owingto its manner of attachment is strongly remforced against injury while at the same time it strongly reinforces the construction of the plow.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

1. A colter consisting of a bar having two opposite cutting edges extending from the body of the bar, each cut-.

middle portion to the ends thereof, said bar having brackets extending at acute angles to the backs of the respective cutting members.

2. A colter consisting of a bar having tWo opposite cutting edges extending from the middle portion to the ends thereof, said bar having brackets extending at acute angles to the backs of the respective cutting members, and said arms being disposed in parallel relation to each other.

3. A double, reversible colter consisting of a bar having opposite cutting edges extending from the middle portion to the ends thereof, said cutting edges being offset from the body of the bar, and angularly disposed brackets at the ends of said bar, said brackets being disposed at acute angles to the backs of the respective cutting members, and said brackets being apertured for the reception of fastening means.
