To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT W. AYLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at West New York, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wrenches and more particularly to pipe wrenches.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a wrench that may be quickly and easily adjusted and securely held when adjusted.
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved means for securely holding the housing in any adjusted position.
A. further object of my invention is to provide an improved means in the housing for holding the movable jaw in a normal position.
A further object of my invention is to provide a wrench that is simple in construc tion, efficient in operation, and one that can be manufactured and put upon the market at a minimum cost.

Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate like or corresponding parts throi'ighout the different views, the numeral 1, designates a shank having its front face provided with rack teeth 2, and has secured or formed integral with its outer end a stationary jaw 3, provided with a serrated engaging face 4. Slidably mounted upon the shank 1, is a housing 5.
The housing 5, comprises side walls 6 and 7 the latter of which has extending from its rear edge a rear wall 8, which extends across the rear face of the shank 1, and engages the rear edge of the side wall 6. The side wall 6, is provided upon its inner face with Specification of Letters Patent.

a block 9, and a lug 10, which block and lug are provided with sockets 11, in which are positioned rivets or the like fastening members 12, which rivets also pass through openings 13, in the side wall 7, and thus firmly connect the side walls. The inner face of the block 10, and the outer face of the lug 9, are out slanting and arranged in spaced parallel relation. P
The block 9, is provided with a tapering chamber 14, which chamber has arranged therein a tapering movable jaw 15. The in nor end of the jaw 15, is provided with an opening 16, to receive a pin 17, for the purpose of pivotally mounting the movable jaw in the chamber. The inner end of the jaw is reduced to provide arcuate shoulders 18, which engage the arcuate edges 19, of the recess 20, between the abutments 21 and 22. It is obvious that this arrangement removes all the strain from the pivot pin 17. The movable jaw 15, is provided in its rear face with a curved socket 23, in which is disposed the coil spring 24, the outer end of which bears against the side of the chamber 14 and holds the serrated face 25 of the jaw 15, in a position parallel to the serrated face 4, of the stationary jaw 3.
For the purpose of holding the housing 5, in any adjusted position upon the shank 1, I have slidably arranged between the block 9 and the lug 10, a pawl 26, which has its rear face provided with teeth 27, adapted for engagement with the teeth of the rack 2. Thefront face of the pawl 26, has its outer end provided with forwardly extending inwardly disposed hook-like projection 28. In order to operate the pawl 26, 1 have pivot ally secured between the side walls 6 and 7, by means of a pin 29, in the openings 30, an operating lever 31, the lower end of which is rounded as at 32 and engaged in the hooklike projection 28 of the pawl 26. For the purpose of holding the pawl 26 in engagement with the rack 2, I have secured one end of a leaf spring 33 by means of suitable rivets 34, to the front edge of the block 9, the free end of the spring bearing against the front edge of the hook-like projection 28 of the jaw 23, as shown at 35.
The operation of my device is as follows:
The operating lever 31, being moved toward the shank 1, disengages the pawl 26,
from the rack 2, the housing 5, is now slid upon the shank 1, untll the movable jaw 15, engages a pipe (not shown). It is obvious that by turning the wrench, the movable jaw 15, will move upon its pivot and the shoulders 18, thereof, will slide upon the arcuate edges 19, of the recess 20, and thus be firmly supported and the front and rear edges of the jaw will abut against sides of the chamber 14:, and the abutments 21 and 22. The spring 24:, holds the teeth of the movable jaw 15, in parallel relation with the teeth of the stationary jaw 3, when not in operation.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains that modifications may be made in detail without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention and appended claims.
Having thus fully described one specific form of my invention I do not wish to be limited thereto except for such limitations as the claims may import.
I claim:
1. A wrench including a stationary jaw, a shank extending therefrom provided with a plurality of teeth, a housing slidably mounted upon said shank, a block in said housing, a movable jaw associated with the bl0ck,'a lug arranged within the housing in spaced relation to the block, the opposed faces of the block and the lug slanting with respect to the shank, a pawl slidably mounted in said housingand arranged between and in close relation with the block and lug, a hook formed integral with said pawl at the outer edge thereof, a leaf spring secured to the outer edge of the block and bearing against the outer surface of the curved position of the hook for holding the pawl in engagement with the shank, a lever pivoted in the housing adjacent the lug having one endin engagement with said hook, and the oppositeend of said lever being curved to facilitate removal of the pawl from .the shank.
2. A wrench including a stationary jaw, a shank extending therefrom and provided with a plurality of teeth upon one edge, a housing adjustably mounted upon said shank and having arcuate recesses in the forward ends of its sides, a block disposed within said housing adjacent the forward end thereof and provided with a V-shaped recess, an inner jaw pivoted in said recess, said inner jaw having an enlarged end provided with arcuate shoulders to cooperate with the arcuate recesses of said housing in guiding and limiting movement of said inner jaw, a guide lug arranged in the rear end of said housing, a pawl slidable in said housing between said block and said lug, said pawl engaging the toothed edge of said shank to lock the inner jaw andhousing in adjusted position with respect to said stationary jaw, means for resiliently retaining said pawl in operative position, and means for 'moving said pawl to inoperative position.
